Gerald L. Pauling, of Seyfarth Shaw LLP, one of America’s leading full service law firms, has been recognized by the Law Bulletin Publishing Company (publisher of Chicago Daily Law Bulletin and Chicago Lawyer) as one of “40 Illinois Attorneys Under Forty to Watch” for 2006.

He has represented employers in a wide variety of state and federal court matters, including litigation of employment contract claims, harassment claims, and discrimination claims brought under Title VII, the ADEA, the ADA, and various other state and federal statutes. Pauling has extensive experience representing management in labor relations matters, including collective bargaining, labor arbitration, representation campaigns, and litigation before the National Labor Relations Board. He also provides advice, training and counseling to clients regarding employment policies and practices and diversity issues.

The Law Bulletin profile praises Pauling for inspiring “trust and respect” among clients, peers, and also among his courtroom opponents. Such praise, the profile notes, “Is the sign of an honest, ethical and hard-working lawyer…No matter how complicated a case may get, or how heated, Pauling always remains in control. His adversaries know him not only for his tenacity, but also for his diplomacy.”

Pauling received his B.A. from the University of Illinois and J.D. from University of California, Los Angeles School of Law. Pauling’s prior legal experience included a clerkship at the City of Chicago Law Department and an externship with the Honorable Terry J. Hatter, Jr., federal judge of the United States District Court for the Central District of California in Los Angeles.

This is the Law Bulletin’s seventh annual ranking. Selection criteria for this roster of 40 young attorneys (out of a field of more than 1,200 nominations) is based on an examination of the nominees career achievements including successful settlements, verdicts, acquisitions or transactions, how far the nominees have risen in their practice area and the contributions the attorneys have made to their communities.

Seyfarth Shaw Earns High Marks in 2006 Chambers USA Rankings
Seyfarth Shaw LLP, one of America’s leading full service law firms, was recognized in the 2006 Chambers USA Guide as among the best law firms in multiple practice areas and offices, and many of its attorneys were also ranked as best in class for their practice area. In particular, the Real Estate, Employee Benefits, Employment, Construction and Environmental practices were singled out for their outstanding capabilities. The highly regarded USA rankings are compiled through extensive research and interviews with attorneys and clients.

“We are very proud of this recognition by Chambers on being excellent lawyers and delivering superior client service,” said J. Stephen Poor, Seyfarth Shaw’s Managing Partner. “The client comments tell the story, and our team has done an extraordinary job.”

- In Illinois, Seyfarth was recognized for the achievements of its Employment, Employee Benefits, Environmental and Real estate practice groups. Seyfarth topped the list of Employment law firms in Illinois. According to Chambers: “’The Big Kahuna’ in the Illinois labor and employment market, Seyfarth Shaw has a breadth and depth of talent that ensures clients have access to experts in all areas of employment and employee benefits advice…One of the first to develop expertise in this area of law, it continues to attract high-profile clients, many of whom require labor negotiation services and representation in litigation as well as counseling.” Chambers notes that with “the upsurge in class action suits allover the USA, no other firm is better placed to deal with such challenges.” They acknowledged the talented Employment and Employee Benefits practices, saying “Seyfarth lawyers are in evidence at the forefront of new developments in employment law and active in the area of employee benefits and ERISA, moving clients to praise the way they work in unison with them and give ‘keen insights that help prioritize the issues ahead.’” The Guide also stated that in Illinois, Seyfarth “houses a good all-purpose Environmental practice with some star performers in its front ranks” and has a “dominant OSHA practice.” With regard to the Real Estate practice, Chambers noted that the department has “significant critical mass” with over 30 attorneys who “add luster to the firm’s blossoming investment practice.”

Chip Ingraham Quoted in Atlanta Business Chronicle
The July 28th issue of the Atlanta Business Chronicle reports on the latest development in the ongoing legal battle at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. Nearly a year since the airport chief fired the team he hired to design a new international terminal at the airport, he has now asked the Atlanta City Council for approval to hire a new team to design a new terminal for a cost of $8.5 million. It’s emphasized that the first team had won a competitive bid for the project, whereas the new team are “on-call contractors,” who have been pre-approved by the city to do miscellaneous work.

While some question the need for another international terminal, the chief justifies the cost and believes that continued investment is crucial to maintain the airport’s title as the “busiest passenger airport in the world.”

The original design team claims that the airport had no cause to dismiss it, and that the airport chief and staff had been informed of escalating costs that resulted from necessary design elements. That team sued the city in September for damages and harm to their reputation, and a court date isn’t expected until next summer.

Chip Ingraham, “who represents the (original) design team, says the airport chief didn’t go through an official bidding process to select the new design team, but instead asked council to approve two ‘on-call’ contractors to pick up the pieces of the international terminal design. He isn’t sure that’s legal. He believes the city’s provision for pre-approved contractors was never meant for contracts as large as $8.5 million. He also wonders what criteria the chief used to chose the contractors or how thoroughly he checked their credentials to execute a project this size. And, says Ingraham, the price for the work undoubtedly will rise above $8.5 million before the design is completed. The work done by the first team has amounted to about $40 million, Ingraham said. The city still owes the team $6 million, he contends.”
