Walter L. Buzanowski Joins Dickinson Wright in Lansing
Dickinson Wright PLLC is pleased to announce that Walter L. Buzanowski has joined the firm's Lansing office as an Associate. His primary area of practice emphasis is commercial and business litigation.

Before joining Dickinson Wright, Mr. Buzanowski was an Associate at the law firm of Kaplan, von Ohlen and Massamillo in Chicago, where he gained experience in aviation litigation.

He holds a B.A. degree from the University of Michigan. He received a J.D. degree, summa cum laude, from DePaul University College of Law, where he was a member of the Order of the Coif, the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society and the DePaul Law Review.

Ryan K. Mulally Becomes Dickinson Wright's Newest Member
Dickinson Wright PLLC is pleased to announce that Ryan K. Mulally, previously an Associate in the Firm's Detroit office, has been named a Member of the Firm. He remains based in the Detroit office. His primary area of practice emphasis is labor and employment relations.

Mr. Mulally holds a B.S. degree with high honors from Michigan State University. He received a J.D. degree, cum laude, from Wayne State University Law School, where he was a member of the Order of the Coif, the Golden Key National Honor Society, and the Wayne State University School Law Review. He also served as an intern for the Michigan House of Representatives Committee on Urban Affairs.

He is a member of the Labor and Employment Law Sections of the American Bar Association and the Michigan State Bar Association.

Dechert Elects Angelo Lercara National Partner
Angelo Lercara, a member of Dechert's renowned financial services practice, has been elected a National Partner of the firm, according to Federico Pappalardo, head of Dechert's Munich office where Lercara is based.

Dechert is considered one of the world's leading law firms advising mutual funds, hedge funds, investment companies, and banks on the regulatory and transactional aspects of their ventures.

"As new investment products proliferate in Europe, and as global companies draw more investment capital from European investors, Angelo's deep knowledge of European regulation and financial products is essential to our service offering. He's an integral member of our global financial services team," said Peter Astleford, co-chair of Dechert's financial services practice.

Lercara, who is fluent in German, Italian, French and English, is a graduate of the Universität des Saarlandes (Germany), 1997 and the Università degli Studi in Torino (Italy), 1996. He has an LL.M. EuR from the Europa Institut, Saarbrücken (Germany), 1999.

Dechert Paris Advises Lead Investor on Euro 50 Million Fundraising for Novexel
The Paris office of international law firm Dechert LLP advised Edmond de Rothschild Investment Partners as lead investor on the recent Euro 50 million fundraising by French specialty pharmaceutical company, Novexel. The round was led by Edmond de Rothschild Investment Partners of Paris and included participation from all Novexel's existing investors (Atlas Venture, Sofinnova, Abingworth, 3i, Novo A/S and BIT), as well as other new investors, Goldman Sachs, NeoMed and NIF SMBC (Tokyo). The funding is the largest raised by a private European company in this sector in the last twelve months.

The Dechert team was led by the Life Sciences investment specialists Jonathan Schur and Emmanuelle Trombe.

Jonathan Schur, co-managing partner at Dechert Paris said: "This transaction, which we were able to bring from a term sheet to funding in record time, shows the depth of our resources in financial transactions for life sciences companies.

Dechert Elects Two New National Partners in Paris
Dechert LLP announced last Friday that Ermine Bolot-Massé and Emmanuelle Trombe have been elected National Partners in the firm's Paris office.

Ermine Bolot-Massé has significant experience in M&A transactions and corporate and general commercial law. She advises international clients doing business in France, as well as providing assistance to French clients in international and French operations. Ms. Bolot-Massé has developed a particular expertise in assisting clients implement their projects in emerging markets.

Ms. Bolot-Massé is admitted to the Paris Bar and is fluent in French, English, and German. She is a graduate of the University of Paris I, Sorbonne (DEA, International Private and Business Law, 1993), the University of Paris II, Assas (DEA, EU Laws, 1993), and New York University (LL.M., 1994).

Emmanuelle Trombe practices corporate and general commercial law with a focus on pharmaceutical, medical device and healthcare industries. She has also gained significant experience in both France and in the U.S. assisting clients with major international projects.

Besides French, her native language, Ms. Trombe is fluent in English, Spanish and Italian. She graduated from the Ecole Supérieure de Commerce de Paris and holds a Maîtrise in commercial and tax law from the University of Paris II, Assas. She also received a AMSEC Master from the Universidad Complutense in Madrid, Spain. Ms Trombe is admitted to the Paris Bar.

Clark Hill PLC Attorney Barbara A. Ruga to Present at Michigan Negotiators Association 2007 Mini Conferences
Clark Hill attorney Barbara A. Ruga will present at the 2007 Michigan Negotiators Association Mini Conferences this winter. The topics Ruga will cover include “Employee Evaluations: Teachers and Support Staff,” and “Employee Discipline: Progressive and Last Chance and More.”

The mini conferences will take place on January 23 in Kent County, February 6 in Genesee County, February 13 in Cheboygan-Otsego-Presque Isle Counties, February 15 in Macomb County and February 27 in Ingham County. The program series is designed for board members, supervisors, chief negotiators, principals, and all administrators whose job it is to supervise, evaluate or discipline employees. The cost to attend is $20 for MNA Members and $30 for nonmembers. The programs begin at 9:00 a.m. and additional information, including location, is available from Richard Higginbotham at rhigg3@comcast.net.

Ruga has been practicing law for nearly 30 years in the areas of education, labor relations and employment law. She predominantly represents public school districts in a wide range of employment and school law matters, and frequently lectures to public school districts on employment matters.

Ruga has published several books and articles in the field of employment law, including articles in the Michigan Council of School Attorneys Newsletter. She was the co-editor and author of “Michigan Wrongful Discharge and Employment Discrimination,” (ICLE, 1990-1994) and “Wrongful Discharge Cases in Michigan,” (1984 and 1987 editions).

Ruga has been active locally on bar association committees, professional, charitable and local governmental projects.

Ruga earned her J.D. and B.A., cum laude, from the University of Michigan.

Brinks Hofer Gilson & Lione Reaches Settlement for MarcTec LLC; Effingham-based Company to Receive $2.75 Million and Future Royalties
Brinks Hofer Gilson & Lione, one of the largest intellectual property law firms in the United States, today announced that its client, MarcTec LLC, based in Effingham, IL, reached a settlement with California-based ArthroCare Corp. in a patent lawsuit involving 10 patents related to suture anchors used in rotator cuff surgery and other arthroscopic procedures.

“Although I am unable to disclose the complete details of the settlement, ArthroCare will pay MarcTec $2.75 million plus future royalties related to the licensing of certain MarcTec patents,” said Ralph J. Gabric, an attorney at Brinks who represented MarcTec.

MarcTec is controlled by its founder, Dr. Peter Bonutti, an orthopedic surgeon, inventor and business developer. Dr. Bonutti is a pioneer in Minimally Invasive Total Knee Replacement and holds nearly 200 patents on orthopedic devices, implants and instrumentation.

In its complaint, MarcTec asked the court to declare that its patents are valid, enforceable and infringed, and requested a permanent injunction to stop the manufacture and sale of the infringing product, as well as damages, attorneys’ fees and costs.

Brinks attorneys Ralph J. Gabric and Richard D. Watkins represented MarcTec LLC in cooperation with attorneys from Hepler, Broom, MacDonald, Hebrank, True & Noce LLP in Edwardsville, IL. Attorneys Fredric D. Tannenbaum of Gould & Ratner in Chicago and Paul Bianco of Fleit, Kain, Gibbons, Gutman, Bongini & Bianco P.L. in Miami assisted with the negotiations of the licensing agreement.
