Cleary Gottlieb Counsel in Constellation of IFR Deals of the Year
Cleary Gottlieb was counsel in several of International Financing Review's 2006 Deals of the Year. The awards were announced on December 17, 2006.

Cleary Gottlieb advised CVRD in its $18 billion loan financing in connection with CVRD’s successful $17.7 billion bid for Canada’s Inco, a transaction awarded Latin American Loan of the Year. IFR praised this deal for "being the largest emerging markets loan financing ever at the time, for being put together at record speed and for transforming the borrower into a global player."

The firm’s representation of the Republic of Philippines in its dual currency bond issuance was awarded both Emerging Market Bond and Emerging Asia Bond of the Year. The $1.5 billion and €500 million bond offering was lauded by IFR for its "perfect timing, smart manipulation of market psychology, and [its] audacious decision making."

Cleary Gottlieb advised Mastercard in its $2.6 billion IPO, which was recognized by IFR as U.S. IPO of the Year. IFR commended the transaction for "overcoming structural complexities and operational hurdles."

The firm also represented Rosneft in its $10.7 billion IPO, the largest IPO ever in Russia, which was awarded the 2006 Central Eastern Europe, Middle East and Africa (CEEMEA) Equity Issue of the Year by IFR. The publication noted this transaction for "redefining the possibilities of an emerging market deal."

And as was previously reported on December 21, 2006, Cleary Gottlieb represented Iraq in its $20 billion restructuring of commercial creditor debt, which was recognized as Global and Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) Restructuring Deal of the Year. IFR praised the "speed and efficiency" with which the restructuring had been handled. At the end of the process, 96 percent of eligible creditors had received payouts and 11,776 smaller, individual Saddam-era claims, which had a total value of $19.7 billion, were cancelled.

Paul Bezilla Joins Lommen Abdo
With a resume minted in Los Angeles, veteran entertainment lawyer, Paul Bezilla, has joined the Twin Cities-based law firm of Lommen, Abdo, Cole, King & Stageberg, P.A. Bezilla's 25-plus years in the entertainment industry includes legal services for an array of high profile individuals and companies, including Frank Sinatra, Cher, Quincy Jones, Warner Bros. Records, The Walt Disney Company, PolyGram Music Publishing and K-tel Records. Bezilla's new position increases Lommen Abdo's representation in the entertainment field to seven attorneys, further establishing it as the largest entertainment law practice based in the Midwest.

Bezilla joins Lommen Abdo to work on its music, film, television, technology and other entertainment law matters. He was born in Chicago, raised in Iowa and attended the University of Iowa College of Law, after touring with a rock band throughout much of the country following college.

"I've known the firm and its practice area for more than eight years and it's very exciting to join Ken Abdo, Dan Satorius and the other lawyers as it becomes one of the leading entertainment law practices in the country, and certainly the dominant practice in the region," says Bezilla. "The challenges that creators and owners of intellectual property face in the digital era throughout the entertainment industry require skilled and experienced lawyers. It's a pleasure to join a firm whose reputation is well known in the business and highly regarded on both sides of the desk, not only in the Midwest but throughout the U.S. and other countries."

"Paul's golden resume speaks for itself," notes Ken Abdo, who, with Dan Satorius, chairs Lommen Abdo's growing entertainment department. Abdo was the former (and only Midwest) attorney to Chair the American Bar Association's Forum on Entertainment and Sports Law. He currently is the Chair of the Recording Academy's (Grammy®) Entertainment Law Initiative. "Paul is highly skilled in all areas of music transactions and hits the ground running. As Lommen Abdo's entertainment division continues to serve clients all over the world, and in new media, Paul's experiences are a great asset, not only to the firm but to its varied client list. We're elated he's joined us to help enhance our practice.

Operation Bear Hug!
A local drive to collect bears put the squeeze on bare space in Flaster/Greenberg's offices, as the Haddonfield United Methodist Church Youth Program organized the ninth annual Operation Bear Hug! The Church youth group sorted, counted and bagged new bears on Thursday, December 21 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in Flaster/Greenberg's Conference Center. On Christmas Eve, caravans of vehicles and volunteers will deliver the bears for hugs and homes in the arms of hundreds of local hospital inpatients of all ages, bringing a warm feeling and smiles to faces for many who may not get to go home for the holidays. The bears are contributed by Church members and by the members' schools and fellow employees at Commerce Bank and Flaster/Greenberg.

Operation Bear Hug! was started in 1998 by Dan Stephens, the Church's former youth director, and Lois Donaway, a Church youth advisor, who is a radiology technician for a local orthopedic physicians office. The Church's ministry to deliver bears this year extends to Virtua West Jersey Hospitals in Marlton and Voorhees and Our Lady of Lourdes Medical Center in Camden. Last year the Church's youth group delivered over 700 bears, the largest collection to date.

Undergoing renovation, the Haddonfield United Methodist Church used Flaster/Greenberg's offices to store the bears during the last month of collection. The Church, located at 29 Warwick Road in Haddonfield, is celebrating over 175 years of Christian fellowship. It supports many mission efforts in the community, county, state, nation and around the world.

Standing in back row (l. to r.) are: Frank Wisniewski, Flaster/Greenberg shareholder and member of the Church's Operation Bear Hug! team; Lois Donaway, Operation Bear Hug! Coordinator; Church youth member Michael D'Italia; Peter Jamieson, Interim Youth Director; and Emily Ruopp, sophomore at Wyoming Seminary and volunteer.
