Kirkland Opens in Hong Kong
Kirkland & Ellis LLP announced today that it has opened an office in Hong Kong. The international law firm recently received final regulatory approval and moved into new offices in the ICBC Tower of Citibank Plaza, in the heart of Hong Kong’s Central financial district.

Private equity partner David Patrick Eich, who has relocated from London, will lead the office. Mr. Eich was instrumental in establishing the Firm’s European transactional practice and played a key role in the global team which recently closed the $10.2 billion leveraged buyout of Philips Semiconductors on behalf of a consortium of private equity funds, one of the largest private equity deals ever completed.

Mr. Eich will be joined by partner Chuan Li and senior associate Tai Hsia from Kirkland’s Chicago and London offices, respectively. Both have extensive private equity experience and are fluent in Mandarin. The Hong Kong team is bolstered by more than 20 lawyers from Kirkland’s U.S. and European offices with Asian deal experience and cultural ties.

“Having an office and resident partners in Asia is a priority for Kirkland & Ellis,” said Thomas D. Yannucci, Chair of Kirkland’s Firmwide Management Committee. “China is the fastest-growing economy in the world and an area where many of our clients are already active.”

“Private equity is now a global business and our blue-chip buyout clients expect the same sophisticated legal support in Greater China and the rest of Asia that they demand elsewhere,” Mr. Eich said. “We aspire to use our extensive experience in global private equity to become a premier private equity law firm in Asia.”

Kirkland regularly represents more than 80 private equity funds and has raised more than $140 billion for financial sponsors in the last 10 years. The Firm’s private equity practice has been recognized by legal publisher Chambers & Partners as one of the best in the world and topped mergermarket’s league table for the most private equity deals handled by a law firm in 2005.

FORCES JOIN TO CREATE LARGE SOUTHEASTERN LAW FIRM
Maupin Taylor, P.A., North Carolina’s oldest law firm, and Williams Mullen, Virginia’s third largest law firm, today announced they have signed a letter of intent to combine the firms. The resulting firm will be one of the largest in the Southeast with 300 attorneys and will have expanded capabilities to serve clients in both states as well as in federally regulated and cross-border transactions.

“It is our responsibility as legal advisors to ensure that we have the appropriate resources to assist clients in their growth,” said Keith Kapp, Maupin Taylor’s managing partner. “Williams Mullen is a great fit for Maupin Taylor, and the depth they bring in legal experience will help enhance our capabilities and expand our services into new territory.”

The two firms will be working diligently with existing clients over the next few months to ensure a seamless transition.

“We will keep the high quality of service that each of our firms is known for,” said Joey Smith, chairman and CEO of Williams Mullen. “Clients will have the same attorney relationships they have now with access to additional resources when needed.”

As a result of the pending merger, the firm’s attorneys and staff will combine to total nearly 700 employees. The combined firm will operate offices in Raleigh, Research Triangle Park and Wilmington, N.C.; Charlottesville, Newport News, Norfolk, Richmond, Tysons Corner, Virginia Beach and Portsmouth, Va.; Washington, D.C.; and London.

Gateway Bank, a mutual client of both firms, said the merger will provide added service benefits.

“Companies want the best resources and capabilities when it comes to their outside counsel. You want the most equipped team possible.” said Ben Berry, chairman and CEO of Gateway Bank and Trust Co. “With this merger, both firms, who already have vast synergies, can enhance their resources and expand practices. Joining forces will only strengthen their service.”

The name of the firm will be Williams Mullen, although North Carolina offices will operate under the name Williams Mullen Maupin Taylor for a transition period. Joey Smith will continue as chairman and CEO of the merged entity.

Both are full-service law firms providing legal advice in areas such as labor and employment, corporate finance and securities, litigation, tax, government relations and more for clients in industries such as financial services, health care, transportation, technology, insurance and real estate and development. Maupin Taylor and Williams Mullen attorneys have also served as state and local judges, state legislators, as well as North Carolina and Virginia Bar Association officials.

In addition to their similar practice areas, Maupin Taylor and Williams Mullen share a history of strong community involvement. Attorneys at each firm are encouraged to serve their communities, beyond the practice of law. Both firms participate in their area United Way campaigns and support numerous business and community organizations. Historically, Maupin Taylor has been a leader in its support of North Carolina economic development groups working with the local chambers and industry organizations to bring more opportunities to the Triangle and the state.
