LEE APPLEBAUM ADDRESSES BUSINESS COURT JUDGES
partner at the law firm of Fineman Krekstein & Harris P.C., was recently a speaker at the second annual meeting of the American College of Business Court Judges, held at the Brookings Institute in Washington, D.C. Applebaum is a nationally recognized expert on specialized state business courts, and was invited for a second consecutive year to address these judges.

A long-time litigator, Applebaum is chair of the Philadelphia Bar Association’s Business Litigation Committee. He is also vice-chair of the Business Courts Subcommittee of the American Bar Association’s Committee on Business and Corporate Litigation, and works to support national efforts in developing business courts.

Applebaum co-authored a definitive article on business courts in The Business Lawyer, which is circulated to approximately 60,000 attorneys nationwide. He is the co-author and chapter editor of the business courts section in an annually published American Bar Association book updating national business law developments, and writes regularly on a variety of legal subjects.

Donna Ray Chmura Joins Business Attorneys At Sands Anderson Marks & Miller's RTP Office
Donna Ray Chmura has joined Sands Anderson Marks & Miller’s North Carolina office as Counsel and a member of the Business, Finance & Real Estate practice group, Managing Shareholder Paul C. Jacobson announced today.

Ms. Chmura was previously with Walker & Lambe, PLLC, in Durham where she has been engaged in business transactional work since 1999. During her time at Walker & Lambe, she represented clients in manufacturing, software, retail, restaurants, medical, dental and veterinary practices, as well as contractors/builders, real estate and mortgage brokers and accountants.

Sands Anderson Marks & Miller’s North Carolina office is located in the Research Triangle Park. Its clients include local governments, insurance companies, small and privately owned businesses and individuals.

Ms. Chmura’s legal experience has ranged from negotiating and drafting commercial transaction agreements (including real estate, financing, mergers, asset and stock purchases and sales) to serving as general counsel to a number of corporations and limited liability companies. She has counseled clients on risk management and asset protection strategies and worked with clients on business succession planning, in conjunction with estate planning attorneys, including structuring shareholder and partnership agreements and complex operating agreements. She has formed many corporations and LLCs, including professional organizations. Additionally, she has been involved with state and federal trademark prosecution.

She started her legal career at Womble, Carlyle, Sandridge & Rice, PLLC, where her practice focused on technology law and protection of intellectual property including licensing and corporate transactions.

Ms. Chmura received her B.S. in Journalism from The Medill School of Journalism of Northwestern University and for the two years following, she was a reporter and business reporter for the Rock Hill (SC) Herald. She received her J.D. degree, with honors, from The George Washington University School of Law where she was a member of the Giles S. Rich Inn of Court.

She is deeply involved in community activities including serving as secretary to the Board of Directors for the Jewish Heritage Foundation of North Carolina and is a parent volunteer with the Montessori Community School in Durham. Donna is a native of Greensboro and she, her husband, Brian, and their four-year old daughter, Molly, reside in Durham.

Prominent Local Attorney Joins Lisle Office of Hinshaw & Culbertson LLP
Stephen A. Frost has joined the Lisle office of Hinshaw & Culbertson LLP. Mr. Frost will utilize his extensive business, tax planning and estate planning expertise to lead Hinshaw’s expanding business practice in the western suburbs.

“We are very pleased that Steve will be joining our team here in Lisle. As the head of our growing business practice, his vast experience will facilitate our expansion in this area,” said Daniel M. Purdom, partner-in-charge of Hinshaw’s Lisle office.

Mr. Frost has more than 25 years of experience advising clients on issues relating to their businesses. Utilizing various tax saving techniques, Mr. Frost has also designed and implemented estate planning strategies and transition strategies for business owners and high-net-wealth individuals.

As a member of the firm’s business transactions practice, Mr. Frost will also advise taxpayers on matters relating to federal and state income taxes. His counsel is regularly sought by entrepreneurs and investors who wish to achieve an appropriate business structure that meets their tax and non-tax objectives.

Mr. Frost is a member of the Chicago Bar Association, the American Bar Association and the Chicago Estate Planning Council. He is also an active member of the Naperville community, having served as President of the Naperville Area Chamber of Commerce, Chair of the Naperville Transportation Advisory Board, and on the boards of several local charitable organizations.

Fried Frank represents BellSouth Corporation in $85 billion merger with AT&T Inc.
Fried Frank represented BellSouth Corporation in its merger with AT&T Inc., a deal estimated to be worth $85 billion with a market capitalization approaching $170 billion. The deal, approved by federal regulators yesterday, was the largest of 2006, and will create the largest telecommunications company in the world.

The Fried Frank team was led by corporate partners Arthur Fleischer Jr., Peter S. Golden and Philip Richter and included corporate partner Warren de Wied, tax partner Alan Kaden (DC), intellectual property and technology partner Henry Lebowitz, executive compensation and employee benefits partner Jonathan F. Lewis, and litigation partner Richard M. Schwartz.

R&C LandLaw Partner Presented the Public Affairs Award by the National Association of Industrial and Office Properties
For the second year in a row, Brian Blaesser, a partner in Robinson & Cole's Land Use Group, was presented the Public Affairs Award by the National Association of Industrial and Office Properties (NAIOP). The 2006 award to Mr. Blaesser was for his role, along with others, in helping to draft and achieve passage of House Bill 4968, An Act Relative to Streamlining and Expediting the Permitting Process in the Commonwealth, which significantly reformed the permitting process in Massachusetts and addressed the issue of frivolous appeals. Finnegan Henderson Scores Big Win for Client Eli Lilly
This month, the Federal Circuit, in an opinion written by Judge Rader, affirmed the judgment of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Indiana upholding Lilly's patent covering Zyprexa® (olanzapine), a breakthrough medicine for the treatment of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. The patent had been challenged by three generic drug manufacturers. This year, Zyprexa's sales were more than $4 billion—nearly one third of Lilly's total revenue.
