Dewey Ballantine and Orrick End Merger Discussions
Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe LLP and Dewey Ballantine LLP have jointly decided to end merger discussions. Both firms are successful, global firms that saw great potential in a combination. However, a combination of this size and scope posed significant challenges. While both firms tried
their best to work through these challenges, we were unable to bring the merger to completion. No one issue led us to this point, and each firm leaves this process with great respect for the leaders and partners of the other.

Riddell elected president of Minority Bar Association
Sakina Riddell, an associate at Phillips Lytle LLP, was elected president of the Minority Bar Association of Western New York at the organization’s annual meeting last month.

Riddell, who was the association’s corresponding secretary and chairperson of its annual dinner committee for 2006, began her one-year term Jan. 1. She succeeds Betty Calvo-Torres, of counsel to Cantor Lukasik Dolce & Panepinto PC.

At 31, Riddell can use her youth to advantage. From building the association’s 100-person membership to increasing awareness of diversity across the legal field, Riddell has several initiatives in mind.

"We’d like to get younger attorneys interested and invigorated while not forgetting the importance of maintaining ties with older members, who are an anchor for us to remember how far we’ve come," said Riddell, who practices in the area of commercial real estate and lending/finance transactions.

However, minorities continue to struggle to be proportionately represented in the legal field.

The association’s mission is to improve the status of minorities in the legal profession, insure the rights of all people and enhance legal services available to minorities in the Buffalo area.

"The Minority Bar Association has a role to play in terms of promoting diversity in the court system, in corporate legal departments and in law firms, to increase awareness of the need to promote diversity," Riddell said. The problem exists, she said, "nationwide and here in Western New York."

"We’re not necessarily different from any other legal community, but it’s something that is an area that we’d like to work on making strides."

Other initiatives Riddell has planned include:

• Obtaining CLE approval — The association, which now co-sponsors continuing legal education seminars with other organizations, is seeking approval to provide CLEs of its own.

While the seminars may focus on diversity themes, the association plans to host a wide range of programs for both members and nonmembers.

"We’ll focus on ethics credits, which are usually harder to obtain and come by," Riddell said.

• Continuing a relationship with UB Law — Riddell said the association’s relationship with the University at Buffalo Law School will be expanded through a mentoring program with the school’s Students of Color organization.

"It gives minority law students the ability to interact one on one and to learn from practicing minority attorneys, (who will) share struggles and successes and to provide them with added support," she said.

• Working with the New York State Bar Association — Riddell plans to work with former Minority Bar Association President David Edmunds, who was recently named to the state bar’s Special Committee on the Civil Rights Agenda.

"We’d like to try to develop some type of diversity forum or panel or conference here in Western New York that can bring different sectors in the legal community together to discuss issues of diversity and inclusion in different sectors," Riddell said. "You think you’ve come a long way, but it’s still a struggle, and there’s still a lot more advances we need to achieve."

A 2000 graduate of Georgetown University Law Center, Riddell is also chairwoman of the Georgetown Alumni Admissions Program Committee’s Buffalo affiliate.

Edmunds, who is special counsel at Phillips Lytle, said the association is fortunate to have her as president.

"Her energy and enthusiasm will be a great asset toward continuing the traditions of the association and introducing new initiatives," he said of his firm colleague.

"It is my hope that I will be able to … assist and complement Sakina’s efforts to implement her vision and to achieve her goals in this new role."
