Hermes Sargent Bates is a Best Company, Again!
Dallas law firm Hermes Sargent Bates, LLP was recently named one of the Best Companies to Work for in Texas. This was the second annual program created by the publishers of TEXAS MONTHLY, the Texas Association of Business (TAB), the Texas State Council of the Society for Human Resource Management (TSC-SHRM), and Best Companies Group. The February 2007 issue of Texas Monthly will reveal the numbered rankings of all 60 companies, with a gala awards luncheon on January 31, 2007, in ustin.

The program is part of a multi-year initiative to motivate companies in the state to focus, measure, and move their workplace environments towards excellence. The survey and award program were designed to identify, recognize and honor the best employers in Texas, benefiting the state's economy, its workforce and businesses.

To be considered for participation, companies had to fulfill the following eligibility requirements:
- Be a for-profit or not-for-profit business;
- Be a publicly or privately held business;
- Have a facility in Texas;
- Have at least 25 employees in Texas.

Companies from across the state entered the two-part process to determine the Best Companies to Work for in Texas. The first part consisted of evaluating each nominated company's workplace policies, practices, philosophy, systems and demographics. The second part consisted of an employee survey to measure the employee experience. The combined scores determined the top companies and the final ranking. Best Companies Group managed the overall registration and survey process in Texas with assistance from ModernThink LLC, who analyzed the data and used their expertise to determine the final rankings.

HSB is honored to be included on this prestigious list. As the largest firm in Texas with a female name partner, HSB's leaders recognize that the firm’s success depends on the quality of their attorneys and staff “The happiness of our attorneys and staff directly benefits our workplace environment, and clients,” said Dwayne Hermes. “As a repeat winner, we recognize that each employee adds to the whole of helping the firm maintain its status, and we thank each of our employees for their part in helping the firm achieve this honor.

Bell, Boyd Establishes Trademark Prize at Chicago-Kent
Bell, Boyd & Lloyd has established the Dolores K. Hanna Trademark Prize at Chicago-Kent College of Law to honor Dolores K. Hanna, who headed Bell, Boyd's Trademarks Group and served as special trademarks counsel until her retirement earlier this year. Ms. Hanna is a graduate of Chicago-Kent and a recipient of the Chicago-Kent Alumni Association Alumni Professional Achievement Award.

The Dolores K. Hanna Trademark Prize will recognize a Chicago-Kent student in an intellectual property or legal writing course who writes the best paper on the subject of trademarks or trademark law. It will be awarded at the end of the 2007, 2008 and 2009 school years and will be announced at Chicago-Kent's 29th annual All-Alumni Award Luncheon on November 16 at the University Club of Chicago.

"Dolores Hanna's exemplary legal career has spanned more than five decades. She has consistently provided leadership in and service to the practice of intellectual property law both in Chicago and throughout the nation. She has tirelessly served the organized bar and mentored students and young lawyers in the field. Bell, Boyd is pleased to recognize Dolores' commitment by creating this award," said Robert M. Barrett, who heads the firm's Patent Group.

Ms. Hanna led the extensive study of the U.S. trademark system which resulted in the enactment of the Trademark Law Revision Act of 1988, the first major revision of the Lanham Act (the 1946 Federal Trademark Statute). In her many years of practice, she counseled national and international companies on their trademark portfolios, supervised trademark litigation and participated in license and merger transactions. Prior to joining Bell, Boyd in 2000, she practiced at the law firm of Hill & Simpson and also served as trademark counsel for Kraft, Inc.

Ms. Hanna has been prominently involved in numerous industry and bar associations, serving as president of the International Trademark Association (INTA), the Intellectual Property Law Association of Chicago, the Women's Bar Association of Illinois and the Cook County Court Watchers. In 1990, as chair of INTA's Brand Names Education Foundation, she established the Saul Lefkowitz Moot Court Competition, to introduce students to important issues in trademark law while practicing their advocacy skills. The competition's best brief award is named in her honor.

In 2003, Ms. Hanna worked with Chicago-Kent, Loyola University of Chicago School of Law, Northwestern University School of Law and other intellectual property firms to co-found the Chicago Intellectual Property Alliance, a nonprofit organization to promote intellectual property activities in the area. She has also served on the boards of the Public Interest Law Initiative and the Advisory Board of the Center for Intellectual Property Law of the John Marshall Law School.

She is the recipient of numerous honors and awards, including the Chicago Bar Association's (CBA) Justice John Paul Stevens award, a Founder's Award from the CBA Alliance for Women and a President's Award from the International Trademark Association. The Illinois State Bar Association has honored her as a senior counselor with 50 years of membership in good standing and as a laureate of the Academy of Illinois Lawyers where she serves on the board of regents.
