Iian Jablon and Jason Sheasby, litigators in Irell & Manella LLP’s Century City office, have been elected as partners.
Iian Jablon is a member of the professional liability defense, white collar defense, and intellectual property litigation practice groups. He focuses on complex business disputes in state and federal courts, and has represented clients in a broad range of industries in matters involving alleged legal malpractice, tax and securities fraud, trade secrets, business contracts, patent infringement, bankruptcy, and employment issues. Mr. Jablon received his J.D. in 1999 from USC, where he graduated first in his class, was elected to the Order of the Coif, and served as a Notes Editor for the Southern California Law Review. Prior to joining Irell & Manella, Mr. Jablon served as a law clerk to the Honorable Arthur Alarcon, United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, and to the Honorable Edward Rafeedie, United States District Court for the Central District. Mr. Jablon received his B.A. in 1994 from UC Berkeley, where he majored in Classical Civilization.

Jason Sheasby is a member of the intellectual property litigation and patent, copyright, and trademark practice groups. He focuses on complex patent and other intellectual property disputes, intellectual property licensing, and regulatory compliance counseling in the health sciences field. He has represented clients in a broad range of industries, including the biopharmaceutical and semiconductor industries, in addition to leading non-profit research institutions. Mr. Sheasby received his J.D. in 1999 from the Harvard Law School, where he graduated cum laude. Mr. Sheasby received his B.A. summa cum laude in Philosophy from Pomona College.

Joanne L. Lashey Named Human Resources Professional of the Year for Professional Excellence
The law firm of Henderson Franklin is pleased to announce that Joanne L. Lashey, Human Resources Manager of Henderson Franklin, was recently named the 2006 Human Resources Professional of the Year by the 200 member Human Resource Management Association (HRMA) of Southwest Florida. Lashey, who was recognized for professional excellence, was noted for serving as a mentor, as well as for bringing professionalism and dedication to the position of President during her recent term. She was also noted as a well-respected source of information, having authored various human resource-related articles.

Lashey has been a member of HRMA of Southwest Florida for eight years. In addition to serving as President of the organization in 2004, she served as President-elect and Program Chair in 2003, and Treasurer in 2002.
Additionally, Lashey has been involved with the Human Resource profession for seventeen years and is certified as a Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR). She has been with the law firm of Henderson Franklin for eight years.

Henderson Franklin Announces New Stockholders
The law firm of Henderson Franklin is pleased to announce that David H. Roos and Bruce E. Sands have become Stockholders with the firm. Both of these attorneys have earned a reputation for providing excellent work on behalf of the firm's clients.
Roos represents carriers and employers in workers' compensation defense. Prior to joining Henderson Franklin, he practiced in Broward and Miami-Dade counties, representing insurance companies involving first-party homeowner property and casualty defense claims. Sands' primary areas of practice include real estate transactions, business law and lender law. He is a member of Rotary International and was a participant of the Fall 2006 Leadership Lee County class.

Heller Ehrman Names Twelve New Shareholders
Heller Ehrman LLP announced the election of twelve attorneys to the position of shareholder, effective January 1.

“Each member of this year’s class of new shareholders has consistently demonstrated a high degree of excellence, professionalism and skill in the work they’ve done for clients,” said Matthew Larrabee, the firm’s chairman. “They also have shown a commitment to the firm’s core values and have been active in growing and strengthening our firm.”

The 2007 class includes Rima J. Alaily (Seattle, Antitrust & Trade Regulation); Aaron M. Armstrong (San Francisco, Antitrust & Trade Regulation); Leo S. Batalov (Seattle, Structured Finance and Corporate/VLG); Michael Burnstein (San Francisco, Tax and Estate Planning); Megan Dixon (San Francisco, White Collar Criminal Defense); Chad R. Fuller (San Diego, Litigation); Heidi Maley Gutierrez (San Diego, IP Litigation); Marcia A. Hatch (Silicon Valley, Corporate/VLG); David E. Below are brief biographies for members of the 2007 class:

Rima J. Alaily joined the firm’s Seattle office in 1999 and is a member of the Antitrust & Trade Regulation Practice Group. Ms. Alaily practices principally in the areas of antitrust and complex commercial litigation, including class actions. She has represented Microsoft, Visa, and Texas Instruments in antitrust litigation. Ms. Alaily also devotes a significant portion of her practice to the pro bono representation of persons in need in family law cases involving domestic violence and child custody issues. Prior to joining Heller Ehrman, Ms. Alaily was a law clerk to the Honorable Robert L. Eastaugh of the Alaska Supreme Court in Anchorage. She received a B.A., magna cum laude, from Brown University and obtained a J.D., cum laude, from Harvard Law School.

Aaron M. Armstrong joined the firm’s San Francisco office in 1998 and is a member of the Antitrust & Trade Regulation Practice Group. His practice focuses on class action defense in a variety of areas including antitrust, unfair competition, securities litigation, products liability and consumer protection law. Prior to joining Heller Ehrman, Mr. Armstrong completed a judicial externship with the Honorable Fern M. Smith of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California. He received a B.A., with honors, from the University of California, Santa Barbara and a J.D., magna cum laude, from the University of California, Hastings College of Law, where he was elected Order of the Coif.

Leo S. Batalov joined the firm’s Seattle office in 1999 and is a member of the Structured Finance and Corporate/VLG Practice Groups. Mr. Batalov’s practice includes asset securitization, secured lending, mergers and acquisitions, securities law and general corporate matters with an emphasis on representing issuers, underwriters, purchasers and servicers in public and private offerings of mortgage-backed and asset-backed securities. He received a B.S. from the Ural Polytechnic Institute, a B.A., summa cum laude, from Whitman College and a J.D. from the University of Washington, where he was elected Order of the Coif.

Michael Burnstein joined the firm’s San Francisco office in 2003 and is a member of the Tax and Estate Planning Practice Group. Mr. Burnstein’s practice emphasizes wealth management and charitable giving. He received a B.S. from St. John’s University, an M.B.A. from St. John's College of Business and a J.D. from St. John’s University School of Law. He later received an LL.M. in Taxation from New York University School of Law. Mr. Burnstein is a former U.S. Tax Court attorney-advisor (1995-1997).

Megan Dixon joined the firm’s San Francisco office in 2004 and practices complex criminal and civil litigation with an emphasis on white collar crime and antitrust issues. Her practice focuses on internal corporate investigations and criminal antitrust matters, including cartel defense. Ms. Dixon worked as a full-time faculty lecturer at Harvard Law School for three years and is a former law clerk to the Honorable William M. Hoeveler of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida. She received a B.A., with honors, from Stanford University and a J.D. from the University of California, Berkeley, Boalt Hall School of Law.

Chad R. Fuller joined the firm’s San Diego office in 1999. He has a complex dispute resolution practice with an emphasis on commercial litigation in various business sectors. He is experienced in class action defense, commercial arbitration and complex litigation, including the defense of class actions brought under the California’s unfair competition laws. Mr. Fuller is a former judicial extern to the Honorable Napoleon A. Jones, Jr., of the U.S. District Court for San Diego. He received a B.A. from the University of California, San Diego and a J.D. from the University of San Diego School of Law.

Heidi Maley Gutierrez joined the firm’s San Diego office in 1999 and has a practice emphasizing intellectual property, business and commercial litigation. Ms. Gutierrez has extensive pre-trial and trial experience focusing on patent infringement and trade secret litigation, largely on behalf of high-tech companies. Before beginning her career in law, Ms. Gutierrez served seven years in the U.S. Navy as a Surface Warfare Officer. She received a B.S. from the United States Naval Academy, Annapolis and a J.D. from the University of San Diego School of Law.

Marcia A. Hatch joined the firm’s Silicon Valley office in 2003 and is a member of the Corporate/VLG Practice Group. Ms. Hatch’s practice includes securities offerings, mergers and acquisitions, and corporate governance. She works extensively with both public and private entities, focusing primarily on emerging growth, technology and biotech companies. Ms. Hatch also represents venture capital funds as investors’ counsel. She received a B.A., with honors, from the University of California, Berkeley and a J.D. from the University of Michigan Law School.

David E. Jones joined the firm’s Madison, Wis. office in 2001 and practices complex commercial litigation. He has worked primarily on antitrust and intellectual property matters for clients such as Microsoft, Visa, General Electric, Texas Instruments, and QUALCOMM. Mr. Jones has also maintained an active pro bono practice, including service as co-counsel with the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights in a class action brought to secure fair housing rights. Prior to joining the firm, Mr. Jones clerked for the Honorable David B. Sentelle of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, served as an Assistant U.S. Attorney, and was on active duty in the Army General Counsel’s Honors Program. He received a B.S., with honors, from Creighton University and a J.D., with honors, from Creighton Law School.

Sheryl Miller joined the firm's San Francisco office in 2001 and is a member of the Corporate/VLG Practice Group. In her practice, Ms. Miller focuses on transactions involving mergers and acquisitions, public and private equity offerings, debt financings and general business transactions. She represents clients in various sectors, including banking, private equity, venture capital, life sciences and internet/software development. Ms. Miller also has extensive international business transactions and investment experience. She received a B.A. from Wittenberg University, summa cum laude, and a J.D., with highest honors, from the University of Washington.

Michelle M. Umberger joined the firm’s Madison, Wis. office in 2001. Her practice focuses on all aspects of intellectual property litigation, with an emphasis on biotechnology-related patent litigation, an area in which she has taken master’s-level coursework in microbiology at the University of Wisconsin. She has assisted in representing major national and international clients, such as MorophoSys AG and the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation (WARF). She received a B.S., magna cum laude, from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse and obtained a J.D., cum laude, from the University of Wisconsin Law School, where she was elected Order of the Coif.

Mavis L. Yee joined the firm’s Silicon Valley office in 2003 and is a member of the Corporate/VLG Practice. In her practice, Ms. Yee focuses on general corporate representation of emerging technology companies and public companies. She has represented clients in financing transactions, public and private securities offerings, venture capital funds and mergers and acquisitions. Prior to her legal career, Ms. Yee was a special investigator with the California State Legislature’s Office of the Auditor General. She received a B.A. from the University of California, Davis, an M.B.A from the University of California, Irvine, and a J.D., cum laude, from the University of California, Hastings College of Law.

J. Caleb Boggs III Elected President of Republican National Lawyers Association
Blank Rome is pleased to announce that Partner J. Caleb Boggs III (“J.C.”) has been unanimously elected to serve as President of the Republican National Lawyers Association (“RNLA”). Mr. Boggs succeeds RNLA President Harvey Tettlebaum of Missouri.

Buchholz, Managing Partner and Chief Executive Officer. “We are certain that J.C.’s unique experience in law and public service and commitment to his work will serve as a tremendous asset to the Association.”

Mr. Boggs has held leadership positions with the RNLA since 2000, having served as Chairman of the D.C. Operations Committee and RNLA First Vice President. As RNLA President, Mr. Boggs will lead the Association in carrying out its primary missions of advancing attorney professionalism, seeking open, fair and honest elections, providing opportunities for its membership and building on Republican Party goals. The RNLA is the principal national organization of Republican lawyers comprised of more than 3,000 lawyer-professionals from across the United States.
“I am honored to have the opportunity to take on this important leadership position, and by the trust that my colleagues have placed in me,” said Mr. Boggs. “The strength of the RNLA is its talented members and I look forward to working with them to make a positive difference for our country’s electoral and judicial systems.”

Outgoing President Harvey Tettlebaum remarked that, “J.C. has proven himself a leader among Republican lawyers and has gained the respect of both his colleagues and his counterparts on the other side of the political aisle. With his fine intellect, energy and experience, the Republican National Lawyers Association will continue to grow in both numbers and importance.”

A Partner with the law firm of Blank Rome LLP, Mr. Boggs concentrates his practice in government law, public policy and legislative and regulatory representation. He maintains offices in Washington, D.C. and Wilmington, Delaware.

Mr. Boggs served as Delaware Chairman, Lawyers for Bush-Cheney '04 and was part of the Florida recount team during the 2000 Presidential election.
He previously served as Republican counsel to the United States Senate Committee on Governmental Affairs and has advised numerous candidates for state and federal elective office, including several Presidential campaigns. Admitted to practice in Washington, D.C. and Delaware, Mr. Boggs received his Juris Doctor from The Catholic University of America and his Master of Business Administration from Georgetown University. Mr. Boggs also holds a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Richmond.

RIDE ’EM, COUNSELOR!! GUNSTER YOAKLEY’S JIM DAVIS PARTICIPATES FOR 10th TIME IN ANNUAL TOYS FOR TOTS MOTORCYCLE RUN
The annual “Toys for Tots Bike Run” was once again a huge success. The event, which attracted some 33,000 motorcyclists, closed the streets of Broward County en route from Pompano Harness Track to Markham Park. Participating in the lead group was Jim Davis, shareholder at the firm of Gunster Yoakley, who has traveled this road for the past 10 years.

“It’s a tradition to be a part of this annual bike run,” said Davis, who rides a Harley Davidson Dyna Wide Glide. “The cause is a great one – being able to help gather toys during the holidays for the millions of children who live in poverty. But equally important is the fun, the camaraderie and the sheer joy of riding with 33,000 other bike enthusiasts every year.”

Of late, Davis has been part of the VIP group that rides ahead of the pack. He says that the run is a magnet for bike owners throughout the tri-county area. “Doctors, attorneys CEOs, entrepreneurs, teachers, real estate professionals, construction workers – people from all walks of life – come out for this event. People are often surprised to see who rides a bike!” he noted.

Davis, based in Fort Lauderdale, is a member of the firm’s Corporate Department.

Toys for Tots is a 59-year tradition of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves and is an IRS recognized 501(c)(3) not-for-profit public charity.

GUNSTER YOAKLEY AT TORNEY HONORED WITH PRESTIGIOUS N.Y. AWARD FOR PRO-BONO WORK
Robert H. Friedman, a litigation attorney with Gunster, Yoakley & Stewart, P.A. in West Palm Beach, recently received the prestigious 2006 Cornerstone Award by Lawyers Alliance for New York. The annual award recognizes his significant pro bono efforts for The Bridge, Inc., a non-profit organization that provides housing and mental health services to adults with serious mental illnesses. Friedman donated hundreds of hours of his time and expertise in the area of insurance coverage law to secure nearly $1 million in insurance proceeds for The Bridge so the organization could rebuild an apartment complex in the Bronx that was nearly destroyed by fire and vandalism.

The Cornerstone Award honors attorneys who provide outstanding contributions in pro bono legal service, helping to improve the quality of life for thousands of low-income and disadvantaged New York residents. The 2006 awards ceremony was held in mid-December in New York City. In addition to Friedman, Lawyers Alliance presented Cornerstone Awards to 10 lawyers and two law firms, DLA Piper and Goodwin Proctor.

Friedman concentrates his practice in insurance law and complex commercial litigation, and is one of the few attorneys in Florida who represents corporate policyholders in disputes with their insurance companies. Prior to joining Gunster, Yoakley & Stewart in August 2006, he practiced in the New York office of Dickstein Shapiro LLP, recognized as a national leader in the area of policyholder-side insurance coverage work. Prior to joining Dickstein Shapiro, Friedman served as a law clerk to the Honorable Naomi Reice Buchwald of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York. He graduated cum laude from Harvard Law School in 1998.
