Howard D. Cohen To Share Lessons on Successful Planning and Zoning
Parker McCay shareholder, Howard D. Cohen, will speak at the Annual New Jersey Planning Conference on November 3, 2006 at the Hyatt Regency in New Brunswick, N.J.

The seminar, designed for professional planners, is titled, “Successful Planning and Defense of Zoning.” Mr. Cohen will join other professionals to provide planning and zoning strategies designed to protect and preserve environmentally sensitive and agriculturally suitable lands and natural resources with compatible residential development opportunities. The seminar will focus on lessons learned from court decisions involving Bedminster, East Amwell, Readington and Hopewell Townships.

Mr. Cohen specializes in corporate, commercial and complex land use litigation, and is a certified civil trial attorney by the New Jersey Supreme Court. A number of his cases in complex land use have set precedent in the state of New Jersey, including the successful defense of the Township of Bedminster’s R-10 Rural Residential Zoning District in F.M. Kirby v. Twp. Comm. of Bedminster, and successful defense of the Township of East Amwell’s Amwell Valley Agricultural Zoning District in New Jersey Farm Bureau, Inc. v. Twp. of East Amwell.

Five New Associates Join Maynard Cooper’s Litigation Practice
Maynard, Cooper & Gale, P.C. is pleased to announce five new associates have joined its Litigation practice: Bryan A. Coleman, Thomas G. DeLawrence, Tiffany Threlkeld Leonard, J. Ethan McDaniel and Donald F. Winningham III. With the addition of the fall class of associates, the firm now has a total of 160 attorneys.

Bryan A. Coleman is practicing in the firm’s Litigation practice group. He graduated from the University of Alabama School of Law, summa cum laude, in 2005. During law school, Coleman was both the Junior and Internet Editor of the Alabama Law Review, as well as a member of the Campbell Moot Court Board and the Jessup International Moot Court Team. He was also elected to the Order of the Coif
and received the Leigh Harrison Award and the Hugo L. Black Scholar Award. Before attending law school, Coleman received his B.S. in Management from the United States Military Academy in 1995. Coleman has held several military positions, including executive officer, flight platoon leader, and instructor pilot. He was on the Commandant’s List for Academic, Athletic, and Military Excellence and has received various military honors such as Meritorious Service and Army Commendation medals. Prior to joining Maynard Cooper, Coleman served as a law clerk to the Honorable Karon O. Bowdre of the U.S. District Court.

Thomas G. DeLawrence is practicing in the firm’s Environmental Litigation and Regulatory Compliance practice group. DeLawrence graduated cum laude from the University of Alabama School of Law in 2006. During law school, he was the Senior Editor of the Journal of the Legal Profession, a member of the Environmental Law Society, Secretary of the Defense Lawyers’ Association, and a Senator in the Student Bar Association. DeLawrence graduated cum laude from Birmingham-Southern College in 2001. While he was at Birmingham-Southern, DeLawrence was a member of Theta Chi
Fraternity and the school’s tennis team.

Tiffany Threlkeld Leonard practices in the firm’s Insurance Litigation and General Litigation practice groups. Prior to joining the firm, Leonard received a full tuition scholarship to the University of Alabama School of Law, where she graduated in 2006. While attending law school, she served as Editor of the Law & Psychology Review and was a 2006 National Semi-Finalist for the Robert Wagner Labor and Employment Moot Court Competition. Leonard served in various leadership roles during law school that
included being Secretary of the Bench & Bar Legal Honor Society, a Representative on the Student Diversity and Academic Support Faculty Committee and the Secretary for the Black Law Students Association. Leonard received the Diversity Outstanding Service Award and the Community Service Award from the Black Law Students Association. She also received her undergraduate degree from the University of Alabama and was a National Achievement Scholar, Presidential Scholar, and in the University Honors Program. In addition, Leonard was a member of the XXXI Women’s Leadership
Honorary Society, Capstone Men and Women, Secretary of the New College Student Council and a Senator for the Student Government Association.

J. Ethan McDaniel practices in the firm’s Insurance, Complex Litigation, and General Litigation groups. McDaniel attended the University of Alabama School of Law, where he graduated summa cum laude in 2006 and was elected to the Order of the Coif. While in law school, he received the Dean M. Leigh Harrison Award, the Judge Leon McCord Memorial Scholarship, and the Excellence in the Study of Federal Jurisdiction Award. McDaniel was an Articles Editor and member of the Managing Board of the Alabama Law Review. He was also a member of the Bench & Bar Legal Honor Society, the Alpha
Epsilon Lambda Graduate Student Honor Society, the Federalist Society, and the hristian Legal Society. McDaniel received his B.A. in Economics from Vanderbilt University in 2002. At Vanderbilt, he received the James Robins Memorial Scholarship, was a member of the Omicron Delta Epsilon Honor Society, and was named to the Dean’s List and the Southeastern Conference Academic Honor Roll. He was also a letterman on Vanderbilt’s Varsity Football Team and was a member of the Kappa Alpha Order and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

Donald F. Winningham III is currently working as a new lit igation associate at the firm. In May of this year, Winningham received his Juris Doctorate from Washington and Lee School of Law, where he was a staff writer for the Washington and Lee Law Review. Winningham was also a student clerk for the Honorable G. Steven Agee, Justice of the Supreme Court of Virginia and a co-director of Law School Intramural Activities while at Washington and Lee. He has also served as a legislative intern for Representative Phillip Pinion, Chairman of the Transportation Committee Tennessee General Assembly. In 2003, Winningham graduated summa cum laude from the University of Tennessee-Martin with a B.S. in Political Science and History. While at the University of Tennessee-Martin, Winningham received the Tennessee Historical Commission Award for Graduating History Major and the Outstanding Political Science Student Award. He was a member of both the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society, the Political Science Honor Society, and Kappa Alpha Order.

Mayer, Brown, Rowe & Maw sponsors art exhibition in Frankfurt
International law firm Mayer, Brown, Rowe & Maw LLP is one of the main sponsors of the current "I like America" exhibition at the Schirn art gallery in Frankfurt. The exhibition, which began on September 28, is open until January 7, 2007.

The exhibition shows the enthusiasm of German artists for America's Wild West in the 19th Century, as illustrated in the graphic arts between 1825 and 1950. On show are over 150 paintings, movies, drawings and photographs as well as more informative documentary accounts that go to the heart of the reasons for Germany's enthusiasm for the American Wild West.

Maribel Mata Benedict Joins Katten Muchin Rosenman as Partner in Public Finance Practice
Katten Muchin Rosenman LLP today announced that Maribel Mata Benedict has joined the Firm as a partner in its Public Finance Practice. Ms. Benedict will be based in the Firm’s Chicago office.

Ms. Benedict joins Katten after spending 12 years as a sole practitioner in the Law Office of Maribel Mata Benedict in Chicago, where she counseled a largely Hispanic client base on matters in the areas of municipal finance, civil litigation, real estate and estate law.
Ms. Benedict’s practice focuses on serving as co-bond and co-underwriter’s counsel in financing transactions. Since 2001, she has handled financing transactions in connection with approximately $2.4 billion in bond, tender note and tax anticipation warrant transactions. Her clients have included the City of Chicago and the Chicago Parks Department on the issuers’ side, as well as underwriters Merrill Lynch, J.P. Morgan and Bank of America.

Ms. Benedict is a member of the National Association of Bond Lawyers, the Illinois State Bar Association, the Chicago Bar Association, and Women in Municipal Finance. She is also listed in the Bond Buyer’s Municipal Marketplace Directory.

William Satterwhite of Jackson Walker L.L.P. To Receive Lifetime Achievement Award
William T. Satterwhite, Of Counsel in the Regulatory and Legislative section of Jackson Walker L.L.P., has been named recipient of the 2006 Dallas Business Journal's Lifetime Achievement Award.

Satterwhite's experience also includes many years of experience within the energy industry. Prior to joining the firm he served as Chief Legal Officer for ENSERCH Corporation, with responsibilities for federal and state governmental affairs. He is a member of the Texas Bar Association, the Texas Bar Foundation, the Dallas Bar Association and the American Bar Association.

He served as member of the Texas House of Representatives from 1963 to 1966. He was Chairman of the Texas Board of Land Surveying from 1979 to 1985, and a member of the Texas Commission on Economy and Efficiency in State Government. He served as a Director of the Southwestern Legal foundation from 1978 to 1997.

The Lifetime Achievement Award will be given to Satterwhite during the 2006 Best Corporate Counsel Awards. The Lifetime Achievement Award is given to an individual who has made outstanding contributions to the legal industry throughout their career. The award recognizes those individuals whose sense of fairness within the legal system continues to improve the industry as well as inspire others.

These awards, hosted by the Dallas Business Journal, honor the outstanding attorneys and legal teams of North Texas. Nominations include achievements during July 1, 2005 to June 30, 2006. Awards will be handed out in ten categories including Outstanding Solo General Counsel, Good Samaritan, Best Deal, etc. Twenty finalists will be honored on Thursday, November 2 at the Westin Galleria Dallas, 13340 Dallas Parkway.

Eminent Domain Attorney Marjorie Stern Jacobs Joins Duane Morris in Philadelphia
Duane Morris is pleased to welcome Marjorie Stern Jacobs, formerly of Fox Rothschild LLP, as a partner in the Philadelphia office. Marjorie joins the firm as a partner in the Real Estate Practice Group, where she will work with Drew Kapur and George Kroculick, both partners in that practice group. She represents clients on matters of eminent domain (condemnation), real estate taxation and zoning.

At her former firm, Marjorie was co-chair of the Condemnation Group and Tax Appeals Practice Group. At Duane Morris, Marjorie focuses her practice on representing condemning authorities and property owners with respect to pre-condemnation planning and consultation and post-condemnation litigation. Marjorie's practice also emphasizes Pennsylvania real estate taxation pertaining to the valuation and exemption of a wide range of properties. She further concentrates on Philadelphia zoning and related land use matters.

Prior to beginning her private practice, Marjorie was a Divisional Deputy City Solicitor in the Law Department of the City of Philadelphia. In that role, she served as counsel to the Board of Revision of Taxes of the City of Philadelphia and the Zoning Board of Adjustment of the City of Philadelphia. She also served as a chair of the 700-member Real Property Section of the Philadelphia Bar Association and currently chairs the Real Property Section's Eminent Domain and Appraisals Committee.

Marjorie has written and lectured extensively on the topics of eminent domain, real estate taxation and zoning. Since 1980, she has co-authored and edited the Cumulative Supplements to Snitzer on Pennsylvania Eminent Domain, the widely read treatise on Pennsylvania condemnation law.

A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, Marjorie earned her law degree from Temple University School of Law.
