STEWART NAMED A TOP AFRICAN AMERICAN LAWYER TO WATCH
Vorys, Sater, Seymour and Pease LLP is pleased to announce that Carter Stewart has recently been named as one of the “10 Up-and-Coming African American Lawyers to Watch ” by the Minority Corporate Counsel Association.

The Minority Corporate Counsel Association (MCCA® ) chose its 10th anniversary, and the beginning of Black History Month, as the perfect time to spotlight 10 up-and-coming young African American lawyers. The selected attorneys distinguished themselves in their chosen profession and achieved recognition as America’s best and brightest in the Jan/Feb. issue of the MCCA Diversity & The Bar publication.

Carter M. Stewart is an associate in the Litigation Group focusing his practice on complex litigation matters. He has experience in criminal defense, commercial litigation, arbitration, antitrust, and education law. Stewart has performed internal investigations for Fortune 1000 companies, litigated and mediated cases for Fortune 100 companies, and also has devoted more than 100 hours of his time per year to pro bono work.

As an associate at Bingham McCutchen LLP, Stewart worked as co-counsel with the San Francisco Chapter of the NAACP on San Francisco’s landmark school desegregation case, SFNAACP v. SFUSD. He specifically helped fend off a legal challenge from third-party plaintiffs who wanted to vacate the consent decree obtained in the original litigation. Stewart worked with the NAACP to extend the consent decree for another year and a half in order to ensure that the goals of the original litigation were met.

As an Assistant United States Attorney in the Northern District of California, Stewart helped prosecute the BALCO case which involved the illegal distribution of performance enhancing drugs to Olympic and professional athletes. The case received national exposure and resulted in guilty pleas from all four defendants. Soon after the case was filed, the United States Senate launched an investigation into the use of steroids in professional sports, and Major League Baseball strengthened its drug testing policies.

“This recognition is a wonderful tribute to Carter, as well as to our firm,” said Russell M. Gertmenian managing partner, Vorys, Sater, Seymour and Pease LLP. “The breadth of our client needs are immense, and Carter's accomplishments represent the capabilities and brilliance we seek among our attorneys to serve these clients.
