Martin Named “Top Lawyer of 2006”
Missouri Lawyers Weekly has named Blackwell Sanders Partner Eric Martin one of the state’s “Top Lawyers of 2006.” This past year, Martin has represented some of St. Louis’ largest companies in cases involving cutting edge legal issues and obtained a series of noteworthy results. He was one of seven Missouri attorneys chosen for “winning important decisions, raising challenging legal issues, or otherwise furthering the profession’s commitment to the rule of law and to justice in the state.”

Martin specializes in business and commercial litigation, representing corporate and individual clients in a wide variety of commercial disputes. Such disputes include eminent domain, real estate, director and officer liability, and securities. He has extensive trial and appellate experience in both state and federal courts.

Melvin Wright Joins Baker Botts as Partner in Litigation Department
Melvin Wright, a former prosecutor and deputy attorney general in New Jersey early in his career, has joined Baker Botts as a partner in the firm's Litigation Department. He is based in the firm's New York office.

Most recently, Wright was a partner at Sonnenschein Nath & Rosenthal LLP where he represented corporations and corporate officers in federal and state white-collar criminal investigations and corporate clients in franchise and trademark disputes, insurance matters, commercial litigation, asbestos and consumer claims.

"Mel provides our Litigation Department additional depth in general business litigation and white-collar crime," said Walt Smith, Managing Partner of Baker Botts. "His work as a prosecutor in New Jersey gave him an insight -- from grand jury indictments to trial strategy -- into legal processes that will prove to be invaluable to the clients he will represent as a partner in one of the country's leading litigation departments."

For the past two years, Baker Botts has been named one of the 10 "Hottest Defense Firms" in the United States by the National Law Journal.

Wright earned his J.D. from Seton Hall University School of Law in 1991. He served as a law clerk for New Jersey Supreme Court Chief Justice Robert N. Wilentz during the 1991-92 Court term, and as a deputy attorney general in the Office of the Attorney General for the State of New Jersey.

Wright served as an adjunct instructor for the trial advocacy program at the University of Chicago Law School. Wright also served on the Character and Fitness Committee of the Illinois Supreme Court, and as a Board Member of The Better Government Association.

Arnold & Porter Makes FORTUNE's "100 Best Companies to Work For" List Five Years Running
Yesterday, Arnold & Porter LLP was named to FORTUNE's prestigious "100 Best Companies to Work For" list, the fifth consecutive year the firm has been so honored. Ranked number 26, Arnold & Porter is one of only five law firms in the country to make the list this year. The FORTUNE list is regarded as the most authoritative of its kind, largely because two-thirds of an employer's score is based on a confidential survey of employees.

"We are grateful for this recognition of Arnold & Porter's positive working environment," said Arnold & Porter Chairman Thomas Milch. "It affirms our core values of excellence, public service and diversity, which create a strong and collegial place to work and, in turn, enable us to provide more effective legal services to our clients." Arnold & Porter ranked fifth out of 90 for "Best Compensation for Salaried Employees" and eighth out of 25 for "Best Small-Sized Company." The firm was highlighted in the additional categories of "Unusual Perks," "Most Women" and "Most Diverse."

The FORTUNE list is compiled by Robert Levering and Milton Moskowitz of the Great Place to Work Institute in San Francisco, based on two criteria: an evaluation of the policies and culture of each company, and the opinions of the company's employees. The latter is given more weight; two-thirds of the total score comes from employee responses to a 57-question survey. More than 100,000 employees from 446 companies participated in the survey this year. Companies are scored in four areas: credibility (communication to employees), respect (opportunities and benefits), fairness (compensation, diversity), and pride/camaraderie (philanthropy, celebrations.

FETF Partner Quoted in the Chicago Daily Law Bulletin
when the US Supreme Court handed down a ground-breaking decision that makes it easier for licensees to challenge patents, the Chicago Daily Law Bulletin called FETF partner Joe Shipley asking for comment. Joe explained that the decision, MedImmune, Inc. v. Genentech, Inc means that a licensee can now sue the patent holder for a declaratory judgment that the patent is invalid and not infringed while still paying royalties and remaining in "good standing" under the license. He also pointed out that the decision may tend to level the playing field between “patent trolls” and the companies that have taken licenses from them.

Joe is in his 25th year with FETF, where his practice includes licensing, prosecution, counseling and litigation. His speaking engagements in recent years include lectures on licensing at DePaul University College of Law and Practicing law Institute (PLI) programs. He is currently vice-president of the Intellectual Property Law Association of Chicago.

LAMB McERLANE ATTORNEYS TO INTRODUCE “THE APPELLATE WHEEL OF (MIS)FORTUNE” AT TATEWIDE BAR PROGRAMS IN JANUARY
Attorneys James C. Sargent, Jr., Scot Withers and Joshua Villari of Lamb McErlane PC, a full service law firm in West Chester, and Dean Phillips of Elliott Greenleaf and Siedzikowski in Blue Bell, will present “The Appellate Wheel of (Mis)Fortune,” a series of CLE programs for the Pennsylvania Bar Institute, this month to demonstrate the strategic opportunities, common mistakes, and procedural pitfalls associated with appellate law practice.
The “Appellate Wheel of (Mis)Fortune” programs will be held from 8:45 a.m. to noon on three separate dates across Pennsylvania: Friday, January 12 in Pittsburgh, Friday, January 19 in Philadelphia, and Tuesday, January 30 in Mechanicsburg.
The course, designed by Pennsylvania Bar Association Appellate Advocacy Committee Co-Chairs the Hon. Mary Jane Bowes, Pennsylvania Superior Court and James Sargent of Lamb McErlane; and Dean Phillips of Elliott Greenleaf, will focus on practical problems encountered by appellate attorneys, as well as technical requirements for the rules of appellate procedure. The format will include an interactive game show question and answer segment entitled “The Appellate Wheel of (Mis)Fortune” that addresses recent court cases to reveal common procedural mistakes that may damage a claim’s chances for success. In particular, the course will look at controversial rule 1925(b), which provides strict standards for filing cases on appeal, including recent changes and developments in its application.
“ ‘The ‘Appellate Wheel of (Mis)Fortune’ provides an engaging and entertaining format for attorneys to learn about the recent court decisions that impact the practice of appellate law and procedural pitfalls that often prevent otherwise viable claims from being heard,” says Sargent, who is also a member of the Appellate Procedural Rules Committee for the Pennsylvania Supreme Court. “This type of course is a very user-friendly way to obtain information and unique perspectives from a highly respected panel of experts who cannot be accessed together anywhere else.”
Faculty for “The Appellate Wheel of (Mis)Fortune” includes:
