Fish & Richardson hires Madeleine Johnson, former Dallas City Attorney
Former Dallas City Attorney Madeleine Johnson has joined the firm's Dallas office as a principal.

"A lot of firms have been trying to sign Madeleine since she decided to reenter private practice," says Tom Melsheimer, managing principal for Fish & Richardson in Dallas. "Her background at the city attorney's office, the U.S. Attorney, and the Texas Attorney General make her a perfect fit at our firm."

As city attorney, Ms. Johnson recorded the largest-ever civil recovery on behalf of the city. The $53 million settlement in Dallas' lawsuit against the U.S. Navy came less than a year after the claim was filed, and also resulted in the successful environmental cleanup of the Dallas Naval Air Station.

She also gained national notoriety for her tough stance against Ford Motor Co. over the company's Crown Victoria police vehicles. Although Ford officials initially denied any problems, Ms. Johnson helped show how the cars were susceptible to fires in rear-end collisions. Ford now provides fire-prevention packages on new models used by police forces nationwide.

Prior to being named the top attorney for the City of Dallas in 1999, Ms. Johnson spent five years as a federal prosecutor for the United States Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Texas in Dallas. Her work at the U.S. Attorney's Office was preceded by her serving as Division Chief for the Opinion Division for the Texas Attorney General's Office from 1991 to 1994.

Johnson is the latest local legal luminary to join Fish & Richardson in Dallas. Mr. Melsheimer, a former federal prosecutor, helped establish the Dallas office in 2000. Since then, the firm has added Paul Coggins, former U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Texas; and Bill Mateja, former Senior Counsel to the Deputy U.S. Attorney General.

At Fish & Richardson, Ms. Johnson primarily will practice commercial litigation, as well as handling matters involving white-collar defense and governmental investigations.

Fish & Richardson Lands Former Justice Department Corporate Fraud Chief
Fish & Richardson has strengthened its white-collar defense practice with the addition of former federal prosecutor Bill Mateja as a principal in the firm's Dallas and Washington, D.C. offices.

Mr. Mateja most recently served as Senior Counsel to Deputy Attorneys General Larry Thompson and James Comey in Washington, D.C. During his tenure at Main Justice, Mr. Mateja oversaw the Justice Department's corporate and health care fraud efforts, and served as the point person for President Bush's Corporate Fraud Task Force.

"Quite frankly, we're lucky to get Bill," said former United States Attorney and current Fish & Richardson principal Paul Coggins. "It's not everyday you get a chance to land one of the top white collar lawyers in the country and the person who ran the Justice Department's corporate and health care fraud efforts. Our clients will benefit greatly from the tremendous white collar background and experience that Bill brings to the table."

Mr. Mateja's legal background extends nearly 20 years, including 14 years as a federal prosecutor. Prior to becoming Senior Counsel to the Deputy Attorney General, Mr. Mateja was an Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Texas, where he prosecuted significant white collar cases from the Lubbock, Amarillo, Abilene and San Angelo offices.

"Ultimately, I chose Fish & Richardson so I could reunite with my old boss, Paul Coggins, and join what is arguably the best white collar defense practice in the Southwest," said Mr. Mateja. "I'm particularly looking forward to taking what I learned on the Corporate Fraud Task Force in coordinating massive white collar cases such as Enron, WorldCom, and HealthSouth, and using that experience to help my clients at Fish & Richardson."

Mr. Mateja's work at the firm will include assisting corporate clients in internal investigations, as well as defending clients in criminal cases and government regulatory and enforcement actions. He also will advise clients on compliance, enforcement, and Sarbanes-Oxley matters before the Securities and Exchange Commission.

With the addition of Mr. Mateja, Fish & Richardson's Dallas office is now home to five former federal prosecutors, including Tom Melsheimer, managing principal of the firm's Dallas office; and firm principals Mr. Coggins and John Helms.

"Our team of former prosecutors brings a wealth of legal knowledge and courtroom experience to every white-collar case," Mr. Melsheimer says. "The addition of Bill substantially strengthens our ability to be a go-to firm for white-collar defense.

BINGHAM MCCUTCHEN NAMED ONE OF FORTUNE’S “100 BEST COMPANIES TO WORK FOR” FOR THIRD CONSECUTIVE YEAR
Bingham McCutchen LLP has been named for the third straight year to FORTUNE magazine’s “100 Best Companies to Work For,” one of only five law firms nationally to make the list.
Bingham ranked No. 24 on the small-company list and No. 94 on the list of all 100 companies. Small companies are classified as those with 1,000 to 2,500 employees. Bingham has approximately 2,150 employees, including 950 attorneys, in 12 offices worldwide.
“This prestigious recognition puts us in the top tier of not only law firms, but all leading companies in the United States,” said Bingham Chairman Jay S. Zimmerman. “To be named to the list three years in a row is truly a major accomplishment, and it reflects the invaluable contributions our attorneys and staff make to the firm and our culture. It also underscores our core values: respect for one another through collaboration and teamwork; passion for excellence in our work; and commitment to our clients, to our firm, to our profession and to our community.”
FORTUNE noted Bingham’s growth and its commitment to diversity as key factors in its selection to the list. In 2006 alone, Bingham merged with the Washington-based Swidler Berlin and announced the addition of the 22-lawyer Tokyo firm Sakai & Mimura. It also announced in November 2006 the opening of a Hong Kong office.
“The Boston law firm has tripled in size in five years thanks to mergers,” according to FORTUNE. “Women outnumber men 2-to-1 at Bingham, and make up 23 percent of partner ranks, believed to be the highest percentage in the industry.”
Women make up 65 percent of Bingham’s workforce. The firm was also recognized for the number of minority employees, average pay and average bonus pay.
