Davies leads Canadian Firms in Q2 Worldwide Rankings
Davies Ward Phillips & Vineberg was the highest-ranked Canadian-based firm in worldwide announced deals according to Thomson Financial’s Second Quarter 2006 Mergers & Acquisitions Review, released July 5. Davies’ 25 deals accounted for over US$100 billion in volume. (Click here to visit the Thomson website for complete details.)

This leading position resulted from Davies’ strong showing in the US, Latin America, Europe and of course, Canadian markets.

Thomson also reported that M&A volume in the first half of 2006 continued to surge with announced worldwide M&A volume reaching US$930.4 billion. This placed the second quarter of 2006 as the third most active quarter lagging only the first quarter 2000 and the fourth quarter 1999.

DLA Piper Named "Market Trailblazer" by Leading Research Group
DLA Piper Rudnick Gray Cary US LLP has been recognized as a ""Market Trailblazer"" in the newly published report BTI Market Movers: Law Firms Shaping the Legal Market. The firm was praised for its client feedback programs, bold market strategies, market positioning and new billing practices.

BTI Consulting Group, Inc. surveyed more than 240 corporate counsel and Fortune 1000 companies to identify the law firms who stand out for innovative strategies and tactics in delivering legal service.

According to the report, corporate counsel and key decision makers believe a firm's broad strategic influence is fueled by the unique ability to leverage client-focused strategies with bold approaches to the market. Twenty-seven percent of those surveyed saw innovation in client-focused delivery models. Clients were also impressed with strategies that position a law firm for global leadership.

""Our inclusion in the BTI report highlights our continued dedication to client service as well as our ability to offer a single resource for all of our clients' global needs,"" said Francis B. Burch, Jr., partner and Joint Chief Executive Officer of DLA Piper. ""I am especially proud to be recognized by General Counsel around the country as a leader and an innovator within the legal market.""

""It is an honor to be recognized by our peers and clients as a leader in the legal market,"" added Lee I. Miller, partner and Joint Chief Executive Officer of DLA Piper. ""This recognition is a testament to the time and effort we have invested in building a unique, leading law firm that is well-positioned to meet the needs of clients wherever they choose to do business.""

""Market Movers"" are further defined as those firms who deliver non-traditional services such as compliance training, attending client-sponsored training, crafting new strategies to better manage litigation and developing training programs. They also utilize technology, flexibility in billing, and help their clients feel that the value delivered exceeds the fee.

Among the findings in BTI's report, a General Counsel of a large manufacturer commented when asked about impressions of DLA Piper: ""They are organized to respond to client needs, wherever those needs may be.""

This latest honor comes on the heels of several honors for the firm this year, including being named ""Law Firm of the Year"" by The Lawyer; ranking among ""Global 50"" by Practical Law Company's Which Lawyer? Yearbook; ranking #1 by IP Today for the 2nd consecutive year for trademarks filed in the U.S. Patent Trademark Office in 2005; and ranking #1 in Practical Law Company's Global Counsel Corporate Real Estate Handbook.

D. Anderson Cancer Center’s “A Conversation With a Living Legend,” 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Dec. 8 at the Hilton Anatole, 2201 Stemmons Freeway.

A native of Brooklyn, Giuliani was elected the 107th mayor of New York City in 1993 and re-elected in 1997. Author of New York Times best seller Leadership, Giuliani began his career as a federal law clerk to U.S. District Court Judge Lloyd F. MacMahon in the Southern District of New York. Giuliani served in a number of positions within the Department of Justice, including its third highest, U.S. Associate Attorney General. Houston partner David Ivey was invited to be a speaker for an August 8 Strafford Publications teleconference titled, ""Foreign Corrupt Practices Act—Strategies for Avoiding Charges, Penalties, and Litigation.""

Noting that criminal penalties for violations of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) have risen dramatically against both companies and corporate officials and that the Securities & Exchange Commission and Department of Justice are increasing scrutiny of U.S. companies' dealings with overseas officials—and strengthening FCPA anti-corruption enforcement efforts—Ivey and the other panelists provided an overview of FCPA obligations and strategies for avoiding charges, penalties, and litigation.
