For the Eighth Year in a Row, FORTUNE Names Alston & Bird on its List of "100 Best Companies to Work For"
Alston & Bird LLP announced today that it has been ranked 19th among FORTUNE magazine’s “100 Best Companies to Work For” in 2007, making it the highest ranked law firm on the list and the only law firm ever to make the list for eight consecutive years, including placement in the top 25 for seven years in a row. The 10th annual list and related stories will appear in the January 22 issue of FORTUNE, available on newsstands January 15 and at www.fortune.com today.

“Alston & Bird is proud to once again be recognized by FORTUNE as one of the premier companies to work for in America, and we are especially proud of our eight consecutive-year record of inclusion,” said Ben F. Johnson III, Alston & Bird’s managing partner. “We provide our employees with the resources they need to be the best they can be, whether that is continuing professional development or our on-site day care. The recognition from FORTUNE has proved to be a significant factor in both attorney and administrative personnel hiring. It attracts high-caliber employees that truly define the strong sense of spirit at Alston & Bird.”

In particular, FORTUNE cited Alston & Bird for its constant flow of communications with employees and commitment to open discussion and keeping employees “in the loop.” The firm garnered repeated accolades for its progressive approach toward ensuring a positive work-life balance with flexible work arrangements, world-class child-care facilities and generous parental leave.

Much has changed in the American workplace over the past decade. Back then 18 companies on FORTUNE’s list offered telecommuting; today 82 do. Only 28 companies on the list offered domestic partner benefits; now that number is 70. Competition to get on the list has intensified too: This year 446 companies vied for a slot, up from 161 in 1998. And, 100,000 workers evaluated their employers, making this by far the largest simultaneous employee survey in corporate America.

David B. Wilson, a partner in R&C's Labor, Employment & Benefits Section, and Rita Trivedi, a 2005 and 2006 firm summer associate who is scheduled to begin as an associate at R&C in September 2007, published an article entitled "Navigating the Corporate Blogosphere" in the November 2006 issue of Bender's Labor & Employment Bulletin.

The article then considers some of the liabilities that accompany this powerful tool, such as responsibility for the statements employees or executives make on a corporate blog, risks of improperly limiting employee speech, and breaches of sensitive information such as employee privacy or trade secrets.

Dorsey & Whitney Law Firm Named to GLBT "Best Places To Work" List
Dorsey & Whitney policies and practices in support of workplace equality for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (GLBT) employees make it one of 12 U.S. law firms designated “Best Places to Work,” according to a national GLBT civil rights organization.

The Human Rights Campaign Foundation provides the designation to employers who score 100 percent on its “Corporate Equality Index,” a measure of policies and practices implemented to promote workplace fairness and equality for GLBT employees.

"This is our version of the 'Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval' showing that these 142 companies have a philosophy of inclusion and are committed to fairness and equality for all Americans," said Joe Solmonese, president of the Human Rights Campaign.

Dorsey achieved a perfect rating on 10 index measures, including: having a written non-discrimination policy covering sexual orientation and sexual identity; providing diversity training; offering inclusive health insurance, bereavement, and family leave policies to employees with same-sex partners; providing health benefits to transgender employees; having GLBT employee groups; and engaging in respectful advertising to the GLBT community.

“We’re proud of this recognition, which reflects Dorsey’s 100 percent commitment to having a workplace in which people feel included and welcomed,” said Melissa Raphan, a Dorsey partner and co-chair of the firm’s global diversity initiative.
