Cozen O'Connor Member John R. Washlick Lectures at Vha East Coast’s Pay-For-Performance Seminar
Cozen O’Connor member John R. Washlick recently lectured on “Successful Contracting for Pay-for-Performance” at the “Pay-for-Performance – The Next Steps” seminar hosted by VHA East Coast, LLC and held in Feasterville, PA.In the lecture, Washlick compared the new healthcare provider pay-for-performance model to the traditional payment model, described the legal and regulatory issues and performance indicators involved in successfully structuring these programs, and offered suggestions for structuring provider contracts using the pay-for-performance model.

Washlick concentrates his practice in health law and practices in the firm’s HIPAA and corporate compliance practice from the Philadelphia and Cherry Hill offices. He advises hospitals, physicians, entrepreneurs and health care organizations on a variety of corporate, tax and health care regulatory matters, serving as both general and outside counsel for health care mergers, affiliations and joint ventures, including planning and developing hospital/physician integration and incentive compensation arrangements.

Washlick is a member of the American Bar Association, Pennsylvania Society of Health Care Attorneys and the health and hospital section of the New Jersey State Bar Association. He is past chair (2003-2006) of the Hospitals and Health Systems Practice Group of the American Health Lawyers Association, co-chair of the Health Law Committee of the Camden County Bar Association, and serves on the health care law committee of the Pennsylvania Bar Association and the health law and non-profit Committees of the Philadelphia Bar Association.

Washlick is an adjunct professor of law in the health law LL.M. program at Widener University School of Law and an adjunct professor of law in the graduate tax program at Villanova University. A certified public accountant, Washlick was a tax manager in the national office of a Big Four accounting firm before practicing law. He is admitted to practice in Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

Washlick is listed in The Best Lawyers in America and was selected a “Pennsylvania Super Lawyer” by his peers, appearing in Philadelphia Magazine and Pennsylvania Super Lawyers. He is the author of the first edition of the portfolio “Joint Ventures Involving Tax-Exempt Organizations” and of the first and second edition portfolio, “Nonprofit Healthcare Organizations: Federal Income Tax Issues,” both of which are published by Tax Management Inc.

A resident of Mt. Laurel, N.J., Washlick earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Rhode Island (B.S., 1978), his law degree from Southwestern University School of Law (J.D., 1986), and his master of law from Georgetown University Law Center (LL.M., 1990).

Dianne Coffino and Ben Hoch Join Covington’s Corporate Reorganization and Bankruptcy Practice; Jack Bodner Joins Covington’s Mergers and Acquisitions Practice
Covington & Burling LLP announced today that Jack Bodner, Dianne Coffino, and Ben Hoch have joined the firm as partners. Ms. Coffino and Mr. Hoch join Covington’s corporate restructuring and bankruptcy practice group, and Mr. Bodner joins Covington’s mergers and acquisitions group. All three will be resident in the firm’s New York office.

Covington has a leading international corporate practice, including both bankruptcy and mergers and acquisitions practices. Covington’s mergers group recently advised on over $80 billion in mergers and acquisition transactions, including for Kerr-McGee, JLG Industries and Oregon Steel Mills. Covington has also advised on major bankruptcy matters, including UBS’s successful acquisition of the Enron power and gas trading business. The firm's corporate lawyers draw on Covington's deep regulatory and industry expertise in areas such as life sciences and health care, telecommunications, sports and media, transportation, energy, financial institutions, intellectual property, environmental regulation, antitrust, and international trade.

Mr. Bodner has extensive experience in advising acquirors, targets, investors, boards of directors, special committees, and investment banks in domestic and cross-border negotiated, and unsolicited mergers and acquisitions transactions. He recently represented Lottomatica S.p.A. in connection with its $5.0 billion acquisition of GTECH Holdings Corporation.

Ms. Coffino has considerable experience with in and out of court restructurings, both on the debtor and creditor sides, with an emphasis on bankruptcy litigation matters. Her clients have spanned a number of industries, including energy, airline, healthcare, telecommunications, retail, manufacturing, real estate, cable, and entertainment.

Mr. Hoch, co-chair of his former firm’s restructuring and bankruptcy practice, is experienced in all aspects of reorganization practice, having represented debtors, creditors’ committees, secured and unsecured creditors, agented bank groups, individual banks, debtor in possession lenders, acquirors, and investment banks in workouts, restructurings, recapitalizations, bankruptcies, and structuring of mergers and acquisitions of distressed assets in and out of bankruptcy. He was the lead restructuring lawyer for Trenwick Group Holdings and one of the lead restructuring lawyers for PG&E Corp. in the bankruptcies of its utility Pacific Gas & Electric and its merchant energy company, NEGT.

Mr. Bodner is a graduate of New York University School of Law (J.D., 1994, Order of the Coif) and New York University (B.A., History, 1991). Ms. Coffino is a graduate of Fordham University School of Law (J.D., cum laude, 1988) and Lehman College (B.S., 1977). Mr. Hoch is a graduate of Harvard Law School (J.D., 1988) and Brooklyn College (B.S., Accounting, 1985). All three were previously partners with Dewey Ballantine LLP.

Wheeler Trigg Kennedy Names Four New Partners
The Denver-based trial law firm of Wheeler Trigg Kennedy LLP is pleased to announce the following new partners effective January 1, 2007: Michael D. Alper, Andrew C.S.. Efaw, Julie M. Walker, and Michael T. Williams.

Michael D. Alper is engaged in a practice that emphasizes the defense of insurance companies in consumer-initiated litigation, including cases brought as class actions. He also has represented and counseled clients in commercial, real estate, and other matters. A former associate at Pillsbury Winthrop, Mr. Alper has a law degree from Stanford Law School and a bachelor's degree from the University of California at Berkeley.

Andrew C.S. Efaw practices in the areas of commercial, franchise, and product liability litigation, primarily for companies in the automotive, medical device, and pharmaceutical industries. Mr. Efaw is a Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Army Reserve and has served in the Judge Advocate General's Corps as Senior Trial Counsel in Fort Lewis, Washington and Senior Defense Counsel for Northern Iraq. Mr. Efaw is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania Law School and the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York.

Julie M. Walker has assisted individuals and businesses in a wide range of industries to resolve litigation in several areas of the law, including commercial, construction, employment, intellectual property, product liability, professional liability, and securities. Ms. Walker has taught trial skills at the National Institute for Trial Advocacy and is the immediate past President of Judge William E. Doyle’s Inn of Court. Ms. Walker is a graduate of the University of Denver College of Law with a bachelor’s degree from Muhlenberg College.

Michael T. Williams focuses his practice on the litigation of class action, commercial, product liability, and professional liability disputes in federal and state courts for companies in a variety of industries. After graduating from Yale Law School where he was Senior Editor of The Yale Law Journal, Mr. Williams served as a law clerk to the Honorable Nancy Gertner of the United States District Court for the District of Massachusetts. He has a bachelor’s degree from the University of Notre Dame.

Young Conaway Teams with DuPont Company and Others for Diversity Pipeline Program
The "DuPont Legal Diversity Pipeline Project" is a collaborative effort between the DuPont Legal Department, Young Conaway Stargatt & Taylor, the non-profit Delaware Law Related Education Center, Inc., and the national non-profit Street Law, Inc.

The program provides minority high school students meaningful opportunities to interact with and get to know individuals within the legal industry and to consider careers in the legal profession. Program components include mentoring, class room activities, a career conference and internships. The Project is geared toward sophomores and juniors at Howard High School currently enrolled in the school’s legal administrative assistant curriculum.

Young Conaway project team members include William Johnston, Barry Willoughby, Donald Bowman, Jr. Mary Dugan, Monté Squire, D. Fon Muttamara-Walker, and Sanjay Bhatnagar along with several staff members.
