Nelson Mullins Elects Seven New Columbia Partners
Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough LLP has elected seven new partners in its Columbia office: Glen Caulk, Brian Comer, Debbie Durban, Tom Kennaday, Cory Manning, Kay Tennyson, and Thad Westbrook.

Attorney Glen Caulk Glen Caulk practices in the areas of real estate, banking, municipal finance, and corporate law. A member of the South Carolina Bar, Mr. Caulk has experience in all aspects of the creation and enforcement of horizontal property regimes. He has performed quiet title actions, been involved in negotiations involving tax credit based transactions, and transactions involving fee in lieu of tax, like-kind exchanges, sale-lease back, synthetic leases, wrap mortgages, and mezzanine financing. Mr. Caulk is a member of the American Bar Association, the Richland County Bar Association and the South Carolina Defense Trial Attorneys' Association. He is also a director of the Palmetto Land Title Association. Prior to joining Nelson Mullins, he practiced with another South Carolina firm. In 1994, Mr. Caulk earned a Juris Doctor from the University of South Carolina School of Law. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Finance from the University of South Carolina in 1989.

Attorney Brian ComerBrian Comer of the Firm's Litigation Group practices in general products liability, business, pharmaceutical and securities litigation. Mr. Comer also has past experience in general corporate transactions and economic development work. Along with other Nelson Mullins attorneys, Mr. Comer serves as national coordinating counsel in pharmaceutical mass tort litigation spanning the United States. He also frequently serves as local counsel for pharmaceutical and medical device manufacturers facing litigation in South Carolina. Mr. Comer has also served as local counsel for financial institutions facing securities and broker/dealer litigation in the South Carolina and the southeast. He also has experience with products liability issues arising with various types of machinery, including farm and factory equipment. Mr. Comer has successfully obtained defense verdicts for medical device companies and for financial institutions in broker/dealer arbitrations. He has also successfully negotiated settlements in all areas of his practice. In 1999, Mr. Comer earned a Juris Doctor from the University of South Carolina School of Law and a Master of International Business Studies from the university’s Darla Moore School of Business.

Attorney Debbie DurbanDebbie Whittle Durban practices in the field of labor and employment, including employment discrimination, FMLA, wage and hour issues, and employment contracts. A member of the South Carolina Bar, Ms. Durban is admitted to practice before the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals and the U.S. District Court for the District of South Carolina. Ms. Durban is a member of the American Bar Association, the Richland County Bar Association, the South Carolina Defense Trial Attorneys' Association, and the South Carolina Women Lawyers Association. Ms. Durban earned a Juris Doctor, cum laude, from the University of South Carolina School of Law in 1999, where she was inducted into The Order of the Coif. Attorney Cory ManningCory Manning practices in the areas of business litigation, securities litigation, and professional liability. His experience covers several areas, including securities law, officer and director liability, commercial contracts, complex commercial litigation, and class actions. Prior to joining Nelson Mullins, Mr. Manning worked for a leading law firm in Palo Alto, Calif. He also served as a judicial clerk for the Honorable Robert M. Parker of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit. Mr. Manning earned his Juris Doctor from the University of Iowa College of Law, with distinction, in 1997. While in law school, he served as articles editor and book review editor for the Iowa Law Review. He attended the University of Northern Iowa and earned a Bachelor of Arts, magna cum laude, in political science in 1993.

Attorney Thomas KennadayThomas Kennaday practices in the areas of product liability and business litigation. A member of the South Carolina Bar, Mr. Kennaday is admitted to practice before the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals and the U.S. District Court for the District of South Carolina. Mr. Kennaday is a member of the American Bar Association, the Defense Research Institute, and the South Carolina Defense Trial Attorneys' Association. Attorney Thad WestbrookThad Westbrook practices in the areas of business litigation, consumer finance litigation, and class action defense. He is a member of the Firm’s Associates Committee and a former member of its Recruiting Committee. In February 2006, Mr. Westbrook received the Firm’s Edward W. Mullins Excellence in Marketing Award. Prior to joining the Firm, Mr. Westbrook was a law clerk for U.S. District Judge G. Ross Anderson, Jr. of South Carolina. Mr. Westbrook has experience in handling litigation matters in federal and state courts, and multiple arbitral forums. Mr. Westbrook has handled a variety of business litigation disputes involving financial institutions, insurance, class actions and other commercial law issues. In the American Bar Association's Young Lawyers Division, Mr. Westbrook has served as chair of its Business Law Committee. In the South Carolina Bar, Mr. Westbrook has served as chair of its Law Related Education Committee. Mr. Westbrook is also a member of the John Belton O’Neall Inn of Court. Miller Nash Attorney to Chair Oregon State Bar Section
Craig Armstrong, a partner of Miller Nash LLP, was recently appointed as chair of the Oregon State Bar Labor and Employment Law Section, effective as of Jan. 1, 2007. A labor attorney with the multispecialty firm, Armstrong was most recently chair-elect of the bar section.

Each year, the section’s nominating committee selects officers based on their contributions and involvement with the section. Since becoming a member, Armstrong has been very active with the organization, previously serving as treasurer in 2005; as secretary in 2004; and as an executive committee member in 2003 and 2002.

Chair duties will include presiding over the section executive committee, which plans and implements continuing legal education and other programs to benefit section members and oversees section business operations.

Milbank Partner Recognized By The American Lawyer
The American Lawyer has designated Sean M. Murphy, a partner at the international law firm Milbank, Tweed, Hadley & McCloy LLP, as a Fab Fifty Young Litigator, an elite group of litigators whom the The American Lawyer recognizes as the top fifty litigators in the United States under age 45. Mr. Murphy, age 37, is a securities litigator in the New York office of Milbank.

Mr. Murphy represents major mutual fund and financial service companies, including AllianceBernstein, Fidelity, Capital Research & Management Company, American Century Companies, and Citigroup. During the past two years, he won twelve complex securities matters with billions of dollars at stake for his clients. Mr. Murphy’s most recent major victories include:

Co-led, with Jim Benedict, the defense of American Century Investment Management, Inc. in one of the largest mutual fund excessive fee securities actions ever filed (Baker v. American Century Investment Management, Inc.) The plaintiffs voluntarily dropped their billion dollar case on the eve of the trial.

In one of the top defense wins of 2005, Mr. Murphy was one of the lead defense attorneys representing Alliance Capital in a state court action brought by the Florida State Board of Administration, the third largest public pension fund in the United States, seeking over $3 billion in damages. After a seven week jury trial, the jury dismissed all of the claims against Alliance Capital and awarded Alliance $1.2 million in unpaid advisory fees.

Focusing on complex securities and antitrust matters, Mr. Murphy defends companies in high-stakes class action and derivative litigation, often involving regulatory investigations by federal or state agencies.

In antitrust matters, he has defended major cases involving conspiracy and monopolization allegations, illegal exchanges of information, deal structuring and vertical relationships. He has represented clients such as DuPont, Hearst Corporation, Nine West, Shell Oil and Tyco International, on antitrust matters.

In addition to being named a leading securities lawyer by The American Lawyer, Mr. Murphy has been recognized as a leading securities litigator by Chambers USA and was recently selected as one of Lawdragon’s “500 New Stars.

McLane Names Samuels Chair of Firm's Management Committee
The law firm of McLane, Graf, Raulerson & Middleton, Professional Association is proud to announce that Dick Samuels has been elected Chair of the firm’s Management Committee.

Mr. Samuels joined the firm in 1980 and has been a shareholder and director since 1987. He is the former chair of the firm’s Corporate Department and concentrates his practice in corporate governance, corporate transactions, (“M&A”), and securities regulation, including public company SEC representation, private securities offerings, formation of investment funds and investment adviser representation. He has been named among the best in this field in the legal profession’s definitive service guide, The Best Lawyers in America, in the areas of Corporate, M&A Law, Financial Institutions Law and Energy Law in each of the last ten years. Dick is also named as a Leader in Corporate/M&A work in Chambers USA: America's Leading Business Lawyers.

He has chaired the Corporation, Banking and Business Law Section of the New Hampshire Bar Association and the Bar Association's Continuing Legal Education Committee. He is one of the authors of New Hampshire's Business Corporation Act and New Hampshire's Limited Liability Company Act. He is also the New Hampshire liaison to the American Bar Associations Business Law Section's Committee on State Regulation of Securities.

Dick is chairman of the Board of Directors of the Manchester Community Health Center. He serves on the Board of Trustees of the New Hampshire Institute of Art. He is a past Trustee and Chairman of the Greater Manchester YMCA, and he continues to serve on various YMCA committees and provides legal counsel to the YMCA. He also has served as chairman of the New Hampshire Bar Pro Bono Referral System Governing Board.

He received a Bachelor of Arts degree, cum laude from Union College, a Master of Arts degree from Duke University in 1976, and J.D., cum laude from Cornell University in 1980 where he served as an editor of the Cornell International Law Journal.

Dick lives in Concord with his wife Anne Marie.

McLane Welcomes Two New Directors and Shareholders
McLane, Graf, Raulerson & Middleton, Professional Association is pleased to announce that Sarah B. Knowlton and Patrick C. Closson have been voted directors and shareholders of the firm.

Sarah and Patrick both practice in the firm’s Corporate Department. Also serving as co-chair of the firm’s Health Care practice, Sarah represents health care providers and a variety of other corporate clients, including regulated utilities. Patrick concentrates his practice in the areas of mergers and acquisitions, entity formation, private security offerings, employee stock option plans and general corporate governance and contract matters.

Sarah serves as Chair of the Telecommunications, Energy and Utilities Section of the New Hampshire Bar Association. She is also a member of the American Health Lawyers Association, the American Bar Association’s Public Utility, Communications & Transportation Section, and the New Hampshire Women's Bar Association.

Sarah was voted one of the Best Lawyers in America 2006 and 2007 in the area of energy law. She is a member of the University of Pennsylvania Secondary Schools Committee (1998 - present) and served on the Board of the Women's Fund of New Hampshire from 1998 to 2005. She is on the Advisory Board of Families First of the Greater Seacoast, after serving for six years on its Board of Directors.

Sarah received her Bachelor of Arts degree, summa cum laude in 1986 from the University of Pennsylvania. She then went on to pursue her Masters in Social Work, graduating in 1987. She received her J.D. from Emory University School of Law in 1992. Upon graduation, she worked in the Office of the General Counsel for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, Georgia for five years.

Sarah currently teaches Health Care Law for New England College in the School of Graduate and Professional Studies. She is admitted to practice in New Hampshire and Georgia.

Patrick is a member of the New Hampshire Bar Association and the American Bar Association, a member of the Business Law sections of both.

He serves on the Board of City Year New Hampshire, having served as vice chair in the past. Patrick serves on the Boston College Law School Alumni Council; the New Hampshire Bar Association Professionalism Committee; and the Greater Portsmouth Chamber of Commerce Business Development Committee. Patrick also served on the New Hampshire Bar Association Leadership Conference Steering Committee; the New Hampshire Bar Association Communications Task Force; and the Child and Family Services Seacoast’s Board of Directors. He was awarded the Boston College Alumni Award in 2005.

Patrick received his Bachelor of Arts in History, graduating summa cum laude from the University of New Hampshire in 1995, and his J.D. from Boston College Law School in 1998. He is admitted to practice in the state of New Hampshire.

BTI Consulting Names Sidley Partners Scott Bass, Eric Haueter, Paul Kalb and Irv Rotter to 2007 Client Service All-Star Team
Sidley Austin LLP partners I. Scott Bass (Washington, D.C.), Eric S. Haueter (San Francisco), Paul E. Kalb, M.D. (Washington, D.C.) and Irving L. Rotter (New York) have been named to the BTI Consulting 2007 Client Service All-Star Team. The annual BTI ranking, based on interviews with more than 250 corporate counsel at Fortune 1000 and other companies, recognizes 113 individual lawyers from 93 law firms who deliver “the absolute best client service.”

In addition, Scott Bass and Paul Kalb were two of only five lawyers nominated by more than one client, earning the recognition of “MVP – Truly Outstanding.” Paul Kalb was also recognized as one of five lawyers included in the All-Star Team ranking for the third consecutive year. Sidley is one of only two law firms that boast four BTI Client Service All-Star nominees in 2007.

I. Scott Bass (Washington, D.C.) heads the firm’s Global Life Sciences Practice. Eric S. Haueter (San Francisco) is a Corporate partner whose principal areas of practice include corporate finance and mergers & acquisitions. Mr. Haueter has represented underwriters and issuers in a broad range of public and private debt and equity financings, merger and acquisition transactions and other corporate matters.

Paul E. Kalb, M.D. (Washington, D.C.) heads the firm's national Health Care Practice. He principally represents drug manufacturers and institutional health care providers in criminal, civil and administrative enforcement actions and related civil litigation involving health care fraud and abuse.

Irving L. Rotter (New York) is a partner in the firm’s Corporate and Project Finance Practices. He represents buyers and sellers in mergers and acquisitions; developers, lenders and equity participants in project finance transactions; and lenders and financial institutions in banking and corporate finance transactions.

Tamara Schiffner Pullin Named Litigation Associate
Tamara Schiffner Pullin, an attorney with five years experience handling complex commercial litigation cases, has joined McAfee & Taft as an associate whose practice is concentrated on labor and employment and general commercial litigation in both state and federal courts. In addition to representing both plaintiffs and defendants in civil litigation matters, she also represents employers in cases involving wrongful discharge claims, employment agreements, wage and hour disputes, and other issues arising out of employer/employee relationships.

Prior to joining McAfee & Taft, Pullin worked as a litigation associate with the Dallas, TX, office of Gardere Wynne Sewell LLP for three years and with the Houston, TX, office of Fulbright & Jaworski, LLP for two years. While practicing in Texas, she was twice named a “Texas Rising Star" by Law and Politics magazine. The honor, which is based on nominations by members of the elite Texas Super Lawyers list, recognizes the state's top up-and-coming young attorneys.

The New Boston, TX, native graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Oklahoma in 1997 and went on to earn her Juris Doctor, with honors, from the University of Oklahoma College of Law in 2001. While in law school, she served as editor-in-chief of Oklahoma Law Review and was named to the Order of the Coif.
