David Schultz Appointed to MN Board of Legal Certification
The Minnesota Supreme Court has appointed David Schultz to the Minnesota Board of Legal Certification. The Minnesota State Board of Legal Certification ("Board") oversees the process by which lawyers in Minnesota are certified as specialists. The certification process gives the public information about certain attorneys who have earned the right to call themselves specialists in certain fields of law.

The Board:

* Defines the fields of law that are subject to specialty designation.
* Accredits agencies so that they can certify lawyers as specialists in a particular field of law.
* Sets standards that certifying agencies must meet when certifying lawyers as specialists.
* Reviews and evaluates the agencies' programs.
* Denies or revokes an agency's accreditation if it fails to comply with the Board's standards.

The Minnesota Supreme Court appoints the twelve members of the Board. There are nine (9) lawyer members and three (3) public members.

Fasken Martineau involved in 3 of top financing deals in 2006
A National Post article by Barry Critchley (December 27, 2006) lists the top financing deals of 2006, including deals involving First Uranium, sxr Uranium and Addax Petroleum. Fasken Martineau was counsel to all three. In the article, Barry Chritchley writes:

"In 2006, Canada emerged as the uranium financing capital of the world. Earlier this month, First Uranium-- a company that acquires, produces and develops uranium projects in South Africa -- raised $203-million via the sale of 29 million shares at $7 a share. That deal... was the biggest for the sector in 2006. SXR Uranium was also busy with two deals: $173-million from an offering of common shares and $155-million from an offering of convertible debentures."

"As for initial public offerings, a few stand out. Addax Petroleum Corp., which has operations in Africa, raised $450-million in a debut issue in February and followed up with a $401-million issue in August to help fund the acquisition of Pan-Ocean Energy.

Cooper Levenson Establishes Education Fund To Benefit Area Students
Cooper Levenson, an Atlantic City-based law firm, has announced the creation of an education fund to benefit college-bound residents in the communities that the firm serves. The scholarship was established to kick off a year-long celebration of the firm’s 50th anniversary – and in honor of the practice’s founding partner James L. Cooper, a man who dedicated his life to the law, education, civil rights and community service.

As a firm with its roots in Atlantic City, we have always felt an obligation to take an active role in the betterment of the community, said Lloyd D. Levenson, CEO. “In keeping with the example set by our founder Jim Cooper, we decided that one of the best ways to build a better community is to invest in the education of the next generation. Because of this belief, we chose to help local students – high school seniors who demonstrate civic responsibility and academic achievement – achieve their goals for a higher education.

Wiley Rein & Fielding Announces Six New Partners
Wiley Rein & Fielding is pleased to announce the election of six new Partners to the firm, effective January 1, 2007. Joining the partnership are Eric Andreas, Leslie D. Curran, Scott D. Delacourt, Eve Klindera Reed, Roderick L. Thomas and Joshua S. Turner.

Introducing the firm’s newest partners:

Eric Andreas, a former marine geologist with the United States Geological Survey, joined the firm in 2005 as a founding member of the Chemicals, Safety & Environment Practice and handles a variety of matters under a wide range of Federal environmental regulatory statutes. He is experienced in all phases of litigation and has defended environmental and hazardous materials transportation enforcement cases around the nation. Mr. Andreas also represents companies in connection with complex pesticide regulatory and data sharing disputes. He received his J.D., cum laude, from Pace University School of Law.

Leslie Curran, an associate with the firm’s Franchise Practice, counsels franchisors, licensors and manufacturers domestically and internationally on the transactional, regulatory and intellectual property issues involved in developing, expanding and maintaining franchise programs. She is an active member of the American Bar Association’s Forum on Franchising. Ms. Curran received her J.D., magna cum laude, from the University of Pittsburgh School of Law.

Scott Delacourt, formerly Deputy Bureau Chief and Chief of Staff of the Federal Communications Commission’s Wireless Telecommunications Bureau, began his legal career as an associate with WRF and, after serving at the FCC, returned to the firm as Of Counsel to the Communications Practice. He has a broad regulatory and transactional practice focusing on wireless, broadband and privacy matters. Mr. Delacourt received his J.D., cum laude, from the University of Michigan Law School.

Eve Reed, a member of the firm’s Communications Practice, represents communications and broadcast clients. She handles a wide variety of matters before federal and state courts and the Federal Communications Commission. Ms. Reed joined WRF as an associate following a clerkship for the Honorable Marvin J. Garbis of the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland. She received her J.D., with highest honors, from The George Washington University Law School.

Rod Thomas joined WRF as Of Counsel after serving for more than a decade in the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Washington, DC. A litigator in WRF’s White Collar Defense and Government Contracts Practices, he has extensive experience in federal and internal investigations and prosecutions as well as civil litigation. After receiving his J.D. from Yale Law School, Mr. Thomas clerked for the Honorable Albert J. Engel, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit.

Josh Turner began his legal career as an associate with the firm’s Communications Practice. Mr. Turner represents carriers and other parties in the telecommunications industry in proceedings before the Federal Communications Commission, as well as in federal and state court actions. He received his J.D., cum laude, from the University of Michigan Law School.

Sullivan is top deal adviser for third year in a row
SULLIVAN & CROMWELL LLP held the title as the #1 M&A law firm for the third year in a row. In 2006, S&C advised on US$ 487.9 billion in transactions, up 48 percent from 2005. Among other deals, S&C represented AT&T in its US$ 83.1 billion buyout of BellSouth, the highest-valued global deal of 2006, and S&C advised Statoil of Norway in the US$ 30.1 billion acquisition of Norsk Hydro's oil and gas business.

MANCHESTER AREA HUMAN RESOURCES ASSOCIATION ANNUAL EMPLOYMENT LAW UPDATE
The Manchester Area Human Resources Association will hold its annual update to be presented by Jim Reidy of Sheehan Phinney Bass + Green’s Labor Employment Group. For this year’s update, Jim has spoofed the popular TV game show “Deal or No Deal” and come up with an employment law update and skills quiz entitled: “EMPLOYMENT DISPUTES: DEAL OR NO DEAL.” The game takes contestants through a series of common workplace problems and complaints. Contestants have to weigh the developing facts, recognize a problem, dismiss irrelevant information and decide how and when to conclude the matter.

The event will be held from 7:30AM–10:00AM on Tuesday, January 9, 2007 at The Event Center at CR Sparks; 18 Kilton Road; Bedford, NH. NCBA'S WE CARE APPOINTS RICHARD FROMEWICK TO ITS ADVISORY BOARD
Richard G. Fromewick, chair of Meyer, Suozzi, English & Klein, P.C.'s Tax Certiorari and Condemnation practice, has been appointed to the Advisory Board of WE CARE, the charitable arm of the Nassau County Bar Association.

"I am honored to accept this position with WE CARE, an association I have long admired due to its member's tireless efforts to improve the quality of life for those in need. I am eager to participate in this program and serve the community alongside my fellow lawyers," said Fromewick. Founded in 1998, WE CARE was conceived as an avenue for attorneys in the Bar Association to help those in need and to establish, conduct and operate charitable programs seeking to enhance the well being and functioning of individuals, especially children.

In addition to the Nassau County Bar Association, Mr. Fromewick is a member of the New York County Lawyers Association, and is a member of both organizations' Committee on Tax Certiorari and Condemnation Law. He is rated "AV" by Martindale-Hubbell, the highest level of professional excellence and ethics.
