Woodcock Washburn Profiled in IP Law360, the Newswire for IP Professionals
For the last 60 years, Woodcock Washburn LLP has worked hard to establish itself as one of the foremost intellectual property boutiques, and the firm has no plans to budge from its hard-earned spot at the top.

Founded in 1946, the firm has grown from a small Pennsylvania outfit to one that boasts 90 attorneys scattered throughout offices in Atlanta, Philadelphia and Seattle. Begun by sole practitioner Virgil Woodcock, the firm is now headed up by a three-member policy committee, with partners Joseph Lucci and Steven Samuels having just been elected to join the leadership trio.

Partner Steven Rocci will remain on the committee while Dianne Elderkin and Dale Heist will step down after having served on the team since 2001, Woodcock Washburn recently revealed. “The firm’s partners felt that it was important that the new committee reflect the makeup of the firm, while also maintaining continuity,” said Rocci. “With the committee being composed of one senior, one midlevel and one junior partner, representing the firm’s various legal and technical practice areas, we accomplished these goals.”

As the background of the new leadership group suggests, Woodcock Washburn prides itself on being able to cover all aspects of IP law at a level that it believes few other firms can match.

“We have a lot of depth in many different respects,” says Rocci Though the firm dabbles in all industries, Woodcock Washburn attorneys are particularly knowledgeable in the biotechnology, chemistry, chemicals, electrical and mechanical engineering, and software industries.

“On a technical level, we do electronics, biotechnology, biopharmaceutical -you name it,” he said. “Almost all of us are engineers or scientists.”Woodcock Washburn is not only specialized technically speaking but also in the type of law that the firm practices, according to Rocci.

The firm’s attorneys boast vast experience in patent, trademark and copyright law, litigation and trade secret protection, with a number of them All Content Copyright 2006, Portfolio Media, Inc. having served as the general intellectual property counsel at major corporations.

Forces Join to Create Large Southeastern Firm
Williams Mullen, Virginia's third largest law firm, and Maupin Taylor, P.A., North Carolina's oldest law firm, today announced they have signed a letter of intent to combine the firms. The resulting firm will be one of the largest in the Southeast with 300 attorneys and will have expanded capabilities to serve clients in both states as well as in federally regulated and cross-border transactions.

"We are excited about this growth opportunity," said Joey Smith, chairman and CEO of Williams Mullen. "The combined firm will provide our clients with access to additional resources while maintaining the same high quality of service each of our firms is known for."

The two firms will be working diligently with existing clients over the next few months to ensure a seamless transition.

"It is our responsibility as legal advisors to ensure that we have the appropriate resources to assist clients in their growth," said Keith Kapp, Maupin Taylor's managing partner. "Williams Mullen is a great fit for Maupin Taylor, and the depth they bring in legal experience will help enhance our capabilities and expand our services into new territory."

As a result of the pending merger, the firm's attorneys and staff will combine to total nearly 700 employees. The combined firm will operate offices in Raleigh, Research Triangle Park and Wilmington, N.C.; Charlottesville, Newport News, Norfolk, Richmond, Tysons Corner, Virginia Beach and Portsmouth, Va.; Washington, D.C.; and London.

Gateway Bank, a mutual client of both firms, said the merger will provide added service benefits.
"Companies want the best resources and capabilities when it comes to their outside counsel. You want the most equipped team possible." said Ben Berry, chairman and CEO of Gateway Bank and Trust Co. "With this merger, both firms, who already have vast synergies, can enhance their resources and expand practices. Joining forces will only strengthen their service."

The name of the firm will be Williams Mullen, although North Carolina offices will operate under the name Williams Mullen Maupin Taylor for a transition period. Joey Smith will continue as chairman and CEO of the merged entity.

Both are full-service law firms providing legal advice in areas such as labor and employment, corporate finance and securities, litigation, tax, government relations and more for clients in industries such as financial services, health care, transportation, technology, insurance and real estate and development. Williams Mullen and Maupin Taylor attorneys have also served as state and local judges, state legislators, as well as Virginia and North Carolina Bar Association officials.
In addition to their similar practice areas, Williams Mullen and Maupin Taylor share a history of strong community involvement. Attorneys at each firm are encouraged to serve their communities, beyond the practice of law. Both firms participate in their area United Way campaigns and support numerous business and community organizations. Williams Mullen attorneys and staff hold leadership positions on the boards and committees of a wide array of non-profit organizations and colleges and universities. They also maintain their own funding entity, the Williams Mullen Charitable Foundation.

Final details of the merger are still being confirmed, but it is scheduled to close March 1.

Five Years in a Row! Perkins Coie Named to FORTUNE Magazine's 100 Best Places to Work for Fifth Year
Perkins Coie announced that it's been named one of the nation's "100 Best Companies to Work For" by FORTUNE magazine for the fifth straight year. It is one of only five law firms nationwide to make the list. The firm was ranked #64 overall.

"We are thrilled to be named one of the best places to work for the fifth straight year," said Managing Partner Robert E. Giles. "This honor is a reflection of the tremendously talented people that we hire and our collegial culture, which encourages them to reach the top of their potential."

The firm's focus on excellence has been validated by various other organizations. Vault, Inc. ranked Perkins Coie among the most prestigious law firms in the world in its 2007 edition of the Vault Guide to the Top 100 Law Firms. Woodward/White, publishers of The Best Lawyers in America, named 110 Perkins Coie attorneys as the best in the country in its 2007 edition, and ChambersUSA ranked Perkins Coie as a leading law firm in 24 different areas in markets across the country, including the top ranking in 13 areas.

"The 100 Best Companies to Work For" list is compiled for FORTUNE by Robert Levering and Milton Moskowitz of the Great Place to Work Institute in San Francisco. The list is based on two criteria: an evaluation of the policies and culture of each company, and the opinions of the company's employees. The latter is given more weight; two-thirds of the total score comes from employee responses to a 57-question survey which goes to a minimum of 400 randomly selected employees from each company. More than 100,000 employees from 446 companies participated in the survey this year. It asks about things such as attitudes towards management, job satisfaction, and camaraderie within the organization. The remaining one-third of the score is based on an evaluation of each company's demographic makeup, pay and benefits programs, and culture.
