Mary Massaron Ross Named National Director for DRI—The Voice of the Defense Bar
At the recent Annual Meeting of DRI-The Voice of the Defense Bar in San Francisco, Mary Massaron Ross, shareholder at the Detroit-based law firm Plunkett & Cooney, was named a National Director of the 22,000-member organization. As a National Director, Ross joins the Board of Directors of the nation’s largest organization of defense trial lawyers.

Ross is the head of her firm’s Appellate Practice Group. Her practice has resulted in numerous victories before the Michigan Supreme Court for clients in both the public and private sector, overturning multi-million dollar judgments and establishing new legal principles. She has also handled appellate matters before the Michigan Court of Appeals, the California Court of Appeals, the Ohio Supreme Court, Indiana Court of Appeals, and federal appellate courts. She has briefed and argued cases on appeal involving complex commercial matters, insurance coverage, civil rights, condemnation, and zoning law.

“Mary has a keen grasp on the issues that confront the defense bar everyday. As head of her firm’s practice group, along with involvement in numerous DRI committees, she brings leadership and organization to our Board of Directors. She will serve the board well with her leadership and management skills,” said John Kouris, executive director of DRI.

Ross has served on DRI’s Appellate Advocacy Committee for seven years, included co-chairing its corporate involvement subcommittee. She has planned several of DRI’s public seminars and written for its publications. “DRI provides its members with the tools to better serve their clients and law firms and understand the issues that are affecting us in the realm of civil defense law. It is a great privilege to serve on the Board of Directors of an organization which is so dedicated to the improvement of the defense bar, nationally and internationally,” said Ross.

Before joining her firm, she served as law clerk to Associate Justice Patricia J. Boyle of the Michigan Supreme Court. Since then she has concentrated her practice in state and federal appellate courts, and has written and argued appeals resulting in over 50 published opinions. Her appellate work also resulted in her appointment by the Chief Judge of the Michigan Court of Appeals to serve on the Michigan Court of Appeals Internal Operating Procedures Task Force. She graduated summa cum laude from Marygrove College and Wayne State University School of Law.
