Appellate Court affirms defense verdict in favor of Marconi law firm client in legal malpractice suit
In a victory for Johnson & Bell Attorney Joseph R. Marconi’s, left, law firm client, the First District Appellate Court of Illinois recently affirmed a defense jury verdict that the law firm of Holleb & Coff, and one of its partners, did not commit legal malpractice in their representation of a client during her sale of an Internet business.

The plaintiff sued the law firm and individual lawyer claiming that the defendants were negligent in representing her company in the sale of its interest in another company and that as a result she was damaged and lost substantial money. The case proceeded to a jury trial where plaintiff sought $590,000 in damages. At the conclusion of the trial, the jury rendered a verdict in favor of the defendants. On appeal, the plaintiff contended that the trial court committed prejudicial error in instructing the jury, and that the jury verdict was against the manifest weight of the evidence. In a 15-page order, the Appellate Court rejected the plaintiff’s contentions and affirmed the jury verdict.

Marconi was assisted in the trial by Johnson & Bell Attorney Victor J. Pioli, above right. Marconi is chairman and Pioli a member of Johnson & Bell's Business & Litigation Practice Group. Pioli and Johnson & Bell Attorney David M. Macksey, above center, assisted Marconi in the appeal of the case. Macksey is chairman of Johnson & Bell's Appellate Practice Group.
