Jenner & Block Secures Asylum for Prominent Human Rights Activist from Honduras
Jenner & Block recently obtained asylum in the United States for a pro bono client who has worked her entire adult life as an advocate on behalf of the Garifuna, the indigenous black peoples of Honduras. Ms. Gregoria Flores has been a human rights and land rights activist for the past 15 years.

The Garifuna have been the subject of widespread persecution by powerful governmental interests in Honduras who wish to seize ancestral Garifuna lands to develop resorts for the booming tourist industry. For years, Ms. Flores’s colleagues have been systematically harassed, threatened, wrongfully imprisoned, and murdered because of their advocacy on behalf of the Garifuna.

On May 30, 2005, Ms. Flores was approached by a man dressed in a security uniform at a traffic stop and shot, point blank, through the windshield of her car with an exploding bullet. The incident resulted in serious and life-threatening injuries and put in jeopardy Ms. Flores’s human rights and land rights missions in Honduras. Fearing for her life, she fled Honduras shortly after the incident in hopes of obtaining asylum in the U.S. in order to safely continue her advocacy for the Garifuna.

Jenner & Block Associate Peter H. Hanna drafted the client’s application for asylum, as well as the supporting affidavits, with support from Jenner & Block Partners Ronald M. Daignault and Gianni P. Servodidio, who served as supervisory attorneys on this pro bono matter. The application carefully accounted for her whereabouts on her return trips to Honduras and documented the worsening country conditions to support the reasonableness of her fear of persecution if she returned on a permanent basis. After a hearing before the asylum office, the client was granted asylum on December 20.

Adams and Reese Breaks Helps 100 Kids Have a Happier Holiday and
Since the inception of the LSBA’s Secret Santa program ten years ago, attorneys and staff at Adams and Reese have rallied together to provide needy children and teens with hope and happiness through holiday giving. Each year, the firm adopts more children than the year before, and this year members of the firm the adopted a record-breaking 100 children and raised more than $2,500.

“The generosity of our attorneys and staff never ceases to amaze me,” says Robert Vosbein, partner in charge of the HUGS program. “Despite the many hardships that many of our members still face post-Katrina, they still want to give, and have made this project a priority amidst their very hectic holiday season.”

This year, more than 1,200 children and teens participated in the program. Those who received the gifts are among our city’s most disadvantaged, and for many of them even the smallest gift can have a great impact. However, the holiday spirit ran rampant through the halls of the firm’s four floors in One Shell Square, and the gifts kept coming day after day and were better than ever! Members of the firm donated everything from bicycles to board games to crayons and coats.

“Hopefully the gifts we have so humbly have given will bring a bit of happiness to the children and families who receive them,” says paralegal Julie Cass who added a personal message to her gift recipient and signed it “Secret Santa.” She continues, “The opportunity to remain anonymous and selflessly share your good fortune with those who are less fortunate is the purest form of loving care.”

Adams and Reese “wrapped” up the Secret Santa project with its annual pizza/ gift wrapping party. On the last day of the toy drive, gift wrapping stations were set-up in the conference center during lunch, and attorneys and staff dropped in to help wrap remaining gifts and grab a bite to eat.

Outside of the New Orleans office, several of the firm’s other offices participate in similar holiday gift giving projects to help those in need through its corporate volunteer program, HUGS (Hope, Understanding Giving and Support). Since 1988, Adams and Reese volunteers in all offices have served countless charitable organizations and causes in the communities in which they live and work. The HUGS program was designed to foster the spirit of giving among the Adams and Reese attorneys and staff. Adams and Reese is a proud recipient of the Excellence in Corporate Volunteerism Award by the Points of Light Foundation - for many years, the only law firm nationwide so honored. The New Orleans office is also very proud to have been named “Corporate Philanthropist of the Year” for 2005 by the Greater New Orleans Association of Fundraising Professionals.
