Jonathan N. Rosen Admitted to The Edward Bennett Williams American Inn of Court
Mintz, Levin, Cohn, Ferris, Glovsky and Popeo, P.C. announced that Jonathan N. Rosen, a member of the firm's Washington D.C. office, was admitted into The Edward Bennett Williams American Inn of Court.

The American Inn of Court is an amalgam of distinguished judges, lawyers, law professors and law students that is designed to improve the skills, professionalism and ethics of the bench and bar. An invitation-only professional organization, the Edward Bennett Williams American Inn of Court has the distinction of being one of only a few Inns of Court specializing in white collar criminal prosecution and defense. Its membership includes D.C. Circuit Court Judges, District Court Judges, Superior Court Judges, DOJ Officials and some of the most established defense attorneys in town.

Mr. Rosen, a former federal prosecutor specializing in complex white collar crime, joined the firm earlier this year as a member of the litigation section. Throughout his career with the United States Attorney's Office, Mr. Rosen successfully prosecuted numerous white collar cases, including those involving financial institutions, securities fraud, money laundering, conspiracy, embezzlement and wire fraud, among others. His extensive background includes prosecuting a regional officer of a federal agency for the embezzlement of government funds, spearheading a money laundering case involving two million dollars in grant money stolen from the federal Department of Education and representing the government in two arguments before the District of Columbia Court of Appeals.

Mr. Rosen has been recognized on four occasions for special achievement by the United States Department of Justice. Most recently, Mr. Rosen was a senior Assistant United States Attorney in the USAO's Fraud and Public Corruption Section, where he received the Director's Award for Superior Performance from the United States Attorney General. He previously served in the Community Prosecution and Major Crimes, Grand Jury and Appellate Sections. Earlier in his career, he served as a Deputy District Attorney in the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office in California where he prosecuted at trial more than 100 felony crimes.

A Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Stanford University, he earned a law degree with honors from Boston University.

Murphy Comments on Changes to Retirees Medical Benefits
Christopher J. Murphy, a Partner in the Firm's Labor, Employment and Employee Benefits Practice Group in the Philadelphia office, was quoted in this article about changes being made to retired workers' medical benefits.

""There is unquestionably a trend that, where possible, employers are looking to get retirees to share more of the cost of retiree health benefits,"" Mr. Murphy said in response to aerospace company Boeing's decision to raise medical insurance premiums for its union-represented retirees to reduce increasing health care costs.

Mr. Murphy said Boeing is one of many companies changing the medical benefits of retired workers due to the growing population and rising costs.

Mr. Murphy also mentioned that an employer can make changes to medical benefits if documents governing the benefits state the company reserves the right to terminate, amend or modify the plan.

Cason Carter attends the United States Senate Leadership Summit for Young Professional
On September 19-20, 2006, Cason P. Carter participated in the United States Senate Leadership Summit for Young Professionals in Washington, D.C. Mr. Carter was nominated to attend the summit by United States Congressman John Sullivan (1st District of OK) and United States Senator Tom Coburn (OK). The two-day conference provided a forum for young professionals from across the nation to discuss a range of legislative issues with senior members of the United States Senate and nationally recognized policy experts.

“Bringing together young leaders and our federal officials for an open discussion and exchange of ideas is vital to our nation’s continuing efforts to address issues affecting our families, communities, and nation,” said Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison (TX), chair of the Summit.

Senate Majority Leader William H. First, M.D. (TX) welcomed the delegates. Senator Hutchison updated participants on Congress’ accomplishments this session and briefed them on the legislative agenda. Senator Lamar Alexander (TX) spoke on protecting America’s competitive edge, Senator John Sununu (NH) outlined options for financial security, Senator John Thune (SD) shared ideas on increasing small business growth, and Senator Lisa Murkowski (AK) discussed access to affordable, innovative health care. Participants engaged in informative Q&A sessions following each panel.

High-level speakers included U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao, who gave the afternoon keynote address; Dr. Mark McClellan, Administrator, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services; and Carly Fiorina, former Chairman and CEO of the Hewlett-Packard Company.

“The sessions allowed us to have a meaningful dialogue about keeping America competitive, creating more jobs, building financial security, and making health care accessible and affordable to everyone,” said Sen. Hutchison.
