Mello and Smith Join Hanson Bridgett Partnership
Hanson, Bridgett, Marcus, Vlahos & Rudy, LLP is pleased to announce the election of Paul B. Mello and Scott C. Smith to the partnership, effective January 1, 2007.

Paul B. Mello is a member of the firm's Labor and Employment Section and is based in San Francisco. He represents employers and management in wrongful termination, sexual harassment and employment discrimination litigation. Mello has substantial experience in internal complaint investigations, administrative investigations, mediation, arbitration, trial, and post-trial issues. His practice also includes counseling employers and management in litigation prevention and compliance issues including leave of absence, accommodation of disabilities, wage and hour, employee discipline and termination, internal investigations, and personnel policy issues. Prior to joining Hanson Bridgett, Mello practiced employment law with Pillsbury Winthrop. Mello earned a J.D. (1995) and a B.A. (1991) from University of California, Davis.

Scott C. Smith is a member of the firm's Business Section and is based in San Francisco. Smith's practice emphasizes corporate, tax and real estate law. He works with private and public companies on equity financings, debt transactions, securities matters, mergers and acquisitions and general business matters. Scott also represents emerging companies in connection with entity formation issues, licensing and other technology related matters. Before joining Hanson Bridgett, Smith practiced corporate, tax and real estate law with Bingham McCutchen. Smith received an LL.M. (1996) and a J.D. (1995) from University of Houston, an M.A. (1994) in International Relations from University of Southern California and a B.A. (1990) from California State University, Fresno.

Graydon Head & Ritchey LLP Announces the Addition of Kevin L. Murphy
Graydon Head & Richey LLP announces the addition of Kevin L. Murphy as Of Counsel to the Firm’s Commercial Litigation and Dispute Resolution Client Service Department.

Murphy has experience in a myriad of areas including, but are not limited to, commercial litigation, product liability, patents/trademark/torts, contracts, corporate and sports law. He began his legal career as a Judicial Law Clerk to the Honorable William O. Bertelsman, United States District Court Judge in Covington, Kentucky in 1981. Since then, Murphy has been in private practice counseling clients in a variety of industries including representation of Major League Baseball athletes and umpires. He has been recognized with inclusion in The Best Lawyers In America since 2003.

Murphy serves on the Board of Directors for the Children’s Law Center and is a member of the Northern Kentucky Convention Center Board. He has also served as a member of the Placement Board for Salmon P. Chase College of Law, and as President for the Salmon P. Chase American Inns of Court. He is a former member of the Board of Directors of Ohio Valley Goodwill Industries Rehabilitation Center, Inc. and has served as President, Officer and Member of the Kenton County Republican Executive Committee.

Murphy is admitted to practice in Kentucky and Ohio and in the U.S. District Court, Eastern District of Kentucky; U.S. District Court, Western District of Kentucky; the U.S. District Court, Southern District of Ohio; and the U.S. Court of Appeals, Sixth Circuit. He is a member of the Kentucky Bar Association, the Ohio State Bar Association, the American Bar Association, the Cincinnati Bar Association and the Northern Kentucky Bar Association.

Murphy earned his law degree from Salmon P. Chase College of Law, where he served as Articles Editor for the Law Review. He graduated with a B.S. in English from the State University of New York.

Kaufman Named One of America's 500 Leading Lawyers
Thompson Hine partner Steve Kaufman has been named by Lawdragon magazine as one of the top lawyers in the country. Lawdragon, a national publishing company devoted to the legal community, has published its second annual Lawdragon 500 Leading Lawyers in America. The list was created through independent research and documented peer and client reviews.

Kaufman, a member of Thompson Hine's Executive Committee and former chair of the firm's Business Litigation practice, was one of only five Cleveland lawyers to make the list, and was identified as a “master litigator.” Kaufman is a past president of the Cleveland Bar Association.

SCHIFF HARDIN MOURNS THE PASSING OF TODD D. FREER
Todd D. Freer, counsel in Schiff Hardin's Public Law and Finance Group, passed away at age 55 on December 12, 2006.

Mr. Freer's practice focused on serving as bond counsel, borrower's counsel, credit enhancer's counsel, issuer's counsel, legislative counsel, purchaser’s counsel, and underwriter's counsel and providing advice relating to all aspects of public finance in a wide variety of transactions and other situations.

Ronald S. Safer, Schiff Hardin's Managing Partner, expressed the firm’s sadness, "We will miss him more than I can say."

In lieu of flowers, it is requested that donations be made to the Todd Freer Children's Fund, c/o the Williams-Kampp Funeral Home.

Arnold and Goldberg of Pepper Hamilton Elected to Philadelphia Bar Assocation Tax Section
Joan C. Arnold, a partner with Pepper Hamilton LLP and head of the firm’s Tax Practice Group, has been elected to a two-year term as chairperson of the Philadelphia Bar Association Tax Section.

Howard S. Goldberg, also a partner in Pepper’s Tax Practice Group, has been elected to a three-year term on the Council to the Tax Section.

Ms. Arnold concentrates her practice on U.S. and international corporate tax issues. She is a past chair of the American Bar Association Tax Section’s Committee on U.S. Activities of Foreigners and Tax Treaties, and a past chair of its Subcommittee on Withholding Issues and Portfolio Investments. Ms. Arnold was the principal author of the ABA Tax Section’s comments submitted on treasury regulations dealing with cross-border financing structures, and a contributing author of the Tax Section comments on the U.S. Model Income Tax Treaty.

Mr. Goldberg focuses his practice on tax planning for domestic and international transactions. His practice includes advising on mergers, acquisitions, reorganizations, dispositions, private equity and other capital markets transactions, and restructurings in and out of bankruptcy.

The Philadelphia Bar Association Tax Section acts as a resource for members, collecting and disseminating information, and offering recommendations on proposed tax law, regulations and procedures. Specialized committees update members on tax law developments at the state and federal levels and comment on proposed legislation and regulations. The committees also organize meetings with government representatives and colleagues.
