PATRICK SAUTER NAMED MDLA PRESIDENT

Former Allfirst Deputy General Counsel Joins Ober|Kaler's National Commercial Finance Practice
Ober|Kaler announced today that William J. Thomas has joined the 128-attorney firm as a principal adding depth to the firm's expanding national commercial finance and financial institutions practice.

Mr. Thomas brings more than thirty years of experience in the financial services industry.

Previously with Miles & Stockbridge, Mr. Thomas, 51, served as Senior Vice President and Deputy General Counsel for Allfirst Bank (formerly First National Bank of Maryland), where he was employed from 1991 to 2003.

Representing financial institutions and other lenders, Mr. Thomas focuses his practice on commercial transactions, bank regulatory matters, and Uniform Commercial Code issues. While he has experience working on financings for a variety of industries, he has a particular emphasis in the health care, government contracting, international and trade sectors. Mr. Thomas also has extensive experience in representing financial institutions in the delivery of treasury management services in the context of forms development and workouts.

Mr. Thomas is the latest in a number of new additions to Ober|Kaler's growing commercial finance practice. Stuart Schabes, a prominent national tax transaction lawyer joined the firm in June, and Steve Cordi, former Maryland Deputy Comptroller, joined the firm in July adding increased capability to the practice.

Mr. Thomas received his J.D. from the University of Maryland School of Law (1987), and his B.A. from The Ohio State University (1982). He is a member of the American Bar Association and Maryland State Bar Association.

STOEL RIVES MAKES CASE FOR ENDING HUNGER
Stoel Rives LLP and the legal community joined forces in the Food from the Bar campaign to donate valuable time, collect food and raise money to feed San Francisco's most vulnerable children.

In addition, Stoel Rives was awarded Gold Partner status for earning more than 6,000 points ¯ a combination of dollars, pounds of food and volunteer hours. This marks the third consecutive year that Stoel Rives’ contribution exceeded their previous years’ totals for money raised, food collected and volunteer hours worked. Stoel Rives earned a total of 6,250 points, for an average of 142 points per person.

Approximately 80 firms and organizations participated in the annual food drive. Of these, 8 achieved Platinum Partner status, 7 achieved Gold Partner status, and 28 achieved Silver Partner status. The campaign, in its 14th year, brought in a record-setting amount with approximately 80 participating organizations (a record number of firms) raising $255,623; 25,333 pounds of food; and contributing 1,923 volunteer hours.

Overall, the Food from the Bar campaign had its most successful year. Proceeds go to provide food for the San Francisco Food Bank's distribution programs, including its Healthy Children and Community Food Partner pantries. For 14 years, San Francisco law firms have fought childhood hunger through Food from the Bar, which is sponsored by the Bar Association of San Francisco (BASF).

ORANGE COUNTY UNITED WAY HONORS SNELL & WILMER WITH TWO DISTINGUISHED AWARDS
The Orange County United Way recently presented two awards to the Orange County office of Snell & Wilmer at the 2006 United Way Campaign Celebration. The annual award ceremony recognizes philanthropy efforts from corporations and organizations in Southland communities.

The first award, for “Outstanding Overall Campaign” in the 100-299 employees category, was presented to Snell & Wilmer’s Orange County office. The campaign was led by Timothy Kay, Snell & Wilmer Partner and Orange County United Way Alexis de Tocqueville Society Co-Chair, and his associate, Elizabeth Weldon. The firm received the award according to highest per capita gift, number of leadership donors, greatest increase in dollars raised and dollars designated.

Kay also received the second award, United Way’s first-ever “Innovator of the Year” distinction for developing the de Tocqueville Society’s affinity group, “Bench & Bar,” one of the United Way’s first fundraising guilds for the legal profession, which now claims with nearly 50 member attorneys and retired judges. Kay has served on the United Way Board of Directors for nine years and on the Executive Committee of the Board.

These awards honor one of several outreach efforts by the Snell & Wilmer Charity Foundation, the firm’s non-profit entity formed in 2002. Through a long-term partnership, the Foundation regularly supports United Way’s Orange County early childhood learning initiative, “Success by 6,” and other organization initiatives. Additional outreach efforts by the firm’s Orange County office include the holiday adopt-a-family program and contributing supplies to troops overseas.

Blackwell Sanders’ Bio Energy and Renewable Fuels group was profiled in the August 14 issue of the Kansas City Business Journal. The article discusses the rise of legal work with the building of ethanol and biodiesel plants as the country strives to increase alternative energy. Blackwell Sanders has pulled together a team of 40 attorneys who contribute to the alternative fuels knowledge base - covering topics including transportation, construction, water rights and opinions, environmental assessments, and wind power generation. “The Power Team” brings a broad array of energy experiences to the emerging field of renewable fuels and bio energy.

Daniel P. Joyce To Present At Canadian Consulate Program

Meek Joins DLA Piper's Real Estate Practice in Chicago
DLA Piper Rudnick Gray Cary US LLP has announced that Adam Meek has joined the firm’s Real Estate practice group as a partner in the Chicago office. He joins DLA Piper from Katten Muchin Rosenman.

Meek has practiced environmental law for 15 years with a concentration on managing the risks and liabilities associated with the acquisition or disposition of properties with adverse environmental conditions in connection with various real estate, corporate and financing transactions. He has experience in all areas of environmental law, including site remediation and liability management, environmental litigation and enforcement defense, transactional guidance, regulatory compliance counseling, and environmental insurance.

Meek has worked on numerous multi-facility, $100+ million transactions involving the acquisition and sale of properties and companies with serious environmental and safety issues. In these transactions, his experience ranges from ensuring comprehensive due diligence to drafting efficient and effective contractual provisions to protect the client’s interests. He also has extensive experience with the full range of insurance options available to manage environmental risks and facilitate transactions involving properties or companies with serious environmental problems.

”Adam will play a distinctive role in our real estate practice because of his thorough understanding of important environmental issues,” said Jay Epstien, partner and chair of the firm’s Real Estate practice group. “His experience and environmental background enhances what we can deliver to clients in the form of comprehensive, qualitative real estate counsel.”

He has represented clients at numerous CERCLA (Superfund) sites throughout the country, including serving as common counsel to the Steering Committee for the PCB Treatment, Inc. Site in Kansas City, which had over 2000 responsible parties, including several of the largest utilities in the country and the United States Department of Defense. He has also developed substantial experience in managing the risks and liabilities associated with sites contaminated with munitions and explosives of concern (MEC) and munitions constituents, including former munitions manufacturing facilities.

Meek received a B.A. from the University of Michigan, and a J.D. from Northwestern University School of Law. He is a member of the Chicago Bar Association and the Interstate Technology and Regulatory Council.
