Ricardo Ramírez Featured in Survey as a Top Trade Specialist in Latin America
Thacher Proffitt announced today that LatinLawyer magazine has selected Thacher Proffitt as one of the ten best trade firms in Mexico and among the top twenty-six firms in Latin America, in their “Trading partners"" survey, published in the magazine’s October 2006 issue. It also featured Ricardo Ramírez, counsel in Thacher Proffitt & Wood SC, and head of the Latin American trade practice group, as a leading trade attorney in the region. Boris Otto, managing partner of Thacher Proffitt & Wood SC, Luis Enrique Graham, partner, and Derek Woodhouse, counsel, were also mentioned.

This survey, focusing on the work of leading trade attorneys throughout Latin America, identified figures throughout the region, questioning them about the work they were doing and what they consider to be important issues. They were asked for their thoughts on the development of trade-related legal work in their country, how firms could improve their expertise in the field of trade law, and what trends they saw taking place.

“With the rise of both regional trade agreements and global trade, a need for Latin American trade specialists with the necessary experience and skills will only increase,” said Boris Otto. “Ricardo has represented the Mexican government in significant international trade litigations and negotiations and is an experienced advisor on trade matters. We are thrilled that he was recognized for his accomplishments.”

Ricardo’s clients include private entities and governments, and his work ranges from day-to-day matters such as tariff classification to international trade negotiations. His experience stems from providing counsel on trade agreements, negotiations, and dispute resolution proceedings, focusing on NAFTA issues and free trade across Latin America, including international trade dispute resolution. Before joining Thacher Proffitt, Ricardo was the Deputy General Counsel for Trade Negotiations of the Minister of Economy in Mexico. For over 11 years, Ricardo advised on all trade agreements signed by Mexico, including all 11 Free Trade Agreements signed by Mexico, and represented the Mexican government in complex international trade negotiations with the governments of Chile; Nicaragua; Uruguay; El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras; and Israel. He served as Mexican lead counsel in many proceedings under the WTO Dispute Settlement Mechanism and other trade agreements signed by Mexico involving a wide range of complex issues.

The lawyers listed in the survey were chosen using a two-stage process by the LatinLawer audience. Readers nominated up to five people recognized as pre-eminent in the area of trade, and could choose lawyers with a focus on regulatory, dispute resolution or any other trade work, in any specific industry or sector. The nominees were then vetted by peers and clients via questionnaires and phone interviews to produce the final list.

DLA Piper and attorney Naar win Chicago Outstanding School Partnership Award
The Chicago Public Schools have awarded DLA Piper US LLP and Sonya Naar, a partner in the Litigation practice group of the Chicago office, the Outstanding School Principal/Partnership Award.

Along with Barry Elementary School Principal Alice Vila, Naar and the firm received the award Thursday at the 10th Annual Principal for a Day Luncheon sponsored by Mayor Richard M. Daley and the Chicago Public Schools.

The Outstanding School Partnership Award recognizes the partnership between Barry Elementary and DLA Piper. Created by Naar, this partnership focuses on literacy and career success and has grown to involve a significant number of DLA Piper attorneys and staff.

""We are very pleased that Mayor Daley and the Chicago Public Schools recognize the unique relationship Sonya has created between DLA Piper and Barry Elementary School,"" said Samuel Isaacson, chair of DLA Piper's Chicago Litigation practice group. ""Through this program, Sonya is changing the lives of many children and expanding their understanding of the world. She is a tremendous source of pride for the firm and we congratulate her on receiving this honor.""

The award, in its second year, ""pays tribute to the model partnerships at Chicago Public Schools, honoring the principals and the companies that have created and sustained them."" It also ""emphasizes the Principals for a Day and their purpose of developing long-lasting relationships between schools"" and ""identifies principals who model the skills to build strong partnerships with Chicago businesses.""

Working with Principal Vila, Naar conceived the DLA Piper and Barry School partnership to help develop students' literacy skills. Now in its third year, the pro bono program has grown to include tech support for the school's computers, assistance from DLA Piper in obtaining a Beaumont Foundation grant and participation by the firm's lawyers in the Lawyers in the Classroom program of the Constitutional Rights Foundation.

In addition to the firm's attorneys, DLA Piper staff members provide after-school tutoring and help host Barry School's annual career fair. Law librarians in DLA Piper's Chicago office also lead an annual book drive that gives every Barry student a new book.

Recognizing both the need and opportunity for other organizations to become involved, Naar and DLA Piper invited Accenture, one of the firm's clients, to join its partnership with Barry School. Accenture now works closely with DLA Piper to lead the Lawyers in the Classroom program and also participates in the annual career fair.

Naar is extensively involved in pro bono work. This year, the Illinois State Bar Association named her the Young Lawyer of the Year for 2006 and the Daily Law Bulletin named her to its list of 40 Attorneys Under 40 in Illinois to Watch for 2006. In 2005, Naar won the Abraham Marovitz Making-a-Difference Award, in recognition of her long commitment to teaching the curriculum of the Constitutional Rights Foundation in Chicago classrooms and at Foundation programs. She serves on the CRFC board of directors. In 2005, she chaired the Night to Dream Auction for the Starlight Starbright Children's Foundation and serves on the Foundation's board of directors as well.

Naar concentrates her practice in the area of general commercial litigation, with an emphasis on class actions and complex contract and business disputes.
