WCM Granted Summary Judgment in Queens County Personal Injury Action
Partner Gregory Vetter was granted summary judgment in a Queens County personal injury action. In the case of Hadida v. Chateau Jewelry Corp., the plaintiff was struck by a door that was being opened and suffered various physical injuries including a wrist fracture that required surgery and external fixation. Plaintiff claimed that the door was improperly designed and unfit for an exit door and that, our client, the building’s owner, negligently maintained the door in question.

At the close of discovery, we moved for summary judgment. We argued that the door was in compliance with all relevant municipal regulations and that our client lacked any notice of a potential problem with the door or entranceway. The plaintiff opposed our motion and submitted an expert’s report claiming that the door was defective in support of its claim that there was an issue of fact precluding summary judgment. In our reply papers, we noted that the expert’s report was improper as it was submitted solely in response to our motion and the expert’s opinions were nothing more than speculation

Smith Anderson 'Teams' Up with Community Organizations to Support Duke Women's Basketball
Smith, Anderson, Blount, Dorsett, Mitchell & Jernigan, LLP (Smith Anderson) proudly sponsored the first Duke Women's Basketball game of 2007 held on January 3rd at Duke University's Cameron Indoor Stadium in Durham. With a 15-0 record this year, the third-ranked Duke Blue Devils hosted the University of Miami and won 72-42.

The sponsorship afforded Smith Anderson the opportunity to distribute 1000 tickets to diverse professional, civic and charitable organizations throughout the Triangle-area with a specific emphasis on those organizations that support girls' sports programs and personal development. For some, attendance at Wednesday night's game marked the first opportunity to witness first-hand women collegiate athletics in person.

In conjunction with this game and in keeping with the theme of honoring excellence by women, Smith Anderson also hosted a Professional Women's Networking event within the Hall of Fame at Cameron Indoor Stadium. The social gathering held before the game and during half-time offered an opportunity for women who attended the game as guests of Smith Anderson to reacquaint with old friends and meet new contacts. "Attendance at this event exceeded our expectations," said Margaret Rosenfeld, a partner at Smith Anderson and event organizer. "It gave Triangle-area professional women a wonderful opportunity to connect with each other, make contacts and support local women's athletics at the same time.
