Haynes Returns as Partner in Litigation Department at Baker Botts
Catharina Haynes, who presided over the 191st District Court of Dallas County for eight years, has returned to Baker Botts as a partner in the firm's Litigation Department. She will be based in Dallas.

Haynes was a partner at Baker Botts before being elected to the bench in November 1998, taking office in January 1999. She was re-elected in 2002. She is board certified in consumer and commercial law.

Haynes joins a nationally-recognized litigation department: For the past two years, Baker Botts has been named one of the country's 10 "Hottest Defense Teams" by the National Law Journal.

"Catharina's experience as a member of the state's judiciary coupled with her previous years with Baker Botts makes her a strong addition to our talented team of trial lawyers in Dallas and firmwide," said Walt Smith, the firm's Managing Partner. "While the state lost an excellent judge, our clients will benefit from having Catharina's expertise working on their behalf."

In addition to her duties as judge of the 191st District Court, Haynes served as the Presiding Judge of the Civil District Courts in 2005. In 2003, she was appointed by the Texas Supreme Court as Chair of the Texas Court Reporters Certification Board, which is responsible for certifying, recertifying and disciplining court reporters in Texas, for a term that expired in December 2006. She was recently appointed to the Texas Professional Ethics Committee by the Texas Supreme Court.

Haynes has been active in the legal community throughout her career. She received the 2005 Award of Excellence from the DAYL Foundation. She was also the recipient of the 2004 Louise B. Raggio Award and the 2003 Outstanding Board Member Award from the Dallas Women Lawyers Association. She is a fellow in the Dallas Bar Foundation and a Founding Fellow of the DAYL Foundation. She is a current member of the Council (governing body) of the State Bar of Texas Insurance Section. She served as a director of the Dallas Bar Association in 2001.

She currently serves as a member of the Board of Directors of Vickery Meadow Learning Center, a non-profit organization dedicated to English language and literacy instruction for adults for whom English is a second language.

Haynes received her J.D. with distinction from the Emory University School of Law in 1986. She was honored as an Outstanding Woman Law Graduate by the National Association of Women Lawyers that year. She earned a B.S. degree with highest honors from the Florida Institute of Technology in 1983.

IP Lawyer Louis Ederer Joins Arnold & Porter As Partner
Arnold & Porter LLP announced today that intellectual property lawyer and litigator Louis S. Ederer has joined Arnold & Porter as a partner in the firm’s New York office, expanding the firm’s litigation capabilities and its IP presence in New York.

Mr. Ederer’s practice covers a comprehensive range of areas in IP, including counseling and litigation in trademarks, copyrights and patents. He is an experienced trial lawyer who has been involved in precedent-setting cases in the area of trademark and design mark protection, and he leads a strong brand enforcement practice that includes anti-counterfeiting work in the high-profile luxury goods and apparel industries. He also has expertise in distributor and franchise matters in the alcoholic beverage industry that includes litigating franchise and distributor termination cases for prominent suppliers. Mr. Ederer is joined in his move by associates John Maltbie and Alisa Cahan and a third colleague of many years, Alan Veronick.

“Lou has a robust IP litigation practice that fits well with the work we are doing in New York, Washington, Los Angeles and London,” said James Swire, who heads Arnold & Porter’s IP litigation group in New York. “His comprehensive background in IP counseling and excellent track record in trademark protection and enforcement for high-profile clients makes him and his group an ideal fit for our practice.” Mr. Swire joined Arnold & Porter in 2005, and has been at the helm of a highly visible case for Tiffany that aims to curtail the sale of counterfeit merchandise on eBay.

Mr. Ederer joins Arnold & Porter from the New York office of a Canadian-based firm, where he was a partner and head of the New York intellectual property practice, assisting clients in trademark, patent and copyright litigation, prosecution and counseling. In private practice for nearly 30 years, Mr. Ederer has helped clients select and clear trademarks and implemented trademark prosecution, opposition and enforcement programs in the U.S. and around the world. In brand enforcement litigation, he has obtained precedent-setting decisions, establishing new parameters for damage and profit awards against counterfeiters and securing large sanction awards for discovery abuse.

He also has been involved in all aspects of protection and enforcement in copyright and patent law, including registration of original works of authorship, complex licensing and the acquisition and sale of software. Mr. Ederer advises clients on IP issues relating to commercial transactions, and has represented clients before state and federal government agencies including the TTB, the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the FDA, the FTC, and various state alcoholic beverage agencies. He also has substantial experience in sports and entertainment matters, having acted as outside counsel to professional sports franchises and litigated complex recording industry issues.

The Phoenix Symphony honors Former Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor and John Jay O’Connor
The Phoenix Symphony announced today that it will name one of its musician chairs for eminent Arizonans and classical music lovers former Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor and her husband John Jay O’Connor. The naming will occur before the symphony concert 7:30 p.m., Thursday, January 11, at Symphony Hall, 75 N. Second Street, Phoenix.

The Phoenix Symphony is naming the contrabassoon chair in honor of John Jay and Sandra Day O’Connor, for their many years of interest in classical music and their longtime patronage of The Phoenix Sympony, as well as recognizing Justice O’Connor’s status as an eminent Arizonan and Phoenician. The naming ceremony will coincide with an evening of music, where renowned violinist Midori will play Beethoven’s Violin Concerto.

“This is a great day for the symphony,” said Phoenix Symphony board chairman Gerald Murphy. “We are proud to recognize Justice and Mr. O’Connor for their service to Arizona and to their country.”

Phoenix Symphony President and CEO Maryellen Gleason said that after Justice O’Connor’s retirement, symphony administration looked for a way to honor the couple. The naming of the chair, currently held by bassoonist Erik Ludwig, seemed like the perfect choice, since the symphony had recently named a string section chair for a donor.

“The O’Connor Chair will now be a fixture in the symphony, recognizing their great contributions. We’re ecstatic to be able to honor them in this way.

GARRIGUES OPENS OFFICE IN WARSAW
Garrigues has opened a new office in Warsaw (Poland) as a first step towards establishing its presence in other central and eastern European countries. The venture involves the integration into Garrigues of the firm “Fúster & Sartorius” (F&S) which has been operating in the region for five years, and its founders, Jaime Fúster and Jacobo Sartorius, will be joining Garrigues as partners after ratification at the upcoming Partners’ Meeting. Both professionals have extensive experience in providing advice to businesses on setting up operations in these countries and will be responsible for Garrigues’ expansion in the region.

The new Warsaw office will field an initial team of fifteen lawyers, covering practically all practice areas: real estate and zoning; financial services and banking; foreign investment; corporate; infrastructure; labor and employment; litigation, and tax.
The opening of this office is a natural consequence of Garrigues’ attitude to economic globalization. Just a few years ago, Spain and Portugal were basically destinations for investment, with the exception of capital invested in Latin America, but the situation is changing rapidly. After heavily backing the Latin American market, with a significant network of its own offices and a presence through Affinitas in Latin America, a natural region for growth given the cultural and linguistic similarities, Garrigues has set its sights on other areas increasingly targeted by European investors. This new phase in its strategy commenced with the opening of its offices in Shanghai and Casablanca and now continues in Central and Eastern Europe.

“For some time now, Garrigues has been seeing a steady flow of Spanish and Portuguese investments towards Eastern Europe,” explained Garrigues Partner José Palacios, one of the architects of the Firm’s international expansion. “The next logical step was to ensure an ongoing service by setting up our own office in the Polish capital. Our ultimate objective, however, given the interest we have noted in Spain in everything happening in the new EU Member States, is to become the firm of choice in the local markets in this region.”

As Jaime Fúster, ultimately responsible for Garrigues’ expansion in the region sees it, “the strategy goes much further than Poland, which is, in itself, a highly important country. The core idea is to be able to offer our clients a comprehensive service throughout Central and Eastern Europe. We plan to open an office in Romania and foreseeably another in Bulgaria in 2007.”
The new Warsaw office will be supported by the Garrigues EU and Antitrust Law Department and the international Taxand network, of which Garrigues is a founding member. “Our aim is for all our offices to be perceived by clients as a byword for quality and service” explained Marcos

Araujo, the partner in charge of the Department. “There is no reason why the Warsaw office should be any different from the Madrid, Barcelona, Lisbon or Seville offices.”
Garrigues’ international network boasts 27 offices in the Iberian Peninsula with another five offices in Brussels, Casablanca, New York, Shanghai and Warsaw.
