New Attorney Strengthens Firm’s Appellate, Class & Derivative Actions Groups
John Mark Thomas has joined the international law firm Bryan Cave LLP as of counsel in the firm’s Chicago office. Thomas joins Bryan Cave from the Ford Motor Company, where he served as counsel for special litigation since 1979. Thomas will join the firm’s Class & Derivative Actions Group, as well as its Appellate Group.

“John Mark Thomas joining Bryan Cave marks another important addition to our rapidly expanding Chicago office,” said Jeffrey W. Morof, managing partner of the Chicago office. “Thomas’ extensive experience in handling complex litigation and appeals will be a tremendous asset to the firm, and adds a new dimension to our Class and Derivative Actions Group, as well as our product liability and appellate expertise.”

Bryan Cave established its Chicago office at 161 N. Clark St. in 2001. In 2005, the firm doubled the size of the office to 40,000 square feet. Today, a growing team of more than 40 experienced attorneys serves clients in commercial litigation, health care litigation and counseling, banking and business finance, corporate transactions, labor and employment and product liability litigation.

While at Ford Motor Company, Thomas briefed and argued appeals in courts throughout the country, including the Supreme Courts of Michigan and Virginia. He was responsible for Ford’s class action and other complex litigation and supervised some of the most significant automotive class action trials in recent years, such as the Crown Victoria Police Interceptor class action tried to a defense verdict by a team that also included Bryan Cave attorneys Dan Ball and Peter Herzog. He is credited with developing Ford’s “advanced motions program,” which is designed to influence the long-term development of product liability law.

Thomas co-founded the Product Liability Advisory Council, the leading national organization filing amicus briefs in significant product liability cases, and served as its chair until 1988. Currently, he serves as a member of the council’s Case Selection Committee.

Thomas received his J.D. in 1977 from the University of Pittsburgh and his B.A. in 1973 from the University of Michigan.
