Miller Nash LLP-Seattle announces six new associates
Miller Nash is pleased to announce the addition of attorneys Lisa C. Lui, Sarah MacLeod, Samantha Pak, Aubrey A. Seffernick, Robyn M. Tessin, and Michael J. Urbaitis to the firm.

In addition to being admitted to practice in the state of Washington, she is also admitted to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Pak is a member of the Washington State Bar Association, the Asian Bar Association of Washington, the Korean American Bar Association of Washington, and the Washington State Patent Law Association.

International Paralegal Association Honors Miller Nash Professional
The International Paralegal Management Association (the “IPMA”) recently honored Elise Brickner-Schulz of Miller Nash LLP with its prestigious President’s Award. The award is presented to outstanding professionals in the paralegal industry.

The IPMA’s mission is to advance the paralegal management profession by providing education, advocacy, relationship-building, and communication. Each year, the IPMA’s president presents the award to a member who embodies the highest standards of the profession. Brickner-Schulz, director of legal support services at Miller Nash, has been an energetic and active IPMA member for six years, participating on several committees. She was presented with the award by President Tracy O'Keefe at the 22nd Annual IPMA Conference in Denver, Co., October 26.

Brickner-Schulz’s contribution to the organization has ranged from serving as chair of the Membership Committee (2005-2006) to revitalizing the organization’s mentoring program. She was recently appointed to the Executive Committee and is the new secretary and treasurer.

“I consider the IPMA an outstanding organization and being recognized for supporting its work means a great deal to me,” said Brickner-Schulz. “The President’s Award represents not only a tremendous professional validation for my years of service to the organization but, because I hold the president in such high regard, a personal one as well.”

At Miller Nash, Brickner-Schulz has assisted in more than 50 trials and has designed and implemented in-house litigation management systems, as well as coordinated and managed 30 outside counsel to work on more than 80 cases nationwide.

John Bentas Joins McLane Law Firm
The law firm of McLane, Graf, Raulerson & Middleton, P.A., with offices in Manchester, Portsmouth, and Concord, is pleased to announce that John Bentas has joined the firm. Working in the Corporate Law Group, he will focus on matters involving small businesses, securities and mergers.

John's background has been focused in mergers and acquisitions, general corporate governance and advice, not-for-profit formation and federal and state tax exemption recognition.

He is a member of the New Hampshire, Massachusetts and American Bar Associations. He is admitted to practice in New Hampshire and Massachusetts.

John graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in Business Finance in 1991 from Bentley College. He received his Juris Doctorate from Boston College in 2000.

He volunteers time to the United Way Community Allocations Program and St. George's Greek Orthodox Church. John also serves as the President of the Stone Terrace Condominium Association and is involved with the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life program, serving as Recruitment Chair and member of the Planning Committee.

EARLY AGGRESSIVE WORKUP LEADS TO AN EARLY DISMISSAL FOR LOWIS & GELLEN CLIENTS
Lowis & Gellen Partners Pamela Gellen and Scott Wolfe recently represented several psychiatrists and other healthcare professionals at a Chicago teaching hospital. The clients were accused of committing psychiatric malpractice. Moreover, the plaintiff in the case is a psychiatrist at another psychiatric teaching hospital in Chicago. The plaintiff alleged that the mistreatment, including the administration of electroconvulsive therapy a/k/a shock therapy, caused him to loose his psychiatric practice, teaching appointment, led to licensure and regulatory problems and other damages. Lowis & Gellen aggressively worked up the case performing internal investigations, interviews with staff, a comprehensive investigation into the plaintiff's background and analysis of employment records and medical records for the plaintiff psychiatrist. Based on the investigation, firm Partners Pam Gellen and Scott Wolfe filed Motions challenging the adequacy of the lawsuit on several grounds. After multiple briefs and hearings, the Judge agreed with Pam and Scott and dismissed the lawsuit before their clients even had to give a deposition.

Kennedy Covington Partner Wins Business Leader Magazine's 2006 Women Extraordinaire Award
Kennedy Covington, one of the largest law firms in the Carolinas, is proud to announce that Mary Beth Johnston, partner in the Health Law Section, is being honored with a 2006 Women Extraordinaire Award from Business Leader magazine.

Women Extraordinaire is a prestigious award which recognizes "exceptional women who give freely of themselves to help improve the lives of others." Business Leader magazine, a monthly publication covering the Triangle area of North Carolina, received a record 240 nominations for the 2006 awards. Johnston is one of only ten women being honored.

"Not only is Mary Beth an excellent model for the professional world, her personal obligations and dedication to her community make her an excellent model citizen," said Kent Christison, Kennedy Covington, Partner-in-Charge, Raleigh and RTP offices. "We are grateful to have someone like Mary Beth be a part of our team at Kennedy Covington and part of our community."

Johnston began her law career in 1983 and since has made tremendous contributions to her profession and to her community. After joining Kennedy Covington in 2002, she assisted with the facilitation of the opening of the Research Triangle Park office. In addition, Johnston has vice-chaired the American Bar Association's health law section's eHealth and Privacy Interest Group; has received awards for her pro bono work; was president of the NC Society of Health Care Attorneys; has been active in the North Carolina Bar Association; and is a frequent speaker at the state and national level. Johnston is also involved with the growth and development of Kennedy Covington and its lawyers.

"Mary Beth sets the standard for excellence. She has depth of knowledge and experience in health law, which she diligently applies in a practical manner to resolve her clients' issues and concerns as well as facilitate their capitalization on opportunities. Her effort and judgment on behalf of her clients as well as her fellow attorneys sets the standard for all of us," said Christison.

Johnston has been recognized for her pro bono work with the Wake County Bar Association and has given generous time and pro bono legal services to North Carolina hospices in the Triangle and across the state. She is a long-time member of the Hayes Barton Baptist Church in Raleigh and also an ordained deacon and church trustee. In addition, Johnston sponsors a young family of Montagnard refugees, dedicating time to everything from assistance with job applications to transportation and preschool enrollment.

The Women Extraordinaire awards are in its fifth year of honoring commitment, contribution and impact in society. The reception luncheon is scheduled for December 6, 2006 at North Ridge Country Club in Raleigh, N.C.

Hunton & Williams Promotes Two in New York
Hunton & Williams LLP is pleased to announce the election of Dee Ann Dorsey to its partnership and the elevation of John Rogers to Counsel, effective November 14. Based in the firm’s New York office, Dorsey and Rogers are members of the firm’s global capital markets and M&A practice.

Dee Ann Dorsey’s practice concentrates on capital markets, securities offerings, SEC compliance and corporate governance matters, mergers and acquisitions and general corporate counseling. She regularly acts for issuers and underwriters in connection with securities offerings, primarily in the energy industry. Dorsey received her law degree from the University of Tennessee College of Law.

John M. “Jack” Rogers focuses his practice on advertising, marketing, promotions and general corporate matters. He provides counsel to consumer products companies on their event marketing and sponsorship programs, as well as their brand advertising and other marketing initiatives. In addition, he provides strategic legal analysis to clients based on the regulatory and litigation environments in which the clients operate. Rogers graduated from The University of Notre Dame and received his law degree from St. John’s University School of Law.

Twelve Named to Lawdragon 3000; Three to The 500
Twelve Hunton & Williams lawyers have been named to The Lawdragon 3000, a directory of lawyers and judges representing less than one percent of the legal professional in the United States. Of the twelve, three were selected for the magazine’s annual guide of the best lawyers and judges practicing in the United States, The Lawdragon 500.

Hunton & Williams lawyers in The Lawdragon 3000 directory are Virginia Albrecht, Fernando Alonso, Kevin Buckley, Allen Goolsby, Robert Grey, Thurston Moore, Dean Pope, Alan Rudlin, Tom Slater, Bob Tata, Gary Thompson and Bucky Vaughan.
