Smith Anderson Announces the Addition of Amy D. McConkey to its Public and Government Affairs Team
Smith, Anderson, Blount, Dorsett, Mitchell & Jernigan, LLP (Smith Anderson) is pleased to announce that Amy D. McConkey has joined the Firm's Public and Government Affairs team this week as a Legislative Assistant, reporting to practice chair B. Davis (Dave) Horne, Jr.

Ms. McConkey will have primary responsibility to work closely with Firm lawyers to advance the public and government affairs goals of Firm clients. Her diverse duties will include acting as liaison between Firm lawyers and clients to keep them apprised of legislation and important initiatives; conducting research; monitoring the status of critical legislation of importance to clients; generating status reports; and working collaboratively with other Firm departments to accomplish client objectives.

"We are very pleased that Amy has joined our team," said practice chair Dave Horne. Firm lawyer, Dana Simpson concurred adding "Amy's diverse experience and background will provide tremendous value to our Firm, team and most importantly, our public and government affairs clients."

A graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a B.A. in Political Science and Journalism, Ms. McConkey's prior professional experience afforded her frequent interaction with state officials, the media and prominent business leaders. She previously worked as a reporter for the North Carolina State Watch (now The Insider) and as Education Director for the North Carolina Bankers Association.

Ms. McConkey joins a well-respected Public and Government Affairs team which includes both Mr. Horne and Mr. Simpson, both of whom recently received the honor of selection for the 2005-2006 list of The Most Influential Lobbyists in the 2005 North Carolina General Assembly, as published by The North Carolina Center for Public Policy Research.

ATTORNEY PETER NIEVES IS AGAIN FEATURED IN ENTREPRENEURSHIP COURSE AT DARTMOUTH
Peter Nieves, an attorney with the law firm of Sheehan Phinney Bass + Green, will be among the faculty for an entrepreneurship course presented by the Tuck School of Business, the Dartmouth Medical School and the Dartmouth Entrepreneurial Network.

The course, “Introduction to Entrepreneurship” will cover the commercialization of technology, entrepreneurship, and fundamentals in major areas of conceptualizing and launching a successful new business including; concept development; market and competitive assessment; business plan development; team building; financing and investor presentations and execution.


Attorney Nieves will teach sessions on the definitions of Intellectual Property; NDA’s and disclosures; basics of patents; trademarks and copyrights; defining, securing and protecting intellectual property; and how to identify and work with patent attorneys.

The course is being offered at the Tuck School of Business on Thursday evenings from 4:45 to 6:45PM, Jan. 4 to March 1, 2007. The course is open at no cost to any student, alumni, or faculty or staff member of Dartmouth College, the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, and the Mary Hitchcock Hospital. Nieves is a patent attorney, whose practice focuses on many aspects of intellectual property, including domestic and foreign preparation and prosecution of patents, domestic and foreign preparation and prosecution of trademarks, licensing, and disputes concerning patents, trademarks, copyrights and domain names. He speaks regularly at Dartmouth College in the Tuck School of Business and the Thayer School of Engineering.

RatnerPrestia to Host January PDMA Program on Integrated Product Development
RatnerPrestia, one of the regions largest intellectual property law firms, will host the January program of the Product Development and Management Association (PDMA), Greater Philadelphia Chapter. The program will be held in RatnerPrestia's Valley Forge office on January 16, 2007 at 6pm with networking and light refreshments prior to the presentation at 7pm. Professor John B. Ochs, Ph.D. of Lehigh University will present "Lessons Learned in Implementing Integrated Product Development (IPD) between Academia and Industry." Professor Ochs will explain projects completed by Lehigh University's innovative Integrated Product Development (IPD) Program, describe the role of industry sponsors in the IPD Program, detail the infrastructure that supports the IPD Program, and present the lessons learned by the students and companies that participate in the IPD Program.

Morris, Manning & Martin Closes Complex Financial Transaction
Morris, Manning & Martin, LLP closed two complex credit facilities totaling $24 million for one of Georgia’s fastest-growing companies last month. The client was HSS Group, Inc., which is the leading provider of specialty service personnel to the hospitality industry. HSS has more than 2,500 employees nationwide. In 2005 and 2006, the Atlanta Business Chronicle counted its subsidiary, Hospitality Staffing Solutions, among the state’s top 10 fastest-growing companies.

Morris, Manning & Martin had previously represented the company; when a decision was made to recapitalize, the firm introduced HSS to Caymus Partners LLC. Caymus Partners became HSS’ exclusive financial advisor in the transaction “We were hopeful to get the transaction closed by year end, and Morris, Manning & Martin did a superb job dedicating significant resources to the transaction and efficiently guiding the process to a successful conclusion in a short period of time,” said Geoffrey Faux, Managing Partner of Caymus Partners. “They went through the process very efficiently.”

Attorneys who worked on the deal include Sandy Smith, Oby Brewer, Doug Selph, Cass Brewer, Chuck Beaudrot, Bernard Coleman, Travis Townsend, Lou Barbieri and Felicia LeRay.

Mintz Levin Advises Chiasma, Inc. in $44 Million Series C Financing
Mintz, Levin, Cohn, Ferris, Glovsky and Popeo, P.C. - a full-service, 480-lawyer AmLaw 100 firm with offices throughout the U.S. and in the U.K., announced that it represented Chiasma, Inc., in its $44 million Series C financing to fund clinical testing and develop technologies for the enhanced oral delivery of proteins and small molecules. The financing was led by MPM Capital, a global investment management firm focused solely on life sciences investing. Shibboleth served as Chiasma's Israeli counsel in the financing. Chiasma is a privately held company based in Boston, MA with a research subsidiary in Jerusalem, Israel.

The Mintz Levin attorneys representing Chiasma in the financing are Jeff Wiesen, Dean Zioze, and Tim Slavin of the Business and Finance Section.

Medicare Compliance Expert Lauren N. Haley Joins Mintz Levin's Growing Health Care Practice
Mintz, Levin, Cohn, Ferris, Glovsky and Popeo, P.C., a full-service, 480-lawyer AmLaw 100 firm with offices throughout the U.S. and in the U.K., announced that Lauren N. Haley, formerly a health insurance specialist at the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, has joined the firm's Health Sciences Section. She is based in Washington, D.C.

While at CMS, Ms. Haley, who joins as an associate, had responsibilities for program integrity efforts in connection with the implementation of the Medicare Prescription Drug Benefit and for the drafting of compliance plan provisions of the Title I Medicare Prescription Drug Benefit regulation. She served as a member of the technical panel that evaluated and made recommendations for awarding the eight Medicare Drug Integrity Contractors (MEDICs) and was responsible for conflict of interest analysis for MEDICs. Ms. Haley also co-authored chapter nine of the Prescription Drug Benefit Manual: A Program to Control Fraud, Waste and Abuse.

"Mintz Levin has continued to expand its premier, national health care practice, representing both for-profit and non-profit companies throughout the United States, and abroad," said Robert Clark, head of the firm's Health Sciences Section and a Member in the Washington, D.C. office. "Lauren's extensive government background and significant experience with a variety of complex legislative, regulatory and policy issues further strengthens the resources we are able to provide to clients. We are delighted to welcome her to the firm."

Prior to CMS, Ms. Haley served as Director of Government Relations for The National Association for the Support of Long Term Care where she represented the legislative and regulatory interests of companies providing ancillary services and product supply components to long-term care facilities. She was also responsible for analyzing, interpreting and submitting comments to Medicare regulations; analyzing and interpreting the Department of Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General fraud alerts, bulletins, and compliance guidance documents, among others; analyzing and interpreting proposed and passed Medicare legislation and counseling reimbursement managers in applying various CMS manual instructions.

Also joining Mintz Levin's Health Care practice this month is Andrew B. Roth, the former head of McDermott Will & Emery's New York health care practice. He represents hospital and managed care companies in a variety of matters including mergers and acquisitions and regulatory affairs. Mr. Roth also has a specialized practice representing medical schools and teaching hospitals in accreditation proceedings. David S. Ivill, also formerly of McDermott Will & Emery, also joined the firm. He focuses on representing health care facilities and physicians' practices. Nili Yolin, an associate, joins Mr. Roth and Mr. Ivill in the firm's New York office.

Ms. Haley is admitted to practice in Virginia and she is a member of The American Health Lawyers Association. A graduate of The University of Rochester, she earned a law degree from Seton Hall University Law School.

LeBoeuf Lamb Advises AXA Group on $1.71 billion Sale of Winterthur's U.S. Operations
LeBoeuf, Lamb, Greene & MacRae LLP is advising AXA Group and its wholly owned subsidiary Winterthur Swiss Insurance Company on the recently announced $1.71 billion sale by Winterthur of its U.S. operations to QBE Insurance Group. The transaction is subject to regulatory approval and is expected to close in the second quarter of 2007.

The LeBoeuf Lamb team advising on the transaction is led by corporate practice co-head Alexander M. Dye and includes New York-based associates Kirk D. Lipsey and Rajab S. Abbassi.

The firm's recent insurance merger and acquisition transactions of note also include Aviva plc's $2.9 billion acquisition of AmerUs Group Co. and Hannover Rückversicherung AG's $800 million sale of Praetorian Financial Group, Inc. to QBE Insurance Group Limited.
