The Morrison & Foerster Foundation Announces Special Million Dollar Grant For Children and At Risk Youth
The Morrison & Foerster Foundation is pleased to announce grants totaling $1,000,000 to four nonprofit organizations across the country, over and above its customary giving. The organizations and projects chosen for the most recent special grants are: Public Counsel (Los Angeles), Inwood House (New York), Seven Tepees (San Francisco), and the Colorado I Have A Dream Foundation (Denver).

All four of the projects chosen for these unique grants seek to address critical, unmet needs of children and youth by supporting the creation of innovative projects with the potential for significant, lasting impact. The projects will serve their target communities by: advocating on behalf of foster children with severe developmental disabilities in Los Angeles County to obtain services to which they are legally entitled (Public Counsel); creating a computer-based family literacy program for pregnant and parenting teens in the South Bronx (Inwood House); developing and sharing a program to teach life-readiness skills, job training and college/career advising to at-risk teens in San Francisco (Seven Tepees); and establishing a long-term intervention program to provide tutoring, life skills training and adult support to at-risk inner-city youth in Denver (Colorado I Have A Dream).

Paul T. Friedman, a San Francisco litigation partner who chairs the Foundation, said, “Morrison & Foerster has long been deeply involved with philanthropic activities in the communities in which we live and practice. The Foundation is an important part of our firm, and it speaks volumes about the people and culture of Morrison & Foerster.”

The Foundation sought recommendations from throughout the firm for these grants, which represent some of the largest awards in its history. Nearly 90 nominations came from attorneys and staff in every domestic office, and overseas, many of whom are personally involved in these non-profits. The Foundation’s board of directors, consisting of a partner from each of the firm’s domestic regions, reviewed each proposal and unanimously selected the four recipients.

Public Counsel (www.publiccounsel.org) received a $300,000 grant from the Foundation. The grant will be used to create a Developmentally Disabled Child Advocacy Program to address the critical and unmet needs of Los Angeles County children with severe developmental disabilities who either are in the foster care system or have been adopted out of the system. “Public Counsel is extremely thankful to The Morrison & Foerster Foundation for its magnificent support,” said Dan Grunfeld, President/CEO of Public Counsel in Los Angeles, “This extraordinary grant is philanthropy at its best: it will allow us to serve some of the most critically needy and vulnerable children in our society, developmentally disabled foster children.”

Inwood House (www.inwoodhouse.com) received a $250,000 grant from the Foundation. These funds will allow Inwood House to create a computer-based Family Literacy Expansion Project, Family UniverCITY, at the organization’s Teen Family Services Center for pregnant and parenting teens in the South Bronx, as part of its mission to help teens take charge of their lives and become healthy and self-reliant adults. “Inwood House is thrilled to be able to bring new services to the young families of the South Bronx,” said the grant recipient’s Executive Director, Linda Lausell Bryant. “Our teen parents aspire to build a better life for their children, and the key to their success is education. With this Morrison & Foerster Foundation grant, Inwood House will strengthen teen parents’ ability to place learning at the center of family life.”

Seven Tepees (www.7tepees.org) received a $250,000 grant from the Foundation. The grant will allow them to develop a pilot program of teaching life-readiness skills, job training and college/career advising to at-risk teens in San Francisco, and to expand this model for transitioning youth to adulthood by providing consulting and direct services at local public schools. “With a new grant from The Morrison & Foerster Foundation, Seven Tepees aims to expand its college and career guidance program to address a grave need of high school students in San Francisco’s Mission District,” said the grant recipient’s Executive Director, Diane Dodge. “In collaboration with university counseling training programs, Seven Tepees will provide local high schools a seasoned curriculum, career counseling interns, and a plethora of services on school sites including parent and teacher trainings and career fairs for high school juniors and seniors.”

Colorado I Have A Dream Foundation (www.cihadf.org) received a $200,000 grant from the Foundation. These funds will allow the organization to “adopt” a specific group of at-risk students in a Denver school, providing them with the necessary academic and social support throughout grades 3-12 to enable every member of the group to succeed in life and graduate from high school. The program will also separately raise funds to provide academic or vocational scholarships for each student. Former Colorado I Have A Dream Foundation board president Steve Kaplan, who heads the initiative to start more I Have A Dream classes in Denver, noted: “This significant grant provides the Colorado I Have A Dream Foundation with the opportunity to serve an additional 50 children who otherwise would face the likely prospects of significant gang activity, early pregnancy, and dropping out of school. The Morrison & Foerster Foundation’s leadership in our community will inspire many others to support at-risk youth.”

This is the second time that the Foundation has conducted a million-dollar special grant program based on project recommendations by Morrison & Foerster personnel. In 2004, following a similar call for nominations, the Foundation announced that it had selected five nonprofits to share a million-dollar fund. As with the latest set of special grant recipients, those projects focused on serving disadvantaged children and youth in some of the regions where the firm has offices.

Loeb & Loeb’s Chief Information Officer Named ‘IT Director of the Year’
Law Technology News® has named Judi Flournoy, Loeb & Loeb LLP’s Chief Information Officer, the “IT Director of the Year” for 2006.

The award will be presented at the fourth annual Technology Awards, where the magazine recognizes leaders in the field for both innovation and implementation. Nominations were accepted from law firms nationwide for significant achievements in technology, and winners were chosen by a panel of technology experts. The awards will be presented at the LTN Technology Awards Dinner, at LegalTech New York on January 29, 2007.

“Judi set high standards for herself and the IT Department from the day she joined the firm,” said Jerry Post, Loeb & Loeb’s Chief Operating Officer. “She finds solutions to some of the most difficult tech issues we face in providing legal services. Judi also has a rare ability to sell her innovative ideas to lawyers.”

Flournoy joined Loeb & Loeb in June of 2004 and faced an immediate challenge – how to better repurpose the same legal document content used over and over again by the attorneys, staff and clients. Thanks to Flournoy and Loeb’s Technology Department – ‘Loeb Technology Services’ - (a department Judi reengineered when she joined the firm), in June 2006 the firm became an early adopter of an innovative software program, which significantly advances the creation and sharing of work product. They trained the entire firm including 17 new lateral hires who joined just as the new program was rolled out.

The second thing Flournoy’s LTS Department accomplished in 2006 was to switch the firm to a secure instant messaging system called Microsoft Live Communication Server.

“Our fourth annual Law Technology News® Awards recognize the achievements of law firms and law departments in the use of innovative technologies. Today's law firms and legal departments face unprecedented pressures to deliver faster, better and cheaper services. These leaders all have demonstrated creativity, determination and spirit in meeting those goals,” said Monica Bay, editor in chief of Law Technology News®.

Flournoy is on the Editorial Advisory Board for Law Tech News. She is the current president and on the Board of Directors of ILTA (International Legal Technology Association).
