Chapman and Cutler Ranks No. 4 Nationally in Latest American Lawyer Survey of Summer Associate Satisfaction – Top Chicago Firm in the National Ranking
Finance law firm Chapman and Cutler LLP, which last year ranked and impressive sixth nationally in American Lawyer magazine’s annual survey of summer associate satisfaction, rose even higher this year, placing Number 4 among 172 law firms assessed around the U.S. on quality of work and life issues.

In moving into the Top 5, Chapman and Cutler was the highest-placed finisher of any American Lawyer 200 firm and also the highest nationally ranked law firm in Chicago. Chapman is also one of only a few firms to take a Top 10 position two years running.

American Lawyer’s summer associate survey assesses law firms on 28 separate categories based on the experiences of the law school students who populate firms across the country each summer in hopes of future employment. Although law firms work hard to give their summers a good time, they also want to present genuine working conditions, particularly since summer associates are vying for offers to return as full-time associates following graduation.

“We’re pleased that this summer class, like its predecessors, recognized that Chapman is a great place to work that gives associates a rewarding taste of the legal profession on so many levels,” said Carol Thompson, Chapman and Cutler’s national hiring partner.

With 5 points representing the highest rating in any category, Chapman drew an overall average score of 4.88 among this year’s summer associates, including 11 perfect marks in such areas as work assignments, firm’s sense of mission, communication and leadership, as well as the all-important sense of collegiality.

Ratings of 4.8 or higher included attributes such as diversity, interesting work, partner-associate interaction, high level of responsibility, and honesty – or what American Lawyer describes as “how accurately the firm portrayed itself during interviews.” The firm’s overall rating as a place to work: a hard to beat 4.91.

Ms. Thompson noted that summer associates receive ample exposure to the firm’s broad financial service practices, including banking, corporate finance and securities, public finance, tax, bankruptcy and financial litigation. “We are constantly refining the program to allow young attorneys-in-training to get a realistic feel for challenging, high-quality
2 finance work, while showing them a working environment that welcomes individual lifestyles. This combination has repeatedly proven to yield the best results for our clients as well as our attorneys,” she added.

“Once again, our summer associates have confirmed what we know to be true: Chapman and Cutler is a great place to build a legal career in a richly diversified financial services legal practice,” said Rick Cosgrove, Chapman and Cutler’s chief executive partner.

“I believe our performance among summer associates on the American Lawyer’s satisfaction survey is indicative of the general view of all of our attorneys,” he continued. “We take pride in our ability to handle top quality finance work, while ensuring a close-knit and respectful environment for our teams of lawyers. Our clients notice and appreciate that Chapman attorneys want to handle cutting edge work, and also want to be part of a firm with a clear sense of mission and confidence. We also think we’re a pretty enjoyable place to work.

Bryan Cave Leads Naming Rights Negotiations for New Mets Stadium
A multioffice Bryan Cave LLP team handled the naming rights negotiations that will put the New York Mets in Citi Field ballpark come 2009. Bryan Cave represented Citigroup Global Consumer Group in what reportedly is the most expensive naming rights deal in sports history, although details remain confidential.

The 20-year sponsorship deal, announced Monday, Nov. 13, includes options for both the Mets and Citigroup that could extend it to 35 years. The Mets have played at Shea Stadium since 1964. Construction on the new ballpark, next to the current stadium in Queens, began last summer.

Citigroup is one of the world's largest full-service banks, with 200 million customers in more than 100 countries. The deal came to Bryan Cave through New York Partner Bill Hibsher, who was contacted by the general counsel of Citigroup Global Consumer, asking whether anyone at Bryan Cave had experience in naming rights agreements for sports venues. Through Bryan Cave’s “one firm” way of practicing law, Hibsher was put in touch with St. Louis Partner Steve Korenblat, who outlined for Citigroup Bryan Cave’s leadership role in a variety of stadium projects, including naming rights negotiations for the Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis.

The Bryan Cave team representing Citigroup was headed by Korenblat, Mark Goran and Susan Easton, all in St. Louis. Others participating in various aspects of the project were Carol Van Cleef in the DC office and Mary Reichert, Lucinda Althauser, Dan Crowe, Ryan Davis and Jill Giorgio in St. Louis.

Robinson Cole Attorney Wins Insurance Case With Significant Implications For Employers
R&C Trial & Appellate Advocacy Partner Steven P. Perlmutter recently won a case in federal court in Massachusetts which has important implications for employers. The case, Scottsdale Insurance Company v. Carrabassett Trading Company, __ F. Supp. 2d __ (D. Mass. 2006), is a wake-up call to employers utilizing alternative staffing arrangements (e.g. leased workers, temporary workers) instead of regular employees as part of an effort to save costs. The lesson of the case is that employers may see these financial savings dissipated if they are not careful about making sure their insurance covers leased workers who work for them for an indefinite or substantial period of time. If the employer does not have such insurance in place, it may find that it, not its insurance company, is responsible for any judgment obtained against the company by an injured leased worker.
