Edwards Angell Palmer & Dodge LLP Celebrates One-Year Anniversary of Merger
The national law firm of Edwards Angell Palmer & Dodge LLP (EAP&D) today celebrates the one-year anniversary of the merger between Edwards & Angell LLP and Palmer & Dodge LLP, which put the firm squarely in the AmLaw 100 (#74) and Global 100 (#97) rankings in terms of size and revenue.

“The success of the merger and integration of our firms is due to the extraordinary efforts and dedication of all of our members and the complementary nature of the two firms,” said Charles DeWitt, co-managing partner. “Thanks to our team we have retained our most valued professionals, added terrific talent and avoided significant client conflicts.”

Edwards Angell Palmer & Dodge marked the anniversary across its nine offices on November 1 with breakfasts, trivia contests and a dedicated jeans day for charity, raising $6,400 for the American Red Cross.

During 2006, the combined depth and bench-strength of EAP&D resulted in significant client wins and precedent-setting legal victories. EAP&D made international bankruptcy law history this year by obtaining the first Order granting a Petition under the new Chapter 15 of the United States Bankruptcy Code in the aid of a non-U.S. proceeding involving a foreign business debtor.

2006 has been a year of successes for Edwards Angell Palmer & Dodge, not least of which is its successful integration. During this period, the firm’s 538 attorneys merged accounting, email and client management systems, and through a concerted and dedicated effort, forged a unified culture.

According to Terrence Finn, co-managing partner, “today we are a stronger and more competitive firm than we were one year ago and are very well poised for continued growth, which is being driven by opportunities coming out of expanded client needs and demands, our evolving marketplace and enhanced capabilities.

Chadbourne & Parke's Co-Founder of Student Hurricane Center Honored for Work With Katrina Victims
Chadbourne & Parke attorney Laila Hlass received an award on October 19, 2006 from Equal Justice Works on behalf of the Student Hurricane Network (SHN). Ms. Hlass co-founded SHN, which works with law students and administrators to create and coordinate volunteer legal opportunities in Gulf Coast communities damaged by Hurricane Katrina.

Based in Washington, D.C., Equal Justice Works was founded in 1986 by law students seeking equal justice for underserved communities. Equal Justice Works presented SHN with the LexisNexis® Martindale-Hubbell® Exemplary Public Service Award at its 2006 Awards Dinner in Washington.

"In September 2005, other students and I started the Student Hurricane Network to connect law students with service opportunities to help the people of the Gulf Coast," explains Ms. Hlass, a native of storm-damaged Long Beach, Mississippi, and a 2006 graduate of Columbia Law School. "We have sent over 1,000 students to the region to volunteer during their winter and spring breaks. We have more trips planned."

Ms. Hlass spent 20 days in New Orleans supervising students involved in projects focused on issues such as voting rights, housing, criminal justice, juvenile justice, and immigrant rights.

She is continuing her commitment to public interest work at the Legal Services Center of The Door, New York City's premier youth development agency. Since 1998, Chadbourne has placed associates at the Center as externs, and in 2005 Chadbourne expanded the commitment by starting the Chadbourne & Parke Door Fellowship. Last month, Ms. Hlass began serving as the newest Fellow, working entirely on pro bono matters. The Center provides a broad range of legal counsel and advocacy services in such areas as family law, the rights of youth in foster care, immigration, and access to public benefits.

The Chadbourne & Parke LLP Foundation has donated $110,200 to Katrina relief efforts

In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, Chadbourne supported relief efforts on several fronts. For example, attorneys in New York took part in the City Bar Justice Center's Hurricane Katrina Legal Relief Project, and the Chadbourne & Parke LLP Foundation donated $110,200 to five charitable groups. The donations were:

$20,000 to Habitat for Humanity’s "Make a Difference Today" project, at which homes for Gulf Coast families were constructed at Rockefeller Plaza during the week of September 26-30, 2005. Chadbourne had 54 volunteers working on the project. The Firm also made available conference rooms, telephones and computer hookups for Habitat for Humanity.
$60,200 to New York Disaster Interfaith Services to help purchase clothes and school supplies for 3,000 evacuees living in New York.
$10,000 to America’s Second Harvest to help support disaster relief and recovery activities and assist its food banks.
$10,000 to Katy Christian Ministries in Katy, Texas (a Houston suburb), where churches were being used as shelters for evacuees. The Firm had previously collected and sent blankets, clothing and personal care supplies to churches in Katy.
$10,000 to the Baton Rouge Area Foundation and the Greater New Orleans Foundation, which arranged grants to community organizations in the areas hit by the hurricane.
