Mayer, Brown, Rowe & Maw appoints Nottingham at Kaplan Law School in London to provide LPC
Mayer, Brown, Rowe & Maw LLP's London office has signed up with Nottingham at Kaplan Law School in London to provide, on an exclusive basis, the Legal Practice Course for its future trainees from 2007.

Nottingham at Kaplan was selected as the preferred LPC provider based on its continued excellent rating from the Law Society and proven quality of teaching over a number of years.

Mayer, Brown, Rowe & Maw London General Counsel and Training Principal, Stephen Gare, said of the decision: "For some time we have been looking to appoint a single course provider for prospective trainees. The UK is fortunate to have several excellent institutions which provide exceptionally high levels of training, however, we are pleased to be teaming up with Nottingham at Kaplan, which is a proven leader in legal training in both the UK and the U.S. We are particularly excited about the opportunities this venture will give us to develop a programme which, while enhancing quality in purely UK areas, will also enable us to deliver training which is in keeping with our position as an international law firm".

Professor Peter Jones, Senior Pro Vice Chancellor of Nottingham Trent University commented: "We are delighted that Mayer, Brown, Rowe & Maw, very much a pioneer in legal training, is the first firm to sign up to the Nottingham at Kaplan Law School partnership. We look forward to working with the firm to provide a programme to advance the firm's unique market position and that over the next few years we will help the firm to develop some truly world-class trainees."

FTC Kaplan CEO Peter Houillon added: "Kaplan and Nottingham Law School launched the London-based Legal Practice Course earlier this year and we are pleased that such a prestigious law firm as Mayer, Brown, Rowe & Maw is the first firm to sign on an exclusive basis.

Hunton & Williams and Wachovia Obtain Largest Sanctions Award by Tennessee Court
Judge W. Dale Young, of Blount County, Tennessee recently entered what is believed to be the largest sanctions award ever granted by a Tennessee court. In his Opinion awarding the sanctions, Judge Young sanctioned Martin E. O’Boyle, a Florida real estate developer, more than $1.2 million for engaging in frivolous litigation tactics. He found that O’Boyle repeatedly made arguments and took positions “that would maximize the inconvenience and cost to the Defendants” and ordered that Mr. O’Boyle pay $550,000 to Wachovia Bank, $700,000 to Alcoa Calderwood, LLC, and $5,000 to the Clerk of the Court to compensate the taxpayers of Blount County for the “extreme burden” imposed on the Clerk as a result of the “frivolous litigation . . . spawned by the zealous emperament of O’Boyle.” The sanctions order is the latest chapter in a contentious awsuit brought by O’Boyle and his partnership, New Midland Plaza Associates, against Wachovia Bank and Alcoa Calderwood relating to the New Midland shopping center in Maryville.

O’Boyle first sued First Union Bank in 1999, claiming that they wrongfully attempted to foreclose the shopping center. First Union Bank later merged with Wachovia. After a 7- year battle, which included depositions from Colorado to New York, Judge Young ismissed all of O’Boyle’s and the other Plaintiffs’ claims in December 2005. Wachovia’s counsel, John Lucas, expressed satisfaction with the latest award, saying, “Although it does not fully compensate Wachovia for all the fees it was forced to incur, this is a significant victory for Wachovia and the financial services industry. Judge Young’s opinion will go a long way toward discouraging scorched-earth litigation tactics in Tennessee.

Burns named to Raleigh City Council Environmental Advisory Board
John D. Burns, an associate with the Raleigh office of Hunton & Williams LLP, was named as vice chairman of the Raleigh City Council's Environmental Advisory Board.

The City Council established the Environmental Advisory Board in June to address matters related to the impact of city operations on the environment.

A 1997 graduate of Wake Forest University School of Law, Burns has been with Hunton & Williams since 2001. His practice focuses on commercial litigation and creditor's rights in bankruptcy matters.

Burns is an advocate for environmental issues, an officer of the Wake County Democratic Party and a member of the Sierra Club.

The board is currently studying vehicle fuel efficiency in the city's motor vehicle fleet, energy efficiency in new and existing city facilities, and the Kyoto Protocol, an international agreement that calls for industrialized nations to reduce their collective emissions of greenhouse gases. The group hopes to reduce the city's emissions and fossil fuel usage by 20 percent over the next five years.
