Evan Tager argues important dormant commerce clause case in the Supreme Court
Mayer, Brown, Rowe & Maw LLP attorney Evan Tager today argued United Haulers Association v. Oneida-Herkimer Solid Waste Management Authority, No. 05-1345, in the U.S. Supreme Court. The Court will decide whether a requirement that all garbage generated in a county be disposed of in a county-owned disposal facility discriminates against interstate commerce in violation of the Commerce Clause of the United States Constitution.

Myles Roberts Joins Steptoe & Johnson PLLC
Myles D. Roberts has joined the Business Department of Steptoe & Johnson PLLC practicing in the firm’s Charleston office as an associate. Roberts will focus his practice in the areas of banking and commercial transactions. He is a member of the West Virginia and Delaware bars and received his legal education from the University of Virginia, where he worked on the Virginia Journal of Law & Technology. Roberts received his undergraduate degrees in economics and political science from West Virginia University in 1997.

Prior to law school, Roberts worked as a computer network engineer at the headquarters of the Federal Aviation Administration.

Steptoe & Johnson PLLC, a multi-practice law firm, has provided customized legal services to business, industry, and public entities in West Virginia and the region for nearly a century. Sonnenschein Adds Corporate Attorney Thomas Cleary In Los Angeles
Sonnenschein Nath & Rosenthal LLP today announced that Thomas M. Cleary has joined the law firm as a partner in its national Corporate Practice Group. He will reside in Sonnenschein’s Los Angeles office.

“Tom brings substantial M&A, private equity and corporate securities experience to Sonnenschein. He is an integral part of the corporate group’s expansion on the West Coast and across the country,” said Paul Gajer, chair of Sonnenschein’s Corporate Practice Group. “Tom’s knowledge and expertise will add great value for our clients.”

Cleary represents several well-known buyout, venture capital and other private equity financing sources, as well as a diverse group of portfolio companies. He has worked with companies across a broad array of industry sectors, including e-commerce, food service, apparel retailing and consumer products.

“This is an exciting period of growth for Sonnenschein, and I look forward to being a part of it,” said Cleary. “The size and scope of the firm will be a great fit for me as I continue to develop my practice.”

Cleary received a J.D. degree from the University of California, Berkeley, School of Law. He earned a B.S. degree in chemical engineering, Tau Beta Pi, from the University of Notre Dame. Cleary currently serves as a director of the Los Angeles Chapter of the Association for Corporate Growth.

New Associate: Amy L. VanDyke
Amy L. VanDyke has become an associate of Mika Meyers. She received a bachelor of science degree from Western Michigan University, a doctorate from University of Notre Dame, and a law degree from the University of Notre Dame Law School. Amy practices business law and estate planning.

Dallas Office Expands
Our firm’s Dallas office expanded on January 8th with the addition of partners Mark Dyer and Alan Moore and associate Jason Spivey. All three are trial lawyers who specialize in the defense of personal injury cases with particular emphasis in product liability, toxic torts, auto liability, premise liability and professional negligence claims. They join our firm from the Dallas office of Fanning, Harper & Martinson. The addition of these talented lawyers significantly expands the firm’s trial practice in north Texas in order to continue to meet the litigation needs of our clients.

Greenberg Traurig Adds Intellectual Property Shareholder
The international law firm Greenberg Traurig, LLP announced today that Allan W. Jansen has joined the firm’s Orange County office as a Shareholder in their intellectual property litigation practice group. Since its inception two years ago, the Orange County office of Greenberg Traurig has grown from seven to 30 attorneys, and Jansen joins a skilled group of intellectual property attorneys, all of whom are registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

Jansen, who joins the firm from the Irvine office of Jones Day, focuses his practice primarily on patent, trademark, trade secret, antitrust and unfair competition litigation. He has represented clients in multiple industries, including clients with stakes in emerging technologies. His representative list of clients includes Dow AgroSciences, Gen-Probe, DirecTV and numerous venture capital firms.

“We are delighted to have Al join the firm. With GT’s global platform and Al’s wide range of experience, we are continually adding value to our client services,” said Raymond Lee, Managing Shareholder of the Orange County office.

Jansen has nearly 30 years of experience in intellectual property counseling and litigation and utilizes his broad technical education to maximize his clients’ intellectual property portfolios. From start-ups to established corporations, Jansen works to maximize the commercial value of his clients’ research and development efforts.

Jansen earned his J.D. from the John Marshall Law School and his B.S. in Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering, with a specialization in physics and electrical engineering and a minor in material sciences, from the University of Illinois. He also has taken graduate level studies in biophysics and computer science and, prior to his legal career, worked in industry as a systems analyst.
