The Future of Orrick's Logo Featured in San Francisco Legal Publication
Chairman Ralph Baxter is quoted and pictured in The Recorder's front-page article about the future of Orrick’s logo in light of the potential merger with Dewey Ballantine. When the merger was announced, Baxter said “We want to emphasize New York and at the same time, we want to emphasize Orrick – we’ve retained the ‘O’ and the green color.”

Creating a brand name is a challenge for many firms, and the green 'O' is widely identified with Orrick. "It is a visual representation of the balance of the merger," said Director of Communications Allan Whitescarver.

UW Department of Economics Visiting Committee Welcomes New Leadership
Miller Nash lawyer Tom Olson, recent chair-elect of the University of Washington’s Department of Economics’ Visiting Committee, welcomed Ron Irving, interim dean of the College of Arts & Sciences, and Robert Halvorsen, chair of the Economics Department, at a ceremony recently. In attendance were more than 50 members of the greater Puget Sound business community.

The Visiting Committee provides non academic guidance and assistance to the department and promotes stronger relationships with the local business community. With many of the area’s top business leadership as members, the Visiting Committee bridges an essential gap between academia and the world of business.

“As a product of the College of Arts & Sciences at the University of Washington, I believe a liberal arts education teaches us to be life long learners,” said Olson, a partner of Miller Nash LLP specializing in business formation and operations. “Being on the Visiting Committee affords me the opportunity to get involved with one of the country’s finest economics departments and actively play a role in its continued preeminence.”

Olson, who has been a member of the Visiting Committee for the past four years, was elected chair in September 2006 and will serve a two-year term.

As one of the Pacific Northwest’s largest multispecialty law firms focusing on business and litigation, Miller Nash LLP serves clients locally and worldwide from its five offices in Bend, Portland, and Prineville, Oregon, and Seattle and Vancouver, Washington.

Board of Directors Network, KPMG Honor King & Spalding’s Chilton D. Varner with Lettie Pate Whitehead Evans Award
King & Spalding, a leading international law firm, announced today that The Board of Directors Network, Inc. and KPMG LLP have awarded King & Spalding partner Chilton D. Varner the Lettie Pate Whitehead Evans Award, which recognizes the achievements and accomplishments of Georgia women serving on corporate boards of directors. The Board of Directors Network is a non-profit research and advisory organization that works to increase the number of women in executive leadership roles and on corporate boards.

"Ms. Varner’s accomplishments are extraordinary and inspirational to other women in the greater Atlanta community," said Elizabeth Noe, President of the Board of Directors Network. "Her unwavering commitment to her profession, to exemplary board service and her community make her a most deserving recipient of this honor."

Varner is the only woman serving on the board of directors of Brown & Brown, Inc., a publicly traded insurance broker. She serves on the compensation and corporate governance committees for Brown & Brown. Varner also serves on the Emory University Board of Regents, Wesley Woods Geriatric Center Board of Directors and Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Board of Directors.

Varner was King & Spalding’s second woman partner, the firm’s first woman litigation partner and the first woman member of the firm’s management committee. Since she became partner in 1983, the percentage of women lawyers at the firm has increased from less than 5 percent to nearly 40 percent today. She is one of the relatively few female trial lawyers in the country with a successful "first chair" courtroom practice, and her leadership of the field has led to numerous honors, including being named one of the top ten women litigators in the nation and leading the firm’s product liability practice to become one of the top 3 in the nation. Many of the world’s top corporations, including The Coca-Cola Company, GlaxoSmithKline, General Motors and 3M, rely on Varner to represent them in their highest stakes disputes.
