Dorsey & Whitney Continues Leading M&A Ranking Among Law Firms
Dorsey & Whitney LLP ranked third among U.S. law firms for the number of domestic merger and acquisition (M&A) deals completed during 2006, according to Thomson Financial. Since Thomson began publishing law firm M&A rankings in 1994, Dorsey has ranked first, second or third in the number of U.S. deals completed annually. Globally, Dorsey ranked ninth for the number of deals completed in 2006, up from 13th in 2005.

In the Canadian transaction category, Dorsey handled more deals involving a Canadian party than any other U.S.-based law firm during 2006. Dorsey ranked eighth among all Canadian and U.S. firms in aggregate dollar value of deals involving a Canadian party during 2006.

The number of Dorsey U.S. deals increased to 174 in 2006, compared with 167 transactions completed during 2005. Globally, the number of Dorsey deals increased from 205 to 243. The value of Dorsey U.S. deals increased from $13 billion in 2005 to $33 billion in 2006. The value of Dorsey deals completed worldwide increased from $19.5 billion to almost $54 billion.

"In 2006, we saw continued robust M&A activity balanced across sectors by both financial and strategic buyers we represent," said Dorsey partner Matthew J. Knopf, chair of the firm’s M&A practice. “Access to private equity and hedge fund capital by financial buyers, together with corporate buyers looking for strategic acquisitions, continued to fuel a seller's market, a trend we expect to continue through at least the first half of 2007. We also saw a significant increase in our traditionally strong cross-border Canada M&A practice in 2006.
