High court gets Harbor Yard conflict
The state Supreme Court is set to decide a long-standing dispute over cost overruns and corruption during the building of the Arena at Harbor Yard. . . .

Brian Donnell, a Hartford attorney representing the city [of Bridgeport], said there are larger issues at play than disputed payments.

"What's at stake is a city's ability to protect its public contracting process. I think it's significant the Supreme Court took the case.Donnell said.

NASH ELECTED TO THE BOARD OF NORWEGIAN AMERICAN CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
Kermit Nash, a partner in Rider Bennett's Business Department, has been elected to the 2007-2008 board of directors of the Norwegian American Chamber of Commerce - Upper Midwest Chapter.

Kermit practices primarily in the areas of business transactions, mergers and acquisitions, and real estate law. Kermit serves as corporate counsel to a variety of for-profit and non-profit organizations, advising clients on all aspects of business operations and law. Kermit represents clients' interests in various transactions, including acquisitions, sales, license agreements, distribution agreements, mergers and strategic planning. Kermit also represents the U.S. interests of a number of foreign and multi-national corporations.

Kathleen A. Stephenson to Appear on Comcast Newsmakers
Kathleen A. Stephenson, of counsel with Pepper Hamilton LLP, will appear on Comcast Newsmakers, a five-minute interview program that will air on CNN Headline News throughout Southeastern Pennsylvania.

Ms. Stephenson will discuss the “Importance of Having a Will.” The program will air at 25 or 55 minutes after the hour for one week during the month of February or March.

Ms. Stephenson is Chair of the Probate and Trust law Section of the Philadelphia Bar Association. She concentrates her practice in the fields of estate planning and administration and related tax work and is a fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel.

Claude B. Anello is a member in McGlinchey Stafford’s Houston, Texas office, practicing primarily in the areas of commercial real estate, commercial finance and business law.

Anello’s real estate law experience involves advising clients in many aspects of real estate transactions, including analyzing due diligence issues and preparing and negotiating sale, lease and development documentation.

Anello also has considerable experience in complex commercial finance transactions representing both borrowers and national lenders with credit facilities secured by various forms of collateral, including real estate.

In addition, Anello has experience in business law. His past transactions include: asset purchases, compliance matters, and equipment and inventory sales and leases. Anello has also assisted a number of clients with organizational structuring and documentation.

Anello received his J.D. from the University of Houston Law Center and his Bachelor of Science and B.A. from the University of Texas.

Layna S. Cook, a member in McGlinchey Stafford’s Baton Rouge, Louisiana office, practices in the healthcare section. Cook focuses on the representation of managed care organizations and insurance entities in regulatory and litigation matters. She routinely advises clients on state and federal regulations that affect healthcare organizations. She also assists with litigation, particularly with cases that involve healthcare related issues.

Prior to joining the firm, Cook was a law clerk for the Honorable Judge Richard Anderson at the Nineteenth Judicial District Court for the State of Louisiana.

Cook received her J.D. from the Paul M. Hebert Law Center and graduated magna cum laude from Louisiana State University.

George "Dewey" Hembree III, a member in McGlinchey Stafford’s Jackson, Mississippi office, practices in the commercial litigation section of the firm with a concentration on business litigation and consumer finance. He has twenty years of litigation experience and his practice consists primarily of defense of nationwide financial and other lending institutions throughout Mississippi. He also represents clients in general litigation matters, including matters involving real estate, products liability and municipal actions.

Hembree has additional experience in dealing with complex real estate and other business transactions. He represents clients in both commercial and residential real estate ventures. He also assists clients with the formation of corporations and other business entities and aids in obtaining appropriate licenses, permits and other zoning approval.

Hembree received both his J.D. and his B.B.A. from the University of Mississippi.

Dawn M. Rawls is a member in the real estate section of McGlinchey Stafford’s Baton Rouge, Louisiana office and focuses her practice on commercial real estate transactions, trusts, estates and wills and corporate law. Rawls represents national and local clients in the negotiation of retail, office, shopping center and other commercial leases, including equipment leases. She also represents buyers and sellers of commercial real estate transactions.

In her trusts and estates practice, Rawls represents many diverse clients, including those subject to Federal Estate and Gift taxes. She regularly assists clients in the preparation of wills and trusts and in Louisiana succession matters.

Additionally, Rawls advises clients with respect to the formation of limited liability companies and other entities. She has significant experience in general commercial contracts, including multi-million dollar supply, procurement and master service agreements for publicly traded, Fortune 100 companies.Rawls graduated with her J.D. from the Paul M. Hebert Law Center and her B.A. from Louisiana State University.

Dwight W. Scott, Jr., a member in McGlinchey Stafford’s Houston, Texas office, brings a unique blend of experience to the firm’s healthcare section with his more than 15 years of legal and administrative management experience with healthcare organizations. Even though Dwight focuses his practice on healthcare related matters, including medical malpractice, risk management, compliance, peer review and commercial litigation, his involvement is often requested in other areas affecting his healthcare clients. He is also a frequent lecturer on emerging and historical issues affecting the healthcare industry.

Dwight has also served in administrative capacities within the healthcare sector, including serving as the Executive Director of a healthcare program’s eight county region, President of a non-profit healthcare organization and in a position where he was responsible for the claims and litigation activities of a large multifaceted healthcare system in the Texas Medical Center.

Dwight earned his J.D. from South Texas College of Law and his B.S. in Healthcare Administration from the University of Texas.

S. David Smith is a member of McGlinchey Stafford’s Houston, Texas office, focusing on commercial litigation, including banking and consumer financial services. He has extensive experience with complex commercial litigation, including banking cases, receiverships and consumer and commercial financial litigation.

Smith is Board Certified in Consumer and Commercial Law, Texas Board of Legal Specialization and is a past Chairman of the Houston Bar Association Commercial and Consumer Law Section. He is also a frequent presenter on consumer finance issues and an editor of the Texas Consumer and Commercial Law Update.

Smith earned his J.D. from Southern Methodist University Dedman School of Law. He received his B.S.F.S. from Georgetown University.

Paralegals Anderson, Peebles Join McAfee & Taft
Sherry Anderson and Mike Peebles have joined McAfee & Taft, Oklahoma’s largest law firm, to provide paralegal support in the practice areas of aviation law and litigation.

Sherry Anderson serves as a paralegal for the firm’s aircraft financing, registration and title group and has experience working as an administrator for a leading aircraft title insurance company. She brings with her more than 16 years of comprehensive administration support experience working in the real estate, legal and healthcare industries in Oklahoma. Throughout her career, she has served in a variety of roles, including escrow officer, office manager and legal assistant, with the majority of her experience being concentrated in the areas of business administration, customer service, and the handling and documentation of financial transactions.

Mike Peebles provides paralegal support in the areas of mass torts, products liability, oil and gas, insurance, employment, and complex business litigation. Prior to joining McAfee & Taft, he worked extensively in the areas of personal injury, medical malpractice and toxic tort defense, including numerous cases involving claims of asbestos, benzene and silicosis exposure.

The Texas native began his legal career as a paralegal working for Holland & Hart in Denver, CO, before moving to Austin, TX, where he spent seven years working in the Tort Litigation Division of the Office of the Attorney General. He later worked for several civil practice firms in south Texas for another seven years before relocating to Oklahoma.

Peebles holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Baylor University and a legal assistant certificate from the Denver Paralegal Institute in Denver, CO.

Sonnenschein To Open Office In Silicon Valley
Sonnenschein Nath & Rosenthal LLP announced today that it will open an office in the Silicon Valley in mid-March as part of the law firm’s expansion in the technology sector. Partners in the new office, to be located in Menlo Park, Calif., will include Yar R. Chaikovsky, who has joined Sonnenschein’s national Patent Litigation Group from the Silicon Valley office of Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP, and William W. Choe and Tarek N. Fahmi, Sonnenschein attorneys with extensive Silicon Valley experience who currently reside in the firm’s San Francisco office.
