Firm Awards Minority Scholarships at Fifth Annual Diversity Dinner
Jenner & Block recently awarded six racial and ethnic minority scholarships and fellowships to law students during the Firm’s Fifth Annual Diversity Dinner. Attended by over a hundred guests, the event also featured keynote speaker Samer Hamadeh, Co-Founder and CEO of Vault, Inc., who offered career advice for minority associates in large law firms.

Partner Molly J. Moran, Co-Chair of the Firm’s Summer Program, welcomed the many summer associates and award recipients to the Annual Diversity Dinner. Partners William M. Hohengarten and John F. Cox, also Co-Chairs of the Summer Program, were on hand to talk with students one-on-one about their experiences in the legal profession.

Partner Donald B. Verrilli, Jr., Chair of the Firm’s Diversity Committee, provided an overview of Jenner & Block’s efforts to increase diversity in the Firm and in the profession. Not only is diversity a core value at the Firm, he said, but many of the Firm’s pro bono cases directly address issues of diversity in society. Among other things, he cited the Firm’s arguing in Lawrence v. Texas, the landmark gay rights case in which the U.S. Supreme Court struck down a Texas sodomy law as unconstitutional, and its influential amicus brief on behalf of 65 major corporations in the University of Michigan affirmative action case, in which the Court upheld the university’s consideration of race as one of many factors to be weighed in admissions decisions.

In addition, Mr. Verrilli noted that attorneys reflecting a multiplicity of cultures, genders, ethnic backgrounds and viewpoints are integral to providing “world class client service,” which directly translates into new business and recruiting opportunities for the Firm.

Mr. Verrilli said the Firm created the Jenner & Block Minority Scholarships to further contribute to diversity in the legal community by providing financial assistance for first-year law students of color who have demonstrated academic excellence and community service experience. The recipients of this year’s scholarships are: Suneeta Fernandes, Darren Goodson, Alexis S. Wade, and Dana Woolen.

Ms. Fernandes attends the University of Illinois College of Law, where she is on the Dean’s List and a Harno Scholar. She holds a M.A. in Medical Sciences from Boston University and a B.A. from the University of Chicago in Economics and Biological Sciences. During college, Ms. Fernandes tutored elementary and middle school children as part of the Washington Park Youth Tutoring Program and the Theresa House Transitional Shelter.

Mr. Goodson attends DePaul University College of Law, where he is the treasurer of the Black Law Students Association and recipient of the CALI award in Legal Writing. He attained his B.S. from the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign cum laude and was a member of Phi Alpha Phi and the National Association of Collegiate Scholars. In addition, Mr. Goodson was a volunteer for the Boys and Girls Club.

Ms. Wade attends the University of Virginia School of Law, where she is a member of the Community Service Committee of the Black Law Student Association, Student Bar Association Yearbook Committee and the American Constitution Society. She also served as a volunteer for the Central Virginia Legal Aid Society and a local voter registration drive. Ms. Wade graduated with distinction from Duke University with a B.A. in Sociology.

Ms. Woolen attends Loyola University Chicago School of Law, where she is involved with the Health Law Society and the Black Law Students Association and recently co-chaired the symposium on Race and Law. Ms. Woolen attained a B.A. from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor in Organizational Studies with an emphasis in Human Resource Consulting. During college, she was co-president of the Organizational Studies Student Assembly, a member of the NAACP and Phi Alpha Delta Pre-Law Fraternity.

Partners Reginald J. Hill and Katherine A. Fallow, Co-Chairs of the Firm's Hiring Executive Committee, also introduced two additional awards sponsored by Jenner & Block and the American Bar Association (ABA).

The Jenner & Block ABA Summer Diversity Fellowship, a program to help introduce undergraduate students to the rewards and demands of a research-oriented career in the field of law and social science, was presented to Harvard University junior Zeh-Sheena Ekono. Ms. Ekono will pursue an interdisciplinary fellowship in psychology and law.

The Jenner & Block is a long standing sponsor of the ABA Legal Opportunity Scholarship Fund, which is a financial award to encourage racial and ethnic minority students to attend law school and to provide financial assistance to students in need. Harvard Law School student and recent Summer Associate at Jenner & Block's Washington, DC office, Taj N. Wilson has been a recipient of this award. Mr. Wilson is member of the Harvard Civil Rights-Civil Liberties Law Review and the Harvard BlackLetter Law Journal. He was a 2005 summer associate at the Firm’s DC office and also worked for the San Francisco Public Defender.

In the evening’s keynote address, Mr. Hamadeh, Co-Founder and CEO of Vault, Inc., outlined some best practices for minority attorneys to excel in the large law firm environment. Among other tips, Mr. Hamadeh encouraged the members of the audience to increase their visibility by taking credit for work and getting involved in projects and organizations, to build a network within the firm and with outside contacts in order to exchange information and gain feedback on progress, and to do pro bono work that reflects other legal interests and provides hands-on experience that would otherwise be unavailable.

Partner Charlotte L. Wager, Director of Professional Development and Co-Chair of the Executive Hiring Committee for Jenner & Block recapped the evening’s major topics, including the Firm’s efforts to attract and retain attorneys from a variety of backgrounds. She added that Mr. Hamadeh’s tips on “selling oneself” within the Firm “speaks directly to this initiative” by increasing each attorneys “breadth of practical experience” while increasing one’s exposure within the Firm.
