Weinberg, Wheeler, Hudgins, Gunn & Dial, LLC Promotes Five to Partnership
Weinberg, Wheeler, Hudgins, Gunn & Dial, LLC, promoted five attorneys to partnership: Christopher T. Byrd, Charles L. "Chuck" Clay, Jr., John M. “Jack” Hawkins, Peter K. Spillis and Scott A. Witzigreuter. Mr. Spillis joined the firm’s Miami office, while the remaining four are in Atlanta. Managing Partner John M. “Skip” Hudgins, IV, remarked, “We are extremely pleased to welcome these talented lawyers to the partnership. Their proven professional skills, especially in the courtroom, will continue to be an asset to the firm and its clients.” Following is biographical information on each:

Chris Byrd represents clients in both state and federal courts in claims of wrongful death, product liability, premises liability, breach of contract, mass and complex torts, medical malpractice and construction law. Mr. Byrd has represented clients in more than 10 states throughout the country. He earned a B.S. from the University of Georgia in 1994, and received his J.D., cum laude, from Drake University Law School in 1998. Mr. Byrd is admitted to practice in Georgia and Nevada.

Chuck Clay focuses on civil litigation matters primarily in the areas of catastrophic injury, product liability, premises liability and professional negligence. Mr. Clay has tried and resolved cases involving serious injury, including wrongful death and permanent brain injury, in Alabama, California, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Illinois, Louisiana, Montana, New Mexico, South Carolina and Wyoming. In 1996, he graduated cum laude with a B.A. from Furman University then earned his J.D., cum laude, from the University of Georgia School of Law in 1999. Mr. Clay is admitted in Georgia.

Jack Hawkins defends hospitals, builders, automobile dealerships and other entities in matters involving professional liability, construction, general liability and commercial litigation in courts and arbitration tribunals. He is a 1995 graduate of Furman University, having earned his B.A. cum laude. He received his J.D. from Georgia State University College of Law in 1998. Mr. Hawkins is admitted in Georgia.

Pete Spillis concentrates his civil trial practice on medical malpractice, premises and vehicular liability, product liability and pharmaceuticals. He has tried dozens of cases to verdict, with a particular emphasis on complex medical issues. Mr. Spillis also represents health care professionals before the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation, as well as the Florida Board of Medicine. He receivef his B.A. from Texas Christian University in 1988, and his J.D. from The University of Miami in 1991. Mr. Spillis is admitted in Florida.

Tyler Cooper Names Six New Partners to the Firm
The law firm of Tyler Cooper announced today that it has named six new partners. The partners are Elizabeth K. Acee, Elena L. Cahill, Ilan Markus and Kerry J. Tomasevich, who are resident in the firm's New Haven office, and James R. Byrne and Carol L. Loomis, who are resident in the firm's Hartford office.

Ms. Acee focuses her practice on commercial litigation and labor and employment law. She has distinguished herself through leadership positions in legal professional associations on the state and national levels. She is Secretary-Treasurer of the American Bar Association's Young Lawyers Division and will lead that organization as Chair in 2008. She also serves as Assistant Secretary-Treasurer of the Connecticut Bar Association and is the immediate past Chair of the association's Young Lawyers Section.

Ms. Cahill concentrates her practice in the area of business development and growth. She has had more than 15 years of corporate reorganization and real estate experience. In addition to handling residential and commercial real estate transactions, she has assisted in the formation and expansion of businesses in a number of industries, including retail, manufacturing, boating, travel, and health and wellness. She is a recipient of the American Jurisprudence Award.

Mr. Markus focuses his practice in the areas of commercial litigation and bankruptcy matters. His portfolio of commercial clients includes biomedical companies, retail landlords and tenants, as well as entertainment, printing, and web design and hosting businesses. In the bankruptcy area, he has handled Chapter 11 and other cases in several jurisdictions, including Connecticut, New York, Delaware and Florida.

Mr. Tomasevich is a corporate and securities lawyer. His areas of concentration include mergers and acquisitions, public and private offerings, and general corporate law. He has represented purchasers and sellers in various stock and asset transactions, counseled start-up companies and venture capital partnerships in venture financing transactions, and advised financial institutions in commercial lending transactions. Mr. Tomasevich is a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and served on active duty in the U.S. Army as a helicopter pilot and air cavalry troop commander.

Mr. Byrne's practice focuses on commercial litigation, creditors' rights, commercial foreclosures and collections, workouts, check fraud and negotiable instrument litigation, bankruptcy and tax appeals. He frequently represents financial institutions in court actions and administrative proceedings, and regularly advises the firm's clients on executions, garnishments, levies, subpoenas and other types of service of process issues. In addition to practicing in Connecticut and Massachusetts, Mr. Byrne is admitted to the bar of the U.S. Supreme Court.

Ms. Loomis practices in the fields of general corporate law and commercial real estate. She is counsel to a broad client base, ranging from small, closely held businesses to large, publicly traded international companies. She provides a wide range of legal counseling and commercial transaction services, including mergers and acquisitions, divestitures, financings, as well as purchases, sales and leases of real property.

Stone Pigman Walther Wittmann L.L.C. Merges with McKay, Lutgring & Cochran L.L.C.
Responding to growing business opportunities along the I-10 and I-12 corridors, Stone Pigman Walther Wittmann L.L.C. has acquired the McKay, Lutgring and Cochran law firm in Baton Rouge, La., effective Jan. 1, 2007.

Michael W. McKay, Michael D. Lutgring and Douglas J. Cochran, previously partners at McKay, Lutgring and Cochran in Baton Rouge, will join Stone Pigman's Baton Rouge office as new partners practicing in the areas of corporate litigation and commercial law, including transactions, mergers and acquisitions.

“We've been representing clients in Baton Rouge for 30 years. Having these lawyers join us elevates our commitment to Baton Rouge and our clients there. The growing economy of Baton Rouge and the improving business climate in New Orleans creates a need for a presence in both markets. These three new well-respected lawyers will help us serve all of our clients better," said Phil Wittmann, managing partner at Stone Pigman.

“The similarities between the business communities of Baton Rouge and New Orleans are greater today than ever before. The ‘distance’ between New Orleans and Baton Rouge is growing shorter by the day. Stone Pigman will move its Baton Rouge office from the State National Life Building to the McKay, Lutgring and Cochran office at 2431 South Acadian Thruway, Suite 290, effective January 1, 2007.

PARTNERS:
Michael W. McKay, a past president of both the Louisiana State Bar Association and the Baton Rouge Bar Association, focuses his practice on civil trials, appeals, mass torts, class action defense, insurance defense, and mediation. He received his B.A. and J.D. from Louisiana State University.

Michael D. Lutgring practices in the areas of commercial transactions, mergers and acquisitions, employment law and health care regulation. He serves on the Capital Area Legal Services Corporation board of directors and is active in several civic organizations in the Baton Rouge area. Mr. Lutgring received his B.A. from Southeastern Louisiana College and his J.D. from the Paul M. Hebert Law Center at Louisiana State University.

Douglas J. Cochran has an active trial practice handling insurance defense, medical malpractice defense and workers' compensation defense. He is on the board of directors for the Baton Rouge YMCA and is active in many community organizations in Baton Rouge. Mr. Cochran received his B.S. and J.D. from Louisiana State University.

Shipman & Goodwin Appoints Chief Financial Officer
Shipman & Goodwin, one of Connecticut’s largest law firms, has appointed Thomas Purcell as Chief Financial Officer. Purcell previously served as the firm’s Director of Finance.

In his new capacity, Purcell will direct and oversee all financial activities of the firm including preparation of current financial reports as well as summaries and forecasts for future business growth and general economic outlook.

"This announcement is an acknowledgement of the strategic financial planning Tom is currently doing on behalf of the firm," said Alan Jones, Executive Director.

Prior to Shipman & Goodwin, Purcell served as Office Administrator at Schnader Harrison Goldstein & Manello. There, he managed the Accounting, Human Resources, Information Systems and Office Services departments for the firm’s 50-lawyer Boston office.

Purcell is a graduate of Clarkson University (B.S, cum laude) and the University of Connecticut (MBA, cum laude). He also holds a Certified Public Accountant license.

Shipman & Goodwin Names Gabriel J. Jiran as Partner
Shipman & Goodwin has named Labor and Employment attorney Gabriel J. Jiran as a partner of the firm. This announcement serves to strengthen an already solid practice as Shipman & Goodwin has a national reputation in labor relations and employment law, representing management.

Mr. Jiran practices both traditional labor law and employment litigation on behalf of corporations and public employers. He has experience in all aspects of labor relations including negotiating collective bargaining agreements, counseling employers on labor relations issues, and representing employers before administrative agencies and courts in labor disputes.

In addition to his labor practice, Mr. Jiran represents employers in state and federal courts on a variety of employment litigation issues, including claims of age, disability, race, national origin, and gender discrimination. He also litigates claims of sexual harassment and workers' compensation retaliation.

Mr. Jiran previously served as an Assistant Attorney General for the State of Ohio where he litigated labor and employment cases on behalf of the State. He also served as the Chief Legal Counsel for the Ohio Office of Collective Bargaining where he negotiated labor agreements and participated in mediations and arbitrations on behalf of the State of Ohio.

Mr. Jiran is admitted to practice in Connecticut, Colorado and Ohio. He is a member of the American, Connecticut (Executive Committee, Labor and Employment Law Section) and Hartford County Bar Associations. He is also a member of the International Personnel Management Association, the Connecticut Public Employer Labor Relations Association, the Labor Employment Relations Association, and the Lawyers' Collaborative for Diversity, as well as the firm’s own Diversity Committee.

Mr. Jiran graduated from Miami University (B.S.) and University of Cincinnati College of Law (J.D., with honors).

K&L Gates Ranked as a Top Law Firm for Women by Harvard Law School Women’s Law Association Survey
The Washington, Pittsburgh and Seattle offices of recently combined Kirkpatrick & Lockhart Nicholson Graham LLP and Preston Gates & Ellis have been ranked number one by a Harvard Law School Women's Law Association survey for the firms’ positive treatment of its women lawyers. Preston Gates also ranked number 10 and K&LNG number 13 out 105 firms of nationally. The two firms combined on January 1, 2007 to become K&L Gates.

The survey, “Presumed Equal: What America's Top Women Lawyers Really Think About Their Firms,” considers the anonymous responses of nearly 4,000 female lawyers to questions about their firms’ provisions for training, business development, leadership and advancement; the existence of female-friendly workplaces and attitudes; and the approach to work-life balance, mentoring and diversity.
