Clark Thomas Earns A+ For Diversity Efforts
Clark, Thomas & Winters, A Professional Corporation, is pleased to announce that it has been awarded a grade of A+ for its efforts in recruiting and retaining minority attorneys. The grade was part of the 7th annual Minority Hiring Report Card issued by the Hispanic Bar Association of Austin (HBAA) and the Austin Black Lawyers Association (ABLA) grading the hiring and retention of minority attorneys by the 25 largest law firms in Austin. Clark Thomas was one of only 5 firms that earned an A+ grade for exceptional minority hiring and recruitment efforts.

“From a business perspective, it makes sense to have a law firm environment comprised of individuals with various backgrounds, experiences, cultures, and viewpoints,” remarked Clark Thomas President Larry McNeill. “The jump in our grade to an A+ in 2006 from a B+ in 2005 is a clear demonstration of the firm’s ongoing commitment to recruiting, retaining, and promoting a diverse community within the firm that reflects the corporate legal departments we serve.”

“In today’s competitive legal market, where clients are demanding diversity from their law firms, attorney diversity and the hiring of minority attorneys are not just business development and retention issues. They are also among the factors impacting the growth and expansion of law firms,” reports Paul Ruiz, Shareholder and Chair of the Recruitment and Diversity Committees at Clark Thomas. “Attorneys looking to relocate their practice, such as the Land Use and Government Affairs group who moved their practice from Minter, Joseph & Thornhill, P.C. to Clark Thomas in July of this year, are seeking out firms, for both cultural and client service reasons, that have a demonstrated commitment to diversity.

Orrick Ranked a Leader for Global Project Finance Deals
In the first half of 2006, North America had the largest volume of project finance since 2000, according to the Dealogic Global Project Finance Review.

In its first-half review, Dealogic ranked Orrick third among legal advisors on global private finance initiatives and public private partnerships (PFI/PPP) project finance deals. Orrick served as counsel on the Indiana Toll Road acquisition, the largest project finance transaction in North America to date in 2006. Also known as the Chicago Skyway, the project ranked third overall in terms of size of all global project finance deals in the first six months of the year.

The Indiana Toll Road privatization, a $4.8 billion acquisition, represents the first sale of a major public transportation asset in the United States. Orrick represented the mandated lead arrangers for the financing of the privatization and operation of the toll road, and was awarded International Financial Law Review's ""Deal of the Year"" project finance award for this project.

Dan Mathews, chair of Orrick's global finance group, predicted in March 2006 the project would have a great impact on infrastructure development. ""The Chicago Skyway financing will be the benchmark against which all other U.S. PPP financings are compared going forward,"" Mathews said. Mathews will be co-lead sponsor at the September event, North American PPP 2006: The Infrastructure Finance Conference.

According to Dealogic, global project finance recorded the highest half-year volume since 2000, indicating a 36 percent increase from the same period last year and a 41 percent increase from the first half of 2004. PFI/PPP volume is up 116 percent from 2005, and the infrastructure sector accounted for more than 90 percent of the market.

By both deal count and volume, infrastructure has taken the lead in global finance, totaling $11.7 billion in the first half of 2006. Global PFI/PPP is mainly driven by deals in the United Kingdom, but the volume has been increasing in the United States.
