Ternes to Moderate National Teleconference on Clean Air Act and Nanotechnology
Mary Ellen Ternes, an environmental attorney with McAfee & Taft, has organized and will moderate a panel discussion entitled “The Clean Air Act and Nanotechnology” on January 16, 2007, one of several national teleconferences on nanotechnology and environmental law in a series produced by the American Bar Association Section of Environment, Energy, and Resources (SEER) as part of its Nanotechnology Project.

Ternes is the primary author of SEER’s Clean Air Act Nanotechnology Position Paper and is a board member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers Nanoscale Science and Engineering Forum. In this discussion, Ternes is joined by distinguished panelists including Jim D. Mason, executive director of the Oklahoma Nanotechnology Initiative and vice president of technology initiatives for the Oklahoma Technology Council and nationally recognized environmental attorneys including Ann Klee, former EPA general counsel; Patrice Simms with the Natural Resources Defense Council; and Robert Martineau, co-editor of the ABA’s Clean Air Handbook.

The teleconference will review the science, technology, law, policy and commercial implications of engineered nanoscale materials when viewed as promising materials in air contaminant detection and monitoring, as regulated emissions subject to engineering controls, potential air contaminants, and as fuel additives.

Ternes, whose legal practice is devoted to all facets of environmental law including the Clean Air Act, is an active member and frequent presenter at seminars sponsored by the Environmental Federation of Oklahoma, Air and Waste Management Association, American Institute of Chemical Engineers, and American, Arkansas and Oklahoma bar associations' environmental asections. Her achievements in the area of environmental law have earned her inclusion in the International Who’s Who of Environmental Lawyers and The Best Lawyers in America.

LATHAM & WATKINS CONTINUES EUROPEAN EXPANSION WITH SPANISH LAUNCH
Latham & Watkins LLP1 announces the opening of offices in Spain, in a move that strengthens its practice in Europe and globally. Led by highly-respected M&A partner, José Luis Blanco, the practice will have its principal office in Madrid complemented by an additional office in Barcelona.

Blanco joins Latham from Cuatrecasas effective January 1, 2007 and will serve as the Office Managing Partner for Spain. Latham's practice focus in Spain will be largely on M&A and private equity transactions, complemented by acquisition finance and competition law.

Possessing a formidable transactional reputation in the Spanish market, Blanco represents strategic buyers and private equity clients. In 2006, he represented the Yell Group, the British Yellow Pages company, in its multi-billion euro acquisition of Telefónica Publicidad e Información, the Spanish Yellow Pages provider. He also regularly represents Repsol, the largest Spanish oil and gas company. On the private equity side, he has represented The Carlyle Group in both acquisitions and dispositions in Spain, as well as consortium acquisitions involving multiple global private equity firms.

"After careful study of the market, we are confident that the conditions are appropriate for our firm to build a presence in Spain, one of the most vibrant transactional markets in Europe," said Latham & Watkins' Chairman and Managing Partner Robert M. Dell. "This is an exciting development that continues our successful momentum in Europe, which has been driven by our unwavering commitment to client service and our strategic goal of providing the highest level of legal services throughout Europe and worldwide."

The opening of the Spanish offices takes Latham to 10 offices in Europe, with more than 380 attorneys in the region. The firm represents a roster of blue chip companies, financial institutions and private equity firms, and is widely recognized for its pre-eminent capability advising on complex domestic and cross-border transactions.

John Watson, Vice Chair of the Global Corporate Department, said: "Led by José Luis Blanco, our offices in Spain will provide a strong component to our European and global M&A capability. José's track record in building and integrating teams is impressive, and he has been involved in some of the most high-profile transactions in the country. We are extremely motivated to create an elite team of M&A professionals to serve the high end of the Spanish market."

"The Spanish economy has been among one of the fastest-growing in Europe over the past decade. The addition of a premier Spanish corporate capability is a huge step forward in our strategy because we can now offer our global client base and private equity sponsors an integrated transactional offering in Spain," said David Miles, European member of the firm's Executive Committee.

"Our ambition is to build a leading and innovative practice that is very focused in the segments we want to target. It became clear to me that Latham & Watkins is the firm that will best support my vision in terms of the people, practice breadth and resources required to succeed. When you combine these qualities with an entrepreneurialism that few firms can match, you have a winning platform. I look forward to working closely with my new colleagues in Europe and beyond in pursuit of our collective goal to be the leading corporate team in Spain," said Blanco.

Blanco was educated at the University Autónoma of Barcelona, where he received his J.D. in 1984, and Yale Law School, where he received his LL.M in 1986. He joined Garrigues in its Barcelona office in 1986, becoming a partner in 1996. In 1998 he moved to Cuatrecasas, where he was appointed global head of M&A in 2005.

Freshfields to go carbon neutral in 2007
International law firm Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer announced today that it will become carbon neutral across all its offices in 2007 by off-setting its carbon emissions and taking additional steps actively to reduce its emissions.

This commitment is a progression of targets set in Freshfields’ first CSR report, published in January 2006. The report was highly commended by independent consultancy, The Corporate Citizenship Company, which noted that this was the first CSR report produced by an international law firm (see www.freshfields.com/csr).

‘Actively taking steps to reduce the environmental impact of doing business is a high priority for us. It is important to our partners, our clients, and our employees. We take environmental considerations seriously and are working with the Carbon Neutral Company to assess our emissions in each office, and implement ways of not just offsetting, but significantly reducing, our emissions over time,’ said Guy Morton, joint senior partner, Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer.

Konstantin Mettenheimer, joint senior partner, commented: ‘In practice, reducing our global carbon emissions will mean making changes in energy use and working practices. There is a great deal we can do, for example, by reducing our air freight and air travel by using technology such as videoconferencing more widely, increasing our waste recycling, and reducing paper use.’

The move to carbon neutrality is just one part of Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer’s corporate social responsibility programme, which spans the firm’s community volunteering, pro bono, environmental, diversity and health and safety commitments and activities. The firm aims to produce its second CSR report in line with Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) guidelines in the second half of 2007.

Mr. Hament, formerly a partner with GrayRobinson, will continue representing clients in the areas of labor and employment law.

“We are delighted that Andy has agreed to join Ford & Harrison and contribute to our growth in Florida by opening our Melbourne office,” said Tom Garwood, the firm’s Florida regional managing partner. “His experience with businesses in the Space and Treasure Coast area of eastern Florida as well as his distinguished reputation as a labor and employment lawyer will be of great benefit to our firm.”

Mr. Hament represents private and public employers in all areas of labor and employment law, including discrimination and wrongful discharge litigation, employment and severance agreements, whistleblower investigations and litigation, non-compete and trade secret litigation, wage and hour cases, union organizing, collective bargaining, strike and picketing situations, and grievance arbitrations.
