Adams and Reese Named Among "Best Places to Work in Mississippi”
For the second year in a row, the Jackson office of Adams and Reese has been named one of the “Best Places to Work in Mississippi” by the Mississippi Business Journal. The firm was honored at a luncheon on January 17, 2007, during the annual Mississippi Business and Technology Expo.

“At Adams and Reese, we try to be more than just a firm—we strive to be a family,” says Jerry Sheldon, Partner in Charge of the Jackson office. “All of us have a deep respect for one another and are concerned with one another’s well-being. Our employees' pleasant and productive attitudes greatly enhance our workplace and contribute greatly to the overall success of the firm. This award is well-deserved recognition for an outstanding, hardworking and compassionate group of individuals that I, personally, am proud to be associated with.”

Adams and Reese, ranked among the medium-sized companies, was selected because of its employees’ sense of satisfaction, empowerment and loyalty. Additionally, employees noted that the office environment is challenging, rewarding and positive, and that the firm greatly contributes to the betterment of the community, as well as the economic growth of the city and state.

In 2006, Adams and Reese offices in New Orleans and Birmingham also received “Best Places to Work” recognition. Aside from the results of an employee survey, factors that influenced the firm's ranking were such benefits as competitive salaries, maternity and day-care options, health benefits, 401(k) and profit sharing plans and employee recognition programs. The opportunity to participate in the firm’s award-winning corporate philanthropy program, HUGS, as well as its official pro bono program, CA&RE, also weighed in heavily to make Adams and Reese one the top employer-friendly companies.

Adams and Reese proudly embraces a supportive, nurturing and family-like environment among its employees, while maintaining a high standard of professionalism and client service.

Merril Hirsh Testifies Before The Senate Judiciary Committee On Paying Off Generics To Prevent Competition With Brand Name Drugs
Merril Hirsh, a partner in the Washington, DC office of Ross, Dixon & Bell, LLP, testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee on the proposed Preserve Access to the Affordable Generics Act. The topic of the hearing was “Paying Off Generics to Prevent Competition with Brand Name Drugs: Should it Be Prohibited?”

Hirsh told the panel that “a bright line rule preventing reverse payment settlements is the simplest, most efficient and fairest solution to the patent lawsuit issue raised by the Hatch-Waxman Act and promotes the central purposes of the Hatch-Waxman Act to foster both drug innovation and reasonable prices. If reverse payment settlements are permitted, brand and generic drug companies face a powerful – indeed, in some cases, overwhelming – incentive to use the huge monopoly rent earned by the exclusive rights to sell some of the most profitable drugs in history to buy off competition and to avoid challenges to weak patent positions. The proposed legislation would instead create an incentive to achieve a result that fairly reflects the power of the patent position.”

Bloomberg News reported on Mr. Hirsh’s testimony, which has been covered in the Winston-Salem Journal among others.

Bloomberg news reported that, “Such payments ‘are not the only way to settle a case,’ Merril Hirsh, an antitrust lawyer who has represented consumer groups in challenging the settlements, told the panel. ‘A delay in some of these drugs involves a million dollars a day in sales for each day a generic is excluded from the market.
