Merchant & Gould Promotes Kirstin Stoll-DeBell to Partner
Intellectual property law firm Merchant & Gould is pleased to announce that it has promoted Kirstin Stoll-DeBell to partner at the firm.
Kirstin is a patent attorney specializing in patent and trademark litigation. She is experienced in handling a variety of litigation matters covering a broad spectrum of technology areas from semiconductor circuit design and processing, oxygen scavenging polymer compositions, and computer software to casino gaming equipment, Christmas ornaments, and greeting cards, as well as many other industries. Kirstin has also counseled clients on a variety of other intellectual property matters, including trademark selection and usage and trade secret protection. Kirstin recently co-authored an article published in the Fall 2006 edition of the ABA's Litigation magazine entitled "Using Presumptions to Tip the Balance for Injunctive Relief" and is a co-author of the upcoming ABA book on preliminary injunctions and temporary restraining orders.

Menter, Rudin & Trivelpiece, P.C. is pleased to announce that Dawn Simmons Norris, Robert G. ennett and Josephine Yang-Patyi have become Shareholders of the firm as of January 1, 2007.
Ms. Norris is a 1998 graduate of Syracuse University College of Law and earned her Bachelor of Arts Degree from Syracuse University in 1996. Ms. Norris is a member of the Firm's Insolvency and Commercial Litigation Practice Groups. Ms. Norris is a member of the New York State, Onondaga County Bar and Central New York Bankruptcy Bar Associations. She also serves as secretary on the board of directors of the Central New York Bankruptcy Bar Association.

Mr. Bennett is a 1998 graduate of New York Law School and earned his Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1993 from the State University of New York at Stony Brook. Mr. Bennett commenced his career as an associate at a boutique firm in New York City with a concentrated practice in personal injury and medical malpractice litigation. Mr. Bennett is a member of the Firm's Litigation Practice Group and focuses on personal injury and medical malpractice litigation. Mr. Bennett is admitted to practice law in New York and New Jersey, and is a member of the New York State and Onondaga County Bar Associations.

Josephine Yang-Patyi is a 1998 graduate of St. John's University School of Law. Ms. Yang-Patyi received her B.A. Degree in 1992 from the University of Denver and a M.T.S. in 1994 from Harvard University. Ms. Yang-Patyi is admitted to practice law in New York and all federal district courts within the State of New York. Ms. Yang-Patyi is a member of the Firm's Insolvency and Commercial Litigation Practice Groups and a member of American Bankruptcy Institute, New York State Bar Association, Onondaga County Bar Association and Central New York Bankruptcy Bar Association.

Pro Bono Work by Robinson & Cole Trial and Appellate Group Lawyer Highlighted in Pro Bono Partnership
The pro bono work of R&C Trial and Appellate Group lawyer Jeffrey J. White was recently highlighted in a press release distributed by The Pro Bono Partnership. Jeffrey, along with R&C Trial and Appellate Group lawyer Effie Aquila Patrick, advise the Center for Women and Families (Bridgeport, CT), which works with victims of domestic violence and sexual assault on subpoenas, mandated reporting and client confidentiality.

Paul Hastings Acts as Counsel in Launch of New HealthShares Exchange Traded Funds
Paul, Hastings, Janofsky & Walker LLP (Paul Hastings), a leading international law firm, has served as counsel to XShares Advisors and HealthShares , Inc. in the launch of a new family of exchange traded funds (ETFs), known as HealthShares Inc., which will begin trading today on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE).

HealthShares ETFs are organized into therapeutic 'Verticals' and represent specific areas of the healthcare, life science and biotechnology industries. Each Vertical tracks a collection of large, mid and small-cap stocks that addresses a distinct sub-segment of healthcare, such as the diagnosis and treatment of specific therapeutic areas (e.g. cardiology, cancer, infectious disease, etc.) and the development of medical devices (e.g. orthopedic repair, cardio devices, etc.).

The deal was led by partners Michael R. Rosella and Domenick Pugliese and Of Counsel Gary Rawitz.

The new HealthShares family of funds includes twenty separate portfolios, each focusing on a different subsector of the healthcare services, pharmaceuticals, life sciences or biotechnology industry. Five of these portfolios are scheduled to begin trading on the New York Stock Exchange today. These portfolios are:

HealthShares Diagnostics ETF (HHD)

HealthShares Emerging Cancer ETF (HHJ)

HealthShares Enabling Technologies ETF (HHV)

The remaining HealthShares portfolios will commence trading in the near future. Each HealthShares ETF is comprised of 22-25 stocks and tracks an index that is based on a proprietary intellectual model developed by XShares Group LLC, the parent of XShares Advisors LLC, with well defined quantitative parameters. Each Index composition calculation is administered independently by Standard & Poor's (S&P). The specialist for these HealthShares ETFs is Goldman Sachs. Bank of New York is acting as administrator and transfer agent for the HealthShares Exchange Traded Funds.

OMM Represents JER Partners in $1.7B Acquisition of Genesis HealthCare Corporation
O'Melveny represented JER Partners, the private equity investment arm of J.E. Robert Companies, in acquiring Genesis HealthCare Corporation (NASDAQ: GHCI), one of the largest long-term care providers in the U.S., in an all-cash transaction valued at $1.7 billion. JER partnered in the acquisition with Formation Capital, LLC, a leading operator and investor in the senior housing and care industry. The transaction should close in the summer.

Partners Drake Tempest and Paul Scrivano and associates Mick Stanton and Aytan Dahukey led the deal team from the New York office. Partner Bob Rizzi and associate Doug Henry provided tax advice, counsel Bruce Goldberger worked on benefits matters, counsel David Deaton assisted on health care matters, and counsel Rebecca Farrington advised on antitrust matters.

Genesis has more than 200 skilled nursing centers and assisted living residences in 13 eastern states. The company also supplies contract rehabilitation therapy to over 600 health care providers in 20 states and the District of Columbia.

Manila Office Elects New Labor Partner
Quisumbing Torres (QT) recently announced the election of its new Partner, Jonathan C. Flaminiano. This new development in QT strengthens the firm’s capability in the Labor and Employment practice area and is a welcome addition to QT’s roster of Partners.

Flaminiano joined QT as an associate in 1998. His practice focuses on employment advice, executive compensation, benefits, transfers and termination, and labor litigation. Aside from handling labor cases for multinational clients, he also contributes articles about significant Supreme Court decisions on employment law for various Baker & McKenzie publications.

“Jonathan’s election to be one of QT’s Partners is a significant event for the QT family,” remarked Ricardo P. C. Castro, Jr., QT’s Managing Partner. “He will surely drive the firm to reap more successes in the future."

Flaminiano obtained his Juris Doctor degree from the Ateneo de Manila University School of Law in 1997, graduating class valedictorian. He also attended the University of the Philippines where he obtained a Business Administration degree in 1991, graduating cum laude.

Edward M. Ordonez Joins Cozen O'Connor Chicago Office as Member
Edward M. Ordonez recently joined Cozen O’Connor’s Chicago office as a member in the general litigation department. Prior to joining the firm, he was a partner at a Chicago law firm. Ordonez handles all types of litigation matters for large and small clients. He has worked on cases involving premises liability, construction, product liability and public accommodation and discrimination. He has also argued before the Illinois Appellate Court and conducted numerous arbitration hearings and meetings. He has worked on all aspects of discovery and motion practice in state and federal courts and has extensive experience conducting depositions of witnesses, medical professionals and technical experts.

Ordonez earned his undergraduate degree in marketing from the University of Illinois (B.S., 1985) and his law degree from Indiana University School of Law (J.D., 1988). He is admitted to practice in Illinois and before the U.S. District Courts for the Northern and Southern Districts of Illinois. He is also a member of the Federal Trial Bar.
