Stoel Rives Attorney Receives "Light a Fire" Award for Nonprofit Work
Stoel Rives associate Saskia de Boer received a Light a Fire Award this month from Portland Monthly magazine and the Oregon Community Foundation. De Boer was honored with an individual award in the category of Extraordinary Board Member Under 35 for her work as a board member of Planned Parenthood of the Columbia/Willamette (PPCW) and her efforts to get more young professionals involved with nonprofit organizations.

The Light a Fire Awards were established in 2005 as a way of supporting the local nonprofit community by recognizing the people and groups—nonprofit organizations, philanthropists, volunteers, corporate donors, board members and others—whose extraordinary acts of service have raised the quality of lives in Portland and beyond. This year’s awards were presented at a banquet on October 10, and recipients will be profiled in the November issue of Portland Monthly.

In addition to serving on the PPCW board, de Boer chairs its Development Committee and is a member of its Finance Committee. To encourage other busy young professionals to devote time and energy to nonprofit work, she launched a series of educational, fund-raising and networking events through PPCW called “Sexy Tuesdays.” The events range from social gatherings at neighborhood hot spots to larger fund-raising events such as art auctions and concerts. The goal is “to build a new generation of supporters and advocates” for nonprofit organizations and strengthen connections between nonprofits.

“We’re very proud of Saskia,” says Walter Van Valkenburg, Managing Partner of the Stoel Rives Portland office. “She is an inspiring example for us all, and she reflects the strong community-service spirit that Stoel Rives strives to foster firmwide.”

De Boer credits her earlier experience as Public Affairs Manager of PPCW for both motivating her to become a lawyer and leading her to Stoel Rives. “I was interested in public health and education,” she says, “and working with PPCW helped me realize how law and public policy shape the entire landscape of health care, from how we think about it to how it affects us individually and as a society.”

She adds that Stoel Rives’ commitment to pro bono work and community involvement drew her to the firm. “Stoel Rives attorneys are very active in the community,” she notes. “I connected with some of them before I went to law school, and I knew from the start that this was the firm for me.”

De Boer’s practice focuses on tax-exempt organizations, charitable giving, tax planning, estate planning and administration. She is also on the Stoel Rives Hiring Committee and provides pro bono legal services through the Multnomah County Legal Aid Services clinic co-managed by Stoel Rives. She received her law degree from Stanford Law School and her undergraduate degree from Vassar College.
