Inadmissible Legal Business
Finnegan Henderson scored a major victory for its client Eli Lilly & Company last week, when a federal appeals court upheld the company’s patent on Zyprexa, a leading schizophrenia drug and the company’s top seller. Lilly sued generic drug manufacturers Teva Pharmaceuticals Industries Ltd. and Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories after they filed for approvals to make generic versions of the drug, even though Zyprexa’s patent doesn’t expire until 2011. Foley Strengthens Business Law Department With Addition of Craig Wood in Los Angeles
Foley & Lardner LLP announced today that Craig P. Wood has joined its Los Angeles office as a partner in the Business Law Department and a member of the firm's Real Estate Practice. Wood focuses his practice on managing complex Tenant-In-Common (TIC) offerings, along with general real estate transactions throughout the United States. In addition to his TIC practice, he works with large institutional clients on developing private equity funding for real estate investment, as well as with pension funds and pension fund advisors. “The addition of Craig is the latest step in our strategic plan to expand our Los Angeles corporate practice, as well as to increase our service offerings to clients nationwide,” said Los Angeles Office Managing Partner Jack Lasater. “His depth of experience in the real estate industry, particularly in the TIC arena, complements our strengths on the West Coast as well as nationally.”

“Craig's addition strengthens our ability to provide counsel to TIC sponsors nationally, particularly in the critical region of Southern California,” said Stephen Burr, a Boston partner who leads Foley's TIC practice. “He also brings significant expertise in real estate capital markets transactions generally, which has become increasingly important as the TIC industry expands its search for equity into larger, more institutional channels.”

Wood joins Foley from Greenberg Glusker and prior to that practiced law in San Francisco for more than 20 years.

Wood's practice encompasses joint ventures for the joint ownership and operation of real estate nationally. Additionally, Wood works with institutions, institutional investors and developers in more traditional aspects of real estate law including real property acquisitions and dispositions, leasing, finance and the various aspects of the development cycle.

Wood earned his juris doctorate from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law, a master's degree from Northwestern University and a bachelor's degree from the University of California, Berkeley.

Foley Adds Federal Prosecutor to Litigation Department in Los Angeles
Foley & Lardner LLP announced today that Jaime Guerrero has joined its Los Angeles office as senior counsel and a member of the Litigation Department and the White Collar Defense and Corporate Compliance Practice.

Guerrero joins Foley after working as an Assistant United States Attorney (AUSA) for the U.S. Attorney's Office in Los Angeles, where he served as lead counsel for a number of criminal jury trials in federal district court. Before attending law school, Guerrero worked as an auditor for one of the big four accounting firms.

“Jaime's experience prosecuting cases at the federal level and working as an auditor will prove to be a great resource to our clients seeking counsel on white collar criminal litigation,” said Jon Wilson, chair of the firm's Litigation Department. “His background leading criminal trials and directing investigations as a federal prosecutor, as well as his prior experience working as an auditor and handling antitrust and securities matters, will further enhance our ability to serve our clients on both local and national levels.”

Guerrero expands the firm's White Collar Defense and Corporate Compliance Practice in Los Angeles where Pamela L. Johnston represents companies and individuals in criminal and civil investigations. Johnston joined Foley in 2005 after serving for years as a deputy chief of the U.S. Attorney's Office Major Frauds Section where she supervised government investigations of securities and other types of fraud cases.

As an AUSA, Guerrero litigated numerous criminal cases and handled all aspects of multiple appeals before the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. He conducted investigations using a variety of tools, including grand jury subpoenas of financial institutions and review of suspected fraudulent financial transactions, and prepared search warrants, criminal complaints and indictments.

Previously, Guerrero was a litigation associate at another law firm, where he litigated complex civil actions in federal and state courts. He represented an energy company in several antitrust actions in federal and state courts related to the California energy crisis and successfully handled a securities fraud lawsuit on behalf of a corporation against its former chief executive officer.
