Attorney Thomas Johnston Named the New President of NESCom
The New England School of Communications is pleased to announce that Thomas Johnston has been elected as its 3rd president effective January 1st, 2007. The NESCom Board of Directors also elected James Goff of Veazie to serve chair and John Rohman of Bangor as vice chair of the Board of Directors

The New England School of Communications, or NESCom, celebrated its 25th Anniversary in October. It became a wholly-owned subsidiary of Husson College in 1997. Since then, its enrollments have expanded to over 300 students. NESCom offers students both the Associate of Science and the Bachelor of Science Degree program in Communications with concentrations in advertising and public relations, audio engineering, broadcast journalism, digital media, radio, sports broadcasting and video production. “We see continued growth at NESCom in its current programs as well as in expanding the school’s offerings in communications technology, live performance, video/film and print journalism. The distinction between media outlets by which information and entertainment is created and delivered is increasingly blurred and our graduates will need broader knowledge and skills to support their careers, “said Johnston.

“Thom Johnston has been a leader on the Husson College and NESCom Boards not to mention in Bangor’s performing arts community. He was the natural and the best choice for expanding NESCom us into new career areas ” said Husson president William Beardsley.

Johnston, a graduate of Middlebury College and Boston College Law School has served as a senior partner and chair of the Employment Law Practice Group of Eaton Peabody.

“Thom Johnston has practiced at Eaton Peabody for 31 years and his daily presence will be missed by both his colleagues and his clients,” said Eaton Peabody CEO Dan McKay. “We are confident that he will share his enthusiasm for education with the student body at NESCom, and we look forward to his continuing association with the firm in an of counsel capacity.”

He is a past president of the Bangor Symphony Orchestra Board and the Bangor Region Chamber of Commerce and past chair of the boards at both Husson College and The New England School of Communications. He will remain of counsel to Eaton Peabody, and will also serve as the chief human resources officer and corporate secretary for Husson College.

James Goff is the former owner of Penobscot Broadcasting Corporation that operated WHOU AM & FM and WPBC FM93. He is also the past president of the Bangor Symphony Orchestra Board of Directors. John Rohman is president of WBRC Architects-Engineers and chair of the Maine Commission on The Creative Economy.

Woodcock Washburn Secures Quantum Computer Patent for Firm Client Microsoft Corporation
Woodcock Washburn is pleased to announce the issuance today of United States Patent No. 7,109,593. The 593 patent, which is directed to “Systems And Methods For Performing Quantum Computations,” is owned by firm client Microsoft Corporation Since 2004, Woodcock Washburn partners Jonathan M. Waldman and Joseph R. Condo have architected Microsoft’s quantum computer patent portfolio. Quantum computing has been the focus of Microsoft’s Advanced Programs team led by Fields Medal recipient Michael H. Freedman.

As Waldman observed, “Rarely does any patent attorney have an opportunity to work with a scientist of the stature of Michael Freedman. It’s a quite a feeling to know that we’ve been able to help him and his team protect the significant advances they’ve been making in a field that few are even capable of entering.” Waldman earned his Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Santa Barbara, where Freedman’s team is located.

Woodcock Washburn is particularly proud to have delivered Dr. Freedman his first patent. Waldman and Condo noted, however, that the team has filed more than a half dozen patent applications [link to list of published patent applications, which itself is a list of links to the patent application publications] directed to various inventions that will ake real-world quantum computers possible.

“Until now,” Condo said, “quantum computing was the stuff of theory. Through their patents and publications, Dr. Freedman and his team have disclosed to the world how to make and use a physically-real quantum computer.” Condo, a physicist by education, is adjunct professor of patent law at Rutgers Camden – School of Law.

Added Woodcock Washburn partner Steve Rocci, “No doubt, Microsoft will once again revolutionize the computer industry because of it commitment to developing viable quantum computers.” Rocci is a member of the firm’s executive committee and adjunct professor of patent law at Drexel Law School.
