Fulbright Creates M.D. Anderson Ronald Glenn Bliss Fellowship
In memory of Houston partner Ron Bliss, Fulbright & Jaworski has established the Ronald Glenn Bliss Fellowship in the Department of Melanoma Medical Oncology at The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center.

The Ronald Glenn Bliss Fellowship will provide a $50,000 gift to help advance research into the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of melanoma. It will also be the basis for physicians to gain additional funds to pursue new avenues of research. This work will serve as a training ground for future generations of melanoma researchers and specialists, who will continue the fight against cancer.

Fulbright’s relationship with M.D. Anderson began 70 years ago when Fulbright partners William B. Bates and John H. Freeman became two of the three original trustees of the M.D. Anderson Foundation. The Foundation later established the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center.

Bliss headed Fulbright’s intellectual property and technology department for 15 years before he passed away in February 2005, at the age of 61. A decorated Vietnam War fighter pilot who flew 35 missions, he was shot down Sept. 4, 1966. He was imprisoned for 6½ years in the infamous “Hanoi Hilton” prisoner-of-war camp.

16 McGuireWoods Lawyers Named “Virginia Rising Stars 2007”
Sixteen McGuireWoods LLP lawyers were named “Virginia Rising Stars Super Lawyers 2007” by Law & Politics, published in conjunction with Richmond magazine. The findings are published in the magazine’s January 2007 issue.

As part of the selection process, Law & Politics mailed ballots to the most recently named “Virginia Super Lawyers.” The lawyers are asked to nominate the best up-and-coming lawyers who are 40 years of age or younger, or in practice for 10 years or less, and whom they have personally observed in action. In addition, the Law & Politics attorney-led research department reviews the nominees’ credentials based on a set of evaluation criteria, including confirmation of their license and any history of disciplinary action (which would remove them from consideration). To ensure a diverse and well-balanced list, the research staff considers factors such as firm size, practice area and geographic location.

The McGuireWoods “Virginia Rising Stars 2007” include the following lawyers, and the categories for which they were recognized:

* William H. Baxter, II, appellate
* Brian C. Bernhardt, tax
* Eric J. Crupi, bankruptcy

William G. Fendley, IV, tax
