Trudy Williams Receives Pepper Hamilton's William R. Klaus Community Service Award
Pepper Hamilton LLP has awarded the firm’s 2006 William R. Klaus Community Service Award to Trudy Williams, a legal secretary in Pepper’s Washington, D.C. office, in recognition of her dedication to and support of an inner-city school in Washington.

“Trudy single-handedly sustains office support for the Stanton elementary school,” said David A. Wormser, the partner in charge of Pepper’s Washington office. Mr. Wormser presented the Community Service Award to Ms. Williams at a luncheon reception on November 7, 2006. “She provides help with fundraising drives, awards, tutoring, winter coat drives and much more. She is a consistent inspiration to all of us.”

Ms. Williams has helmed many community service efforts, including drives for the Washington Lawyers for Civil Rights Under Law, the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation’s Race for the Cure®, an office “Adopt a Family” holiday gift program and the holiday Feed the Hungry program, among others.

“This is a wonderful honor,” Ms. Williams said. “Mr. Klaus was an incredible man, and I’m grateful that I’ve been able to measure up in some small way. It makes me excited about doing what I do and helping those around me.”

Ms. Williams, who originally joined Pepper in 1980, returned to the firm in 1993 and moved from the New York office to Washington in 2000. She is currently working with Stanton’s students on an art contest for which two winners will be chosen for display on the firm’s holiday cards. She is also busy with this year’s “Adopt-A-Family” holiday program.

The Community Service Award is named for William R. Klaus, a chairman emeritus of Pepper who died in 2005. Mr. Klaus was one of the founders and early presidents of Philadelphia’s Community Legal Services and a former chancellor of the Philadelphia Bar Association.

Pepper Hamilton Receives Citizens Bank Pro Bono Award
Pepper Hamilton LLP has been awarded the 2006 Citizens Bank Pro Bono Award. The award, which includes a $10,000 grant from Citizens Bank to be used to support qualifying law-related public service agencies, was presented at the Andrew Hamilton Gala – the principal fundraiser for the Philadelphia Bar Foundation – on Saturday, November 4, 2006.

“Pepper has long been committed to pro bono work – it’s the nature of our firm,” said Robert E. Heideck, executive partner at Pepper. “Our dedicated attorneys and staff offer tireless support to those in need of legal services in our community. So we’re pleased to ask that Citizens Bank donate the $10,000 award to several public interest law centers in Philadelphia.”

The Citizens Bank Pro Bono Award is presented by Citizens Bank, the Philadelphia Bar Foundation and the Philadelphia Bar Association. It is given annually to a Philadelphia law firm demonstrating outstanding volunteer efforts to help provide legal services to those in need. The award recognizes Pepper’s high level of service in representing individual pro bono clients, partnering with public interest law centers in impact litigation and demonstrating leadership in supporting agencies dedicated to public interest law.

Pepper was nominated for the award by Community Legal Services (CLS), the Pennsylvania Health Law Project, Pennsylvanians for Modern Courts and Philadelphia VIP. Pepper attorneys have worked with these organizations for many years and continue to work in leading public interest efforts with all of these agencies.

“Pepper has provided ongoing support to Community Legal Services, Philadelphia VIP and other public interest law centers for decades,” said Mr. Heideck. “From the time our late partner, William Klaus, helped write the Philadelphia Bar Association report that led to the establishment of CLS, and served as its first board chair, Pepper lawyers have been leading supporters of the public interest community.”

Mr. Heideck credited the firm’s ongoing commitment to pro bono and community service as the reason Pepper was chosen for the award. In an internal announcement at Pepper, Mr. Heideck said: “Congratulations to all Pepper attorneys and staff who have participated in pro bono work this year. Your hard work and dedication have made it possible for us to receive this wonderful recognition.

Orrick Wins Outstanding Corporate Grantmaker Award
The Association of Fundraising Professionals and Northern California Grantmakers will honor Orrick as Outstanding Corporate Grantmaker of the Bay Area on National Philanthropy Day, November 14, 2006. Karen Johnson-McKewan will accept the award on behalf of the firm during lunch at the Westin St. Francis in San Francisco.

The Outstanding Corporate Grantmaker award has been in existence for 20 years, and Orrick is the first law firm to earn this honor. To qualify, a corporation or its foundation must demonstrate outstanding commitment through financial and in-kind support and through encouragement and motivation of their employees to take leadership roles through philanthropic and community involvement.

Orrick earned this honor for its continuing role supporting the Embarcadero YMCA. The San Francisco lawyers and staff volunteer year-round at Bessie Carmichael Elementary School in a program which provides homework assistance and recreational activities for students. A unique partnership with the Embarcadero YMCA, the program was launched in 2003 to create a safe environment for kids.

"Community responsibility, philanthropy and pro bono legal services are an important part of Orrick's fabric," said Karen Johnson-McKewan. "Working with organizations like the YMCA is not only our responsibility as good corporate citizens, but our attorneys and staff take great pride in seeing the impact our work makes in the community."

“Orrick’s financial support to the YMCA means more children can enroll in our after school program at no cost to their families. But what makes Orrick’s involvement special is the personal commitment they bring to this relationship," said Charles Collins, President & CEO of the YMCA of San Francisco. "Orrick employees volunteer as on-site tutors and mentors, designed, organized and funded field trips to expand the children’s horizons, and host an annual carnival for the children and their families. Orrick exemplifies the YMCA’s core values.

Baxter stated, "It’s the natural next step in the strategies of both the firms, and both firms have long, distinguished histories of serving clients. Both firms are among the best of what they do, where they do it in the world. And both firms see a need to build on their foundations and we are as compatible as two leading law firms could be in our strengths and our capacity to add to the other.
