Law firms merge: Thelen Reid and Brown Raysman join
One of California’s largest law firms—Thelen Reid & Priest LLP—is merging with Brown Raysman Millstein Felder & Steiner LLP.

The resulting firm will have more than 615 attorneys. It will be known as Thelen Reid Brown Raysman & Steiner LLP. The merger takes effect Dec.1.

Thelen Reid specializes in construction, energy, and project finance, while Brown Raysman is known for technology law and a firm with one of the country's largest real estate finance practices that closed $25 billion in loans in the past several years for Wall Street financial institutions, money center banks, and hedge funds.

The combined firm will rank in the top 50 on the Am Law 100 and have a national footprint, with offices in major markets of the United States. The firm will have a total of eight offices—seven in the United States and a recently opened office in Shanghai.

It will have 242 attorneys in California and 371 lawyers on the East Coast, including 255 in New York.

Stephen O'Neal and Julian Millstein will serve as co-chairmen, and Thomas Hill will become managing partner of operations.

Pinsents' US Ally Bags New York Merger
San Francisco-based Thelen Reid & Priest and New York's Brown Raysman Millstein Felder & Steiner have confirmed they are to merge, creating a 250-partner, 617-lawyer national firm with an estimated $400m annual turnover.

The firm will be known as Thelen Reid Brown Raysman & Steiner, and will be co-chaired by Thelen chairman Stephen O’Neal and Brown’s managing partner Julian Millstein.

The firm will conduct a comprehensive compensation review in the New Year to determine equity status for the new partners. The combined turnover would have ranked the merged firm 66th in The Lawyer’s Global 100 2006 report, just ahead of Bryan Cave.

Pinsents' Ally Forges 600-Lawyer Practice as US Merger Drive Continues
Pinsent Masons' US ally Thelen Reid & Priest has boosted its New York presence by merging with intellectual property (IP) specialist Brown Raysman Millstein Felder & Steiner.

The combined firm will have around 615 lawyers and operate under the banner Thelen Reid Brown Raysman & Steiner from 1 December.

The move will see Thelen Reid’s New York presence more than treble. The new outfit will have 255 lawyers in New York, including 177 from Brown Raysman. . . .

. . .Thelen Reid chairman Stephen O’Nealcommented: “I cannot imagine a better fit. Brown Raysman has an excellent reputation as a technology and communications firm, what is less known is that the firm also has one of the premier real estate finance practices in the country.”

Brown Raysman partner Julian Millstein said: “This combination gives us the presence we have wanted on the West Coast and in Asia.

Partners Bless Thelen-Brown Merger
Partners at Thelen Reid & Priest and New York's Brown Raysman Millstein Felder & Steiner voted to combine the two firms Monday, creating a 617-lawyer firm that, based on last year's revenue, would have placed 56th on the Am Law 100 list.

The firm will be called Thelen Reid Brown Raysman & Steiner, and will be co-chaired, for 2 1/2 years, by Stephen O'Neal, Thelen's chairman, and Julian Millstein, Brown's co-managing partner.

Thelen, strong in "old economy" practices such as energy and construction, is a good match for Brown Raysman's expertise in technology, intellectual property and media, O'Neal said. "By joining the two, it's the best of both worlds." . . .

Richard Gary, who chaired Thelen from 1992 to 2003 and is now a law firm management consultant, said that, on the whole, it's a merger of equals.

One of the key elements, he said, is the shared chairmanship. . . .

. . ."We're certainly larger than they are," O'Neal said. But in terms of practices of equal stature, O'Neal said it's "absolutely" a marriage of equals.

Millstein said his firm wouldn't have considered the merger unless it was treated equally, adding that the firm had broken off talks with others over the issue.

The deal with Thelen was attractive because of its offices in California.

"The West Coast is very important to us," Millstein said. "It creates a footprint that is critical to us." Brown Raysman has 20 lawyers in Silicon Valley and Los Angeles and none in San Francisco. The combined firm will have 242 lawyers in those three locations.

Thelen will add its 78 New York-based lawyers to Brown Raysman's 177.

The combined firm will have 70 lawyers in Washington, DC, 34 in Hartford, Conn., 12 in New Jersey and four in Shanghai.
